  • There you go. Here’s a gem, one of my favourite moments in one of the most successful BBC series (2001 - 2002) in the UK. The first two dances of "Saturday Night Fever" are excellent, but the last one gifted by David Brent (whose role is the typical boss with inferiority complex, jealous and who thinks is funny) is f*cking brilliant...

    Brent's facial expressions are what makes the whole series. Absolutely magnificent, and as someone whos spent many years working in UK offices, every bit of this rings true. The US one is ok, but the UK, original series is sheer perfection.

    Though Brent is a buffoon, he’s loads more endearing than smug Neil. You just want to smack him, especially here...you can just picture him practicing his Travolta moves to perfection, to impress the staff. In a way, he’s as keen to impress as Brent. The only difference is Neil makes it look easy, compared to poor David.

    • @HovisSteve
      @HovisSteve 3 роки тому +5

      Agreed. David's character has the benefit of being a work of fiction whereas people like Neil are all too real, and in my experiences there's something 'off' about them.

    • @ReddoFreddo
      @ReddoFreddo 2 роки тому +3

      I think Neil reveals he can be quite petty in that he clearly despises David and enjoys being better than him, not at first, but after he gets to know him and especially after David is fired and he keeps showing up without notice, he really liked rubbing in the "Will your lady friend be there?" and when she turned out to look very attractive and she and David seemed to have a good time together, Neil seemed disappointed. So with that in mind, I don't disagree with your assessment that Neil is also an egomaniac, just a much more successful one at that.
      However, it's also possible he's just really in to dancing, stand up comedy and cake baking, and these are all just spontaneous acts of self expression.

I also like where David (post losing his job) comes in to visit with his dog, guaranteeing female attention.

Lester Wilson who did The Couples Choreography for Saturday Night Fever also was the Choreographer for the "Original" Production of The Wiz in 1978. Two of his Dancers were in Saturday Night Fever named Shirley & Chester. Also, The Tavares other hit Record "It Only Takes A Minute" was the debut single of Take That. They like Boyz To Men, were also from Philadelphia, and Boyz To Men's Songs are now some of the most popular Audition Songs on UK Talent Shows as well as Smokey Robinson's "Who's Loving You"

      Here's another fun fact. In The "Live" Production of The Wiz for this Generation Fatima Robinson did the Choreography and she worked with Cheryl Ann Tweedy on her Solo Concert. Cheryl guest starred on Coronation Street and now Stirling Gallacher is on Coronation Street. In North America Kids who were born in the 1990's are discovering The Bee Gees and they think they are next to KC & The Sunshine Band the Funkiest White Boys in The Music Business

    Disco Inferno has never sounded (or looked) better.
    The really great thing about The Office is the level of detail which goes into every character, you can look past all the main characters in this scene and easily identify everyone’s thoughts and feelings without words. There is amazement, incredulity, jealously, admiration, happiness, sadness, worry and love. To name a few, all from characters with no important lines. Superb.

    The subleties in this are brilliant. You can see how Brent tries to mimick all the elements he liked from Neil's performance, the energy, the interaction with the audience (when he points at them), the seemingly complicated moves, and at the same time he tries to make it more rough and "manly" bcause he found neils dance "gay". All of this just goes to show how he is always trying too much to be better than neil

      I was wondering that. Ricky said in an interview that he pretty much improvised the dance and couldn't remember exactly what he'd done once he'd finished. He also said the reason the camera cuts away from him to other people's faces was because he was getting worn out. So maybe he stopped and re-started a couple of times but it was still done in one (longer) take that was edited down.
