it was sounding great before editing! of course editing goes along with the genre of music you play and how it blends with the rest of the instruments, but hell yea it captured the raw drums perfectly !
I got the L20 and am a drummer as well. I have a room mic that really makes a difference. I found your channel by searching for "how to" vids on the L20. You sound great!

Thank you! Unfortunately I don't have any more experience with devices like this. This is a great option if you want to use it for live situations but if you gonna be in a studio I would always prefer a computer and external audio interface
Bravo. The drumming is fantastic, and your drums sound very good too. Yea, some start to criticise, but one has to remember, you can take this one recording and mix it different ways which will give you different results. As a demo video it shows what you can do with the L12. I can't wait to buy one, thank you for posting this!! love it.
Thank you for the very kind words! And also thank you for understanding. When I made this video I had almost no idea how to mix drums so i understand why people point it out. If you have some skills when it comes to mixing/record drums, the Zoom LiveTrak can bring great results! It's a great machine for the price. Thanks for watching!
@@SimonAspsund I am just starting to experiment with recording drums at home. If you could only buy one device to get started, which one...Focusrite 18i20 or Zoom.L-12?
@@CARLOSDIGGS I kept my Focusrite and I would choose Focusrite 18i20 every day! If you want to record without a computer then the Zoom is a great option. Otherwise, the Focusrite is the way to go.
Very nice drumming and sounding too.. I'm pretty new to drum recording and needs to do few purchases soon.. Is there possibility to have a midi recording with this zoom? thank you.
Depends on what kind of sound your going for I guess , this sounds closed and boxed in, I like my drums to sound big and open , I don't know why these days I see everyone mic every single drum, one on the kick and snare , two overheads and 2 or 3 strategically placed in a room away from the drums will give you a much better drum sound , unless you want that tight boxy dead sound.
I think it also depends pretty much on the room and if you use a room mic. Like in this video, I don't use any room mic at all. I only used the mics that I mentioned because those were the only mics I had at that time. Thanks for your feedback
SimonAspsundDrums it's not a bad sound by any means , if you got put one or two large diaphragm mics about 15-20 feet back and high as you can get if the room allows for it , it will open them drums up big time, great drumming tho.. 👍🏼
Oh thanks didn't know about that! But I agree, the sound is very "compact" in this video. I didn't mean to sound salty. And of course I want a more natural sound, but I sit right against the wall so there is no space at all, unfortunately. I've started to use a cheap room mic and it helps a bit but there's not much to do in this little room, haha!
Yeah. No. More mics will not make it sound tight and boxy. More mics equal more options. The mix decides how it sound. I am not a fan of this mix but I also think this digital board has decent cheap pres but terrible eq and terrible effects. There's not a lot of mixing able to be done on that board... You can always turn mics down but you can't add more.
Koolteeth1 I only had this device for a couple of days to try out the sound it produces. So I can't answer that but if I remember correctly you should be able to listen to one track at the same time you're recording the other tracks. But ask Zoom about this question!
This is a nicely done video both recording and performance-wise. Thanks for posting. I have been considering purchasing the L12 to record live tracking of my student band as they play live together as we have limited resources and this mixer seems fit some of those needs including running each instrument feed separately through usb to DAW thnx again.
I don't have much more experience about the L12 than in this video but yes, I guess it's really good for recording live performances! Sound quality is also great. Thanks for your kind words
I like the raw drums too, sounded very natural and full. The edited bass drum sounded very clicky, the snare was kind of super constrained and the toms a bit boomy. I'd recommend always AB'ing with what you had while editing, so you don't lose yourself in the neverending edit sessions. We've all done that. :) Awesome drumming by the way!!!
Thanks for the feedback! I will totally think of this the next time I edit my drums. I agree that the mixed sound in this video is unnatural. Thank you!
Yes it sounds good. I've compared this Zoom to the Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 2nd Gen and it's almost exactly similar in sound quality, both recorded in 44.1khz and 24-bit. I have now uploaded a sound test video of the Scarlett today. I've mixed the sound different though so you can only compare the part with raw audio of these two. If you're interested. Anyways, thanks!
I actually went with Scarlett and DAW. The sound is better on the Scarlett. But there's not a huge difference. But if you don't want to use DAW the Zoom is great!
As we practice in a cramped space with 100w amps I'd love to know if it is possible to record all tracks but send to the PA (through the master out) just the vocals, that would make it the perfect solution for us.
you just have to send the vocal channels only over to the monitor outs, that way you record everything to the main mix but only singing is heard in your PA or monitor cubes
Focusrite is better I think. But if you gonna use this device as it's made for, live situations and stuff like that and as an independent audio recorder, it's really good!
I don’t think the editing is bad. It does really depend on the genre of music you’re going for. I do personally prefer a more unedited natural sound but it sounds like you’re going for a more metal sound. I would think of a way of matching the Toms to the snare and kick a little better though. Either a tiny tiny bit of reverb on the snare and kick or muffle up the toms a little or a filter. Cheers.
Hi, first of all nice drumming! I've got a question. Is possibile to record first and after export all tracks separated? I was thinking that i could record 8 channels with my audio interface and other 8 tracks with this.Let me know about this please :-)
Hi, thanks! Yes, that is possible. You record into an SD card and you'll find every single track there when you plug the SD card into your computer. The tracks are saved on the SD card automatically. But if the case is that you just want to be able to record 16 mics, I would rather recommend maybe buying a second audio interface that you also plug into your computer. So you use two at the same time. There can be some complication problems if you're unlucky though. But if you want to retake something when you're playing and use both an USB audio interface and the Zoom Livetrak, it will be a pain in the ass since you need to do double the work all the time.
Thank you very much! I used a gate, EQ, a compressor that bring some punch to the snare and a little reverb. I don't really know what I'm doing when I mix drums though.
Nice video and nice playing ;) And just FYI editing is not about using EQ and compression - that's mixing - editing is about editing the performance, correcting time, removing noises, etc. Just so you know :)
