  • I had to the unbelievable pleasure to edit and produce this short piece that features the iconic voice of Lou Reed as he gives his thoughts of life and Tai Chi. The entire video premiered at the Lincoln Center in New York this past weekend as a part of a celebration of Lou Reed's life and art. Thanks to Scott Richman and everyone else involved.

Lou was SO deep. Also, it was very obvious that Tai chi changed Lou and made him into a better man. I hope he is at peace, now.

Lou was chimerical. We all know what it feels like to feel like an open star. Never fully ready to fit in. He was open to infinity which is why his output is so helplessly out of the box. And he gave Henry Flynt guitar lessons.

I met Lou Reed briefly and thanked him for his music. I reached my hand out to shake his. He looked down at my hand and squeezed it as if almost to break it. I have very strong, big hands and I believe it bothered him that I didn’t wince. It was a very strong shake but he grunted and walked away.

I'll never forget the day I went on ITunes and has the notice REMEMBERING LOU REED. My jaw dropped and hoped that it was a mistake, but jumping over to Wikipedia confirmed the news. I'm currently finishing a biography on Lou and it tells of a man who driven by some extreme contradictions, going from Lou the a-hole, especially when the Velvet Underground reunited and he demanded absolute control, to the sweet and kind Lou who was very caring when one of his VU bandmates was on his deathbed. He seems to have found a great deal of peace when he met Laurie Anderson. I was late in discovering him. I believe his New York album was the first I'd ever bought. But as much I loved it it was Magic and Loss that I still consider my favourite. Despite its grim subject matter Lou wrote these songs in such a way that they become almost like short stories. The song Dreaming never fails to make tear up. The images he paints in your mind are so vivid even though you've never met any of these people. It was part of genius of crafting a song with simple but unforgettable lyrics. In Songs For Drella the song I Believe tackles the shooting of Andy Warhol by Valerie Solanas and puts us right there and then share Lou's desire for retribution. It was a great loss when he passed. He followed no trends or bowed to record executives who pressured him to make more accessible albums. It's depressing that everything comes down to money and profits, but such is the nature of the beast.

Rather amazing that he and John Cale took up discipline after years of being rather undisciplined. Cale became interested in Zen Buddhism and we can see what Lou is doing here. It's all yin and yang strangely enough

Mr Reed studied Wu style first of all, then he went on to study Chen style.
