During the early 90s, I spent three years at a high volume dealership that sold Honda and Isuzu. We probably sold a thousand Iszuzs during the time I was there, I never saw a 2-door Trooper in that body style come through our shop. It truly is the unicorn.
@@scdevon I think the 2 doors are convenient for everyday use. I own a trooper 89 with 2 doors and sometimes my friends huzzle to get inside and out . What is your opinion about it
I have a 98 rodeo that just past 240,000 miles on it a few days ago and never had a engine/transmission problem. besides a few small repairs like brakes, oil change ect. its been a strong and reliable everyday driver.
I couldn't help you sense mine is a automatic.... but i can tell you from my personal experience. The way the gear placement is when it changes on these are a bit weird personally compare to other suv i been in. a lot of the power really comes in at first and second but after third and fourth, man it becomes a slow crawl trying to gain anymore speed ESPECIALLY going up a hill. It will eventually get to 70 but in it's own time. these suv are very slow and heavy. they feel more comfortable driving in low revs and it loves to stay in third once you reach legal speed. it will get to fourth but it's gonna take some time. I don't know how that translate to manual sense you have more control but just keep that in mine if you plan on getting one. other then that though, it's got some good torque to make up for it's speed. i got stuck in wet mud that covered half my front/back tires and i got it out with a few trys going back and fourth. If you got any more questions, feel free to ask. i hope this helps
ok guys here's what I know. I have 98 Acura slx. trooper in disguise. they use the gm 4l60e trans as does BMW. they are very problematic. 170 on mine no issues yet!
The 4 door 1st gen rodeo is my second favorite car as I grew up with a rebadged Honda Passport that is older than me and it is still running fine today.
I have a white RS model that may actually be the car from the review. There's so few of them that were ever imported and it came from the same area the show is filmed.
LHStudios1 i didnt even know they existed and ive been a car guy since i was a kid. They must be ultra rare, maybe only a few hundred in existance or less.
The 2-door Trooper (RS) was only available in 1993 and 1994. One reason cited for low 2-door sales was because of a higher price due to U.S. customs tariff on 2-door trucks ("chicken tax"). Looking at NADA, the '93-94 2-doors are worth more now than 4-doors (and even the '96-99 SLX!). 2-doors were shorter by 17 inches and were smaller inside (less cargo volume and rear seat room).
No wonder I’ve never seen one in person! I was thinking back to the early 2000’s when there were still a ton of Troopers on the road and I just couldn’t picture one of these.
Doobie1975 me either. Came here to say the same thing. They must have been a single model year or sold in very low numbers, like the old two door Nissan Pathfinders from the first couple model years in the 80s.
Neither did any buyers on the showroom floors. Isuzu folded in America years later. You have to SELL big numbers if you want to stay in business. The marketing people at companies like Isuzu, Mitsubishi, and Mazda (now seeking bailout money) need a swift kick in the butt or maybe their vehicles really just aren't that good.
Even though I like the old 80s models, but still the modern trooper is a good truck with boxy looks with retained off-road capabilities and also the rodeo
We still have the VHS that Isuzu mailed us after the roll-over experienced by the Consumer's Union during testing...our '94 Trooper wasn't perfect, but it also had a pretty tough life. They were good SUV's.
yo tengo una trooper 1993 es una fiera en todo terreno actualmente tengo un jeep pero mi isuzu trooper no la cambio por nada quien las a probado sabe que son unos verdaderos 4*4 muy buenos. saludos
Isuzu dropped the ball big time. Had they stayed in the north American SUV market they would've owned the SUV segments. The local Isuzu dealership in my area sells commercial trucks and commercial truck parts only. I guess they know where their profits are.
I would like a 2 door first gen trooper. I have an 01 trooper and its great, asside from the driver window in which the clips that attach to the window regulator keep on breaking off from the window. But i love space, i wish it had more power though. Nothing a that a GM truck engine cant solve
that would work. Isuzu and GM are partners overseas.. there, the Rodeo is a GM branded product. A 3.2 250hp Honda V6 from the 2004 Rodeo or 2004-2006 Vue will fit in your trooper perfectly too :)
+9890jsp if i ever do anything, it will most likely be a 4.8 out of a yukon. That engine has already proved to me how great it is. Give it a proper tune and it will get 415+ without forced induction
I still see Rodeo's on the road in 2018. Although this video reminds me how nice looking those beat up old hoopties I see today were when they were new. But there are still lots of them going strong. My Ex-Mother-in-law had an early 90's model that was still going strong with well over 200K in 2015. That one had the 3.4 liter Chevy motor. Yeah, the Japanese got credit for American reliability on that one.
As popular as the Isuzu Rodeo was especially down here in South Florida they're mediocre reliability history it's one of the main reasons GM abandoned the brand people expected a lot more from a Japanese automaker when it came to Quality. Honda dropped the Passport once the new ('03) Pilot debuted in June 2002, much like the SLX was only supposed to stay on until the MDX. The MDX came first and the Pilot is actually based on the MDX (and not the other way around), which in turn is a modfied midsize platform (Accord, '99-03 3.3 TL and '99 Odyssey RL1).
My father used to had a 1998 Isuzu Rodeo similar to the one that's shown here. He said it was a piece of junk with faulty gauges, engine, transmission, and other things that are in poor quality.

fine brakes with a bad driver
The brakes on these vehicles are fine. I would know, i drive a second gen trooper everyday
