Most people don't realize just how hard it is to play Joplin's rags cleanly at fast tempos, this is actually incredibly impressive
I'm not even a pianist and I'm simply blown away!
What did Eubie Blake say in the "School of Ragtime" although I think Joplin said it first, "Never, never play ragtime fast" it sounds just as good slow. Cory Hall who plays lots of Joplin plays everything as a nice even pace and he's pretty good...
Most people can't comprehend what a complex form of music "rag" is, It's a function of time. THIS was the "SIMPLER TIMES" , So: "How hard can it BE?!?!". Well- We see "primitive" Model "T" Fords from the same era, and "think" it's SIMPLE, But 86.75309% of drivers THEN or NOW know what makes it all work. In fact MOST mechanics have a hard time dealing with a "simple" Model T (as it, mechanically DEVIATES from most cars of the 1920s-1950s) . Rag and Jazz are like that!
Thats cardio done for today
😂😂yasss
Tomorrow too!
I've been playing piano for 5 years, and i've been playing Scott Joplin's rags since two years ago. I thought i wasn't really bad. And then i saw you playing.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
She's been playing for 18 years though. :)
That's it, young lady! It's decaf for you from now on, before you start playing!! ;) Great job! Joplin is smiling!!
Scott Joplin in heaven is like “SLOW DOWN!”
No, it is in 2/4 time at ~120pbm which is very fast. By not fast, he means don't play it at 150bpm like some players in the day.

Chance, LOL! Priceless comment!
You're better at playing that piano than I am at breathing.
Exactly, sometimes I forget to breath and then am confused why I'm getting lightheaded until I realize and try to remember to breath.
Crap now I’m manually breathing
Matthew Schad IM NOT ALONE! HAH
COPD?

Now play it backwards.
you doing too much. lol
but it's possible
+Alex Lynch Hahaha now that I don't know is possible 😜
+Kristen Mosca funny how you get 400 views and 28 likes in 43 minutes
Lol try to learn how to play it in 3/4 time😂😂
I’ve heard ragtime shouldn’t be played fast especially this piece but I reckon it sounds brilliant played at this tempo
It's just for you to laugh at!
Anyone can play any speed
Oh my god the way your left hand moves around is just insane
You know she's left handed, right?
Christina Kim still. The jumps are pretty big.
Welcome to ragtime Sir
Cziffra's arrangement of Strauss's Tritsch Tratsch polka has jumps 3 times as large, at a higher tempo, but this is a J
How about valentina lisitsa rachmaninof little red ridding hood
Kristen, I'm obsessed with your piano playing! I'm in my 50s and so admire people like you who can do this! I could listen to this all day. lol I even got my husband to get me a piano for Christmas last year. I've played off and on (self teaching myself during 2020 covid-times via youtube videos)
Q: How long have you been playing piano?
Q: What are your future (or current?) plans to do with this wonderful gift/talent of piano playing?
I love the variation you put on it! That's so creative!
I don't personally like it this tempo but you're still amazing at it!
so you want faster tempo? lol.
+Law Dizzy no I want it like way slower lol
@@PianoDiva24 This is how it should be played. Check Tom Brier, best rag player ever. Although Joplin didn't recommend this speed, he was wrong.
@@PreservationEnthusiast Bud, that's called an opinion.
Put on 0.75x, but its so cringe
Wow,great stuff playing that fast.I love watching the left hand leaping about in the stride playing technique.I am 83 and am teaching myself to play piano by ear,,,stride is not easy!!!
Super exciting! Love the variation around 1:04. Awesome playing!
I've come back to this video over and over again, and I actually play it at 0.75 speed so I can get a sense of what speed I want to learn to eventually play it. This is an incredibly well done reference for a guy who plays with lead sheets and chord sheets and uses ear training to play music. Maple Leaf Rag as well as Toccata and Fugue in D Minor are two pieces I CANNOT learn by just using ear, but primarily have to use charts to learn it.
I also have my right pinky permanently bent forward at a 90 degree angle so those octaves serve a challenge for my personal biology, so figuring out when and how long to stretch for a 1-5 finger octave and when I biologically cannot do it, or use my 1-4 finger technique which can be tougher to consistently hit octaves with, but at least I can reach it!
Thanks for leaving this up, Ms. Mosca. I continue to enjoy all of your work you've posted on UA-cam.
My all-time favorite rag!! I can never hear it enough, even if they keep playing it faster and faster...
Kristen do you agree that the 3rd Part (1:15) is the hardest to play in this great tempo? I think it is :D
+keeprunnin Yes absolutely!
I also love playing the Maple Leaf Rag insanely fast, but at this point I always have to slow down :(
I'm just learning the piece and the third part is cracking me up everytime...
keeprunnin
The 3rd part is fucking hard. i play Maple Leaf a half year now and its finger-breaking😂 ...all parts are working well... but the 3rd is still the hardest
keeprunnin screw that trio
Boy, I very much enjoyed your piano playing! You're great. You made me very happy. Keep playing!
Love this. Ragtime is such happy music and you do it beautifully.
I love the slightly ahead timing on the run at 0:56. Great style. Such a subtle thing, but makes all the difference. Bravo.
I love these little extra notes and octave jumps you have going on in this piece. In particular I really like what you have going on with that repeat of the first theme after the second one (1:00 if I'm describing that poorly). Very attention-grabbing and exciting to listen to.
You have very accurate technique!! Very amazing!! I've subscribed! :)
Turned the speed to x2 and my computer overheated
If I could like this comment more than once I would
I was going to say that playing it at double speed opened a warp in the space-time continuum.
I forgot how beautifully you play the rag. It really southes my soul. Never stop making these times 😊 HAPPY!!!
I could listen to you play the piano all day. WONDERFUL!!
Okay, since its the fourth time you post this AWESOME song, i'm going to flippin learn it myself this time! Looking forward to smashing my head through the keys.... Good work though, you really got me into ragtime with your fantastic music! :)
Bravo!!! What a beautiful interpretation, thank you so much for sharing your music I can't imagine how hard you have been practicing for this performance ❤️ ❤🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you for this.
Sorry to be so offtopic but does someone know a way to log back into an Instagram account??
I was dumb lost my login password. I love any help you can offer me!
@Nova Robert instablaster ;)
@Steven Alexzander i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im in the hacking process now.
Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Steven Alexzander It worked and I finally got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thank you so much you saved my account :D
@Nova Robert Glad I could help =)
Kristen, I recently finished Maple Leaf after working on it for too many months. At the beginning I really thought I wouldn't be able to do it, especially with having tiny hands. Watching your videos made ragtime my favorite genre and really encouraged me to keep plugging away till perfection. Thanks for that.
The video ends before the wisps of smoke emanate from the body of the piano; the tattered felts dangling from the hammers. Brava, young lady.
i love it! Awesome once again and I love all the little added extras you did !
I still like the first Disney Maple Leaf, unadorned, with the relaxed pacing that better displays all the fine complexity of this piece.
Outstanding, kiddo! Even though you're rushing the tempo of this piece, you're still in time. You don't miss a beat at all. Bravo!
Is that third section as difficult as everyone says?
+PeopleCanFly23 YES!
yes. but the last section the song changes so it gets tricky. the "C" section changes key also. and it has the longest part, especially the ninth through 12th measures in that section.
the form is" AABBA(keychange down)CC(back to A flat) DD"
so AABBA:CC:DD
Im trying to learn it now, and... Yes, it is so hard!
CopperCookie hello coppercookie
Wow... just perfectly played! Maple Leaf Rag is one of my favourite pieces to play on piano and I really like to impress people with the jumping left hand!😂
I loved rag as a small child, now I'm a slightly older child and you revived my interest in rag! Now I'm playing Maple Leaf Rag! Thank you so much!!!
Always nice to hear when musicians start creating their own style/interpretation.
If my ears don't deceive me, I can hear some "Jo Ann Castle" -influences ;)
Thanks for sharing.
Keep it up!
Fantastic! The best fast rendition of this classic since Max Morath's 1970s recording of it. Keep it up!
Brilliant job!!! Thanks so much for posting!
Neither thirteen pots of coffee, or lessons could get me to this stage.
Love this! At 32 I'm starting out at learning piano, something I've been meaning to do for a long time and this is the song I aspire to playing. Hope I can play to the level you play at
Hi Kristen - I'm learning to play the piano and you're quite the inspiration. Thanks for putting smiles on people's faces. :) Take care (oh, and I love Disney too)
I've literally been playing this piece so much lately, I know it inside out and can tell every minor mistake and detail.
I have never been 1 comment, but I have watched you for a while & I think you have an awesome talent & you are blessed!! And you're dogs are funny!!! Thank you for the joy you give to so many!!! God bless you luv!!!!
Like this much!! I am a non-piano player who decided to skip everything and jump directly into "The Entertainer" and "Maple Leaf Rag". Now working on the third section of "Maple Leaf Rag". It keeps me sane.
You are my new favorite UA-cam artist! I was beginning to think that no one recorded more than one ragtime piece until I found your videos. Keep up the good work!!
This is absolutely rippin'. Love it!
E key and it hurts. You’re an incredible pianist, and whilst I can play this like you can (albeit with less accuracy of course) your sheer skill is inspiring me to learn the rest of Joplin’s rags because let’s face it, I’ve never heard anyone play them as well as you have! Amazing job!
Thanks, for playing my favorite rag.
That’s how you play if your train is just about to depart, but you want to play something before you leave... :D
This is what happens when Scott Joplin's instructions at the top of the score gets cut off by the copy machine. 😎
(Anyone who plays Joplin will know what I'm talking about.) 😋
Yee youre right!

Wow! I'll bet this young Lady has a Good Handshake.
Can you play it faster?
If you put a vid of this up every day I'd still watch.
same here
I still love hearing this song.. and you do it great.
So wonderful old fashioned music played beautiful 👍 thanks
Such a fantastic rendition, incredible. Bravo!!!
Kristen, are you Italian? You must be... Your talent really shines! Your performances inspired me so much that I'm doing the stride like I never thought could. Thanks a million!
+Pete Totaro You're too kind! I'm glad I could help! And I'm half Italian. ☺️
+Kristen Mosca Thank you Kristen, as your info indicates as, I'm also half Italian - on my dad's side as you are. I recognized th brilliant talent as soon as I have seen your first video! We'll be watching all of your video,s and will be at the top of my repertoire of listening music? Thank yo a million Kristn!
Unbelievable!
Master Young Lady.
I love the timbre of the piano.
Kristen, your present and future are brilliant! I am sure your past too but it already past.
God Bless You!
A rather blistering pace, and an inventive conclusion. Fun!
I really like the little "improvisation" that you did between 2nd and 3rd sections. Trying to understand what you did there is little hard given the rather fast tempo though ;) Great performance, thanks for posting!
Just watched this and glad I did - the bits where you go to a higher octave are lovely, something I'm going to try! Ever thought about learning the riffs from the piano duel in the Scott Joplin movie?
0:53-0:57 I can't figure out how you do that, its so unique and cool
no doubt my favorite ragtime piece and u do great at it. 👍😉like the speed too
I'm nearly done with learning this song and it's given me tendonitis in my right elbow, and I play ituch slower. Excellent work, and no mistakes, just wow!
Wow!! Tristan, you are amazing!! Listening to you play that piece made my day and week!! What an inspiration you are, and a living testimony to the existence, power, and Glory of God!!

Darn autocorrect! Kristen!!!!
This is actually used for the train chase scene in the Let's Go Alberto episode, "Whistle-Stop Vicky"
Turbo rag!! I love it
3 times I read 'showier' as 'slower' in your posting above - I thought you were pulling our legs :)
Amazing performance of a tune that took me weeks to master the Introduction of - I never made it to the end. [That was 40 years ago]
Maple Leaf Rag Express.:)
12 years old and having to play this for exams....hated it ever since lol
Very nice! You make it look so easy. "The Trio" totally kicked my ass...
Holy cow! I have to listen to that at .75 speed to even comprehend the piece. You are gifted.
Very good... cool variations added and challenging tempo.
Wow this inspired me to get my Stefan Grossman book out again... thanks so much!
Loved the ending!!
I like the good old times and the golden days better
I definitely admire your talent, Kristen! We inheirited an upright baby grand piano and I always hoped our daughter would want to learn to play it, but no such luck. I don't believe in forcing a child to learn an instrument as then it is a chore instead of pleasure, so it's just sitting around collecting dust. Heck, it hasn't even been tuned in all the time we've owned it. A man who's occupation it is to tune pianos said it can be tuned, but why should we do so when it isn't being played? Such a waste...
Yikes! That was fast! I generally like this rag played more slowly; but, yikes that was good!
I'm sorry I was looking at the piano wrong it is the F-sharp 2 octaves below middle C...
+Andrew Ratajczak It's not an F#! 😇
+Kristen Mosca Dang it! 😂
Is it before or after the trio that it's more noticeable?

Wow! I'd love to live next door to you jut to hear you play! Great as always!
+Just Another RV Channel Pretty sure my neighbors hate me for playing in the middle of the night. Haha
As Scott Joplin would write on the sheet music of his rags...Not too fast”
Wow that's insane!!
Impressionnants les déplacements de la main gauche!
Kristen, You're as fast as a moska (fly) and supremely talented. Thank you for playing my favorite music.
!
Scott Joplin stated “ that it’s not right to play ragtime fast”
Very nice mixing something of your own. That's displaying mastery over the piece. You gotta play The Entertainer.
Greatest piano player ever!
...yes........I can definitely count 6 fingers on each hand....!
Ridiculously good! I'm knackered just watching :)
Absolutely incredible 👍
Stunning! Watching this performance made my night.
its quite amusing people are complaining about the third part. I learnt it very very quickly. its rather the fourth part (ending section) which is cracking my brain
bok interesting
I tried to play Chopin's Raindrop Prelude on a piano that's Ab key below middle C didn't come back up after hitting it once. Wasn't very enjoyable honestly.
She's a great piano player!!
Sounds beautiful the way you play, you got some real talent, keep up the good work
