- On St. Patrick's Day 2023 I took my first ride on the #5 Sky Top Explorer Super Dome car. This is the third (and for now final) Reading & Northern dome car to be refurbished and put into service.
This was the last of ten Super Domes built by Pullman in 1952 for the Milwaukee Road. It ran on the Hiawatha as car #59. It was later owned by Amtrak, and it is believed that's where it got it corrugated siding.

Imagine the R&N does locomotive cab rides and caboose charters to the public!
You can ride in both most of the year on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway! The only time they don't offer cab rides is when they run the F units, and the caboose is unavailable all winter.
Way back in 1973, i took Amtrak from Springfield Illinois to Havre Montana. Part of that trip was in the former Great Northern full length dome, and it was cool watching the "Mars Light" on the "E" unit gyrating through the night, and the signals changing as the engines passed each block signal.
Cool memories! The Great Northern domes are nearly identical the Santa Fe domes from what I understand.
@@JamieMakin the GN full length domes (Great Domes as they were called), were kind of a cross of the Santa Fe and Milwaukee domes, they had large windows like the ATSF, but were smooth sided like Milwaukee, plus, they ran 4 regular length domes in the premier train, "The Empire Builder" as well, with the "Great Dome" being reserved for Pullman passengers only, as it was placed behind the dining car until after Amtrak was formed, then the Great Dome was put in front of the diner, and coach passengers were then allowed access to it. That was my first, last, and only time in a full length dome, and yes!, that was a great memory!

@@JamieMakin but it's almost nothing. Watching the commercials is how you might make a few pennies. Just using premium which I use for all my non-monetized friends would pay a fraction of a. Cent.
