Ramshej Fort, located near Nashik in Maharashtra, India, is a historically significant hill fort, best known for its resistance during the Maratha-Mughal wars. The fort is situated at around 3,000 feet above sea level and offers a panoramic view of the surrounding Sahyadri range. According to legend, the fort’s name means “the place where Lord Rama slept,” linking it to stories from the Ramayana.

Ramshej Fort gained fame for its role during the late 17th century when it became a point of contention between the Marathas and the Mughals. After the death of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Aurangzeb sent his armies to capture it, but the fort’s defenders, led by Maratha warriors, managed to resist the Mughal forces for over six years. This fortification reflects the Maratha dedication and expertise in guerrilla warfare, making it one of the lesser-known but proud symbols of Maratha resilience.
Architecture and Layout
The fort is relatively compact, featuring fortified walls, bastions, and several structures for defense, including water reservoirs carved into the rock. Although not very large, the fort's architecture exemplifies strategic planning, making excellent use of the rugged natural terrain for defense. Key spots include the temple dedicated to Lord Rama, caves, and small water tanks, which are believed to be the primary water sources for the residents of the fort.
Trekking and Accessibility
Ramshej Fort is popular among trekkers due to its moderate trekking difficulty, scenic views, and historical charm. The base village, Ashewadi, is where most trekkers start their ascent. The trek takes around an hour and passes through scenic landscapes, offering a moderate level of challenge suited for both beginners and seasoned trekkers.
