  • Authorities say a suspect eluded pursuing officers after allegedly driving recklessly and ramming an officer's patrol vehicle on August 15. The Middleton Police Department in Ohio said the pursuit began when an officer witnessed the suspect allegedly firing shots out of his car window. According to police, the driver of the vehicle was identified as 26-year-old Mahliak Davis. Police say they have a warrant for Davis' arrest for multiple felony charges.

I used to teach/train courses in high speed driving for law enforcement & other government protection agencies.That pursuing officer was literally out driven by the criminal. I understand that the official has to be more cognizant of the public's safety. There were plenty opportunities to box him in and/or pit him safely. Unfortunately, most likely in this case, department policies probably limited what the pursuing officer could do. Pathetic that a beat up old Pontiac can stay ahead of a police vehicle.

      In Michigan they try their best to limit high speed pursuits. If it's a traffic violation or other non violent offense they'll generally let them go if it gets to be too risky. There are exceptions, of course, if it's a wanted murderer, a probable drunk driver, medical condition, etc. We've had too many instances of innocent people getting hurt of even killed by people running from a shoplifting charge.
      Also Sheriffs officers and MSP officers in unmarked cars cannot initiate chases. They can monitor traffic but must call ahead to a marked unit. MSP units are among the most unique in the country. Almost all are dark blue with one main emblem, and one heritage emblem. They also have that big red light on top. No MSP units have bars. Aside from the big red light they also have blue and red lights all around the units. A
      Inside at the top of the windshield and rear window. Inside the side windows in the head lights or pushbar or both and tail lights. The big red “gumball” is now LED, so can be seen from a distance even in snow since I’m pretty sure is a low frequency light.
      Of course they’ve also got that transparent plastic “Stop” sign that runs along the front hood and can be seen by cars as they pull them over. They light up so you know that you’re the one that’s getting pulled over.

    OMG. Another PD scared to PIT/damage vehicles/pursue in favor of letting someone who's already fired shots and continue to put the public at risk just head on up the road. Officers had SEVERAL opportunities to block him in or push him off the road at about 1 MPH without resorting to a high speed PIT. Each time though, zero contact with the other vehicle was made and an avenue of escape was allowed in favor of not damaging police vehicles. Yeah, will probably eventually get him but will it stick? Can they positively put him behind the wheel? How many others did they put at risk by allowing him to continue driving? At least their patrol cars don't have any dents unlike all those civilians dude whacked along the way. Shameful department policy. dont you just love when police go to block someone in but they leave exactly enough room for the car to just drive through and get away? it happens too often for it not to be on purpose

    Some departments won't allow officers PIT or intentionally use police vehicles as battering rams. The units are not replaceable in their budgets. Many departments have suffered budget cuts from their government.

      but police budgets have increased every year, and expenditures per capita stayed at same level for decades. most of it goes into welfare and health bs and the 100k+ wages. how else are they going to make money if they dont effectively enforce the law and collect fines?

    • @BRAVO-cz8sw
      @BRAVO-cz8sw 2 роки тому

      @@MrPaxio Sure. But many departments are yet to receive anything substantial enough to bring them back to precut assets.
      And the only thing that prompted reconsideration in cuts was skyrocketing crime rates. And there are many departments that have adhered to operation levels of the past one and a half to two years because it just became SOP and it never changed.

    The mayor needs to immediately cease and desist high speed chases by all cops (especially these inept ones). They are terrifyingly dangerous to the innocent public.

      We should just let people willing to use their vehicles like this freely go instead. We'll get basic information about the vehicle that's clearly not theirs and respond in 3-5 business days long after they've dumped it

      Where I live cops are not supposed to pursue a suspect trying to flee in a vehicle if they are in a residential neighborhood. They still do it anyway, though.

      @@GangsterInternet have you seen the grappler device? How often are these pursuits ending in gun battles? These cops can't handle a car, gun or tazer... I don't trust them with pepper spray. They're unconstitutional also. There are better ways to function as law enforcement than this. You'd be screaming if your child was struck by a cop car or bullet. Maybe not though... maybe you are a cop.
