Folks, this model does not come with a power meter like I said it does. I apologize for the mistake! (I must have popped one on when I got it and then promptly forgot... Dang it.)
Thanks for the shout out. It's always fun working these events on the moto and helping out the riders, especially when I recognize a face or two. Always feel free to let us know what we can do to make it better.
What a saver video. My routes have changed a bit where I have to go through some gravel dirt areas and that around 2-4 miles of a ride and I just got 32mm tires for my madone sl6. Been running stock 25s for a while and exited to see how these new meaty ones handle
@@TheRidewithBenDelaney Here is a GoPro video from the race. Don't think it is from the Pro-race, but that was the same day. ua-cam.com/video/GPUFbTxprng/v-deo.htmlsi=b5fPas4Rj795aeU_
This is my style, although my new aero road bike is less than a year old so I'm afraid to take it somewhere it could get scratched yet. Still rocking the CX bike with 50mm aero wheels and 32mm tires.
yessir! I put 32mm tyres on an aeroad slx and still there's room! honestly thinkin about just switching wheels instead of having multiple bikes at this point
Right? It’s like that meme from a while back showing an aero road bike with a big handlebar bag: “ruin 15 years of aero engineering with this one simple trick!” (I wrapped my number on the Trek here more so I could see if the DJI camera was recording or not. With a GoPro, I can hear it turn on and off. Not so with the Action Cam.)
Another great segment - full of useful info. The looks of the new Trek frame are a bit polarizing too me but hats off to Trek for some cool innovation. If I might make a suggestion regarding video production: using 2 cameras makes a lot of sense, and your cameras match really well. The composition of the shots is too similar though and it’s jarring to look at. Your main (master) shot is good; try raising or lowering the 2nd camera a couple of feet - and set the focal length of that lens either tighter or looser than your master shot. Keep up the good work…!!
Thanks for the feedback. That's helpful. I set them both at 4.5, but will set the second one tighter and move it further from the first camera. Cheers!
Try it the other way around. Your making all your eye-contact with your master shot, so make it the tighter shot. The B-camera should be wider & most likely at a lower angle - but not too far from the A-cam.
The current gen Cervélo S5, which is among the fastest road bikes in terms of aerodynamics, officially has a (comparatively) huge tire clearance of 34mm. Ever since it came out, I've been waiting for someone to finally slap some 35mm knobby tires on that bike, take it onto an actual gravel trail and report how it went. Ben? : )
Lots of different ways to do it. Some people were on gravel bikes with big tires and some were on skinny road bikes. Endurance bikes and race bikes are usually two different things; mainly in geo but also in spec like a compact crank like you list. An endurance bike would have been just fine.
Great review as always. Been considering a SL 7🤔 before we sell out. After that review perhaps I ought to get one. They are such great Value to Ben are they not for the spec?
I know there are naysayers about the 9 tooth on a cassette, would love to see you try the ethirteen Helix Race 9-45. I run a 40 tooth Sram Force, AXS XPLR with the Helix cassette, Amazing range in the 9 , 37-38 mph not an issue. and the 45 is awesome in the steeps. 2 tooth jumps in the lower part of the cassette work great from 18-24 ish mph,. maybe its just me.
Totally agree. Efficiency when in the 9 tooth doesn't matter much because it's a bailout gear. Just let's you keep power when others are spun out. If i lose a small percentage of efficiency in that situation, which happens for maybe 2% of the race, I'm good with that. 9-50 or even 9-52 is the way.
and add to that, if you are a chain hot melt waxer (I am) then the efficiency loss is even less for the articulation around the 9 compared to grinding wet lubes...win/ win in my book.@@DanHoopes211
Years from now we might look at the era of short-reach rim brakes and the super-narrow tires they required as the anomaly it actually was. Before that pretty much any/every road bike was a "gravel bike", just look at the photos of Coppi or Gimondi racing on unpaved roads. Why is anyone surprised that things swung back to enough room for fat tires on road bikes, now that disc brakes have taken over?
Knowing that you can use almost any road bike on Gravel these days it´s funny that Canyon offers 3 different ones in their lineup: Grail, Grizzl, and Endurace.
@@TheRidewithBenDelaney I road the pro team version. Love it. But this one takes 40mm conti terra speed. It has a 3.0 shock. Much better option for gravel than the crux (crossbike) with trail in the 67s. Dont get me wrong I love the crux, but for fast gravel in 2023, Roubaix sl8 with 40mm all the way. It's super stable on descent and rides good. Not like my SL8, of course, but super comfy (that's not endurance boring comfy, btw)
@@TheRidewithBenDelaney hey :) 6 feet are actually 182.88 cm (according to google). hope i didn't miss something here, just thought it might possibly help to clear that up :D
If there is 75 miles of road and less than half of that gravel....then it's NOT a gravel race. This was a road race with some gravel sections. Very dumb.
I would say it's still relevant and calling it a gravel race or not is up to the person's personal opinion. In car terms a sports car that can survive a 35/40 split of offroad and road is impressive and speaks to versatility. At least to me. That's so close to 50% that you can call it what you want but I think it's ok to call it whatever.

Maybe hand out burritos? 😀 Thanks for being out there. Definitely adds a sense of safety in addition to the extra fun factor with time splits.
Thx for trying out something new and regaling us with your exploits
Awesome video! Such a nice bike, did not expect you to ride it in a gravel race, but I’m impressed! 🙌

How have the 32mm tires been?
Well done
thinking outside the box for a bike review... i can not hate on this
1:49 75 miles of pavement and 110 mile gravel race, that sounds more like a road race with a gravel section 🙂.
Mr Delaney, let's see a LAB 71 on the next Gravel Race please!!👍
One of my fav UA-camrs. Go Ben!
Rasmus Bøgh Wallin was 3rd in the danish gravel Championship On a similar bike last weekend. Keep up the good work over there in the States 😊👍
Even more insane when you consider the bat-shit weather conditions at the Danish national championship 😅

Kinda funny that more and more gravel bikes come with an integrated aero cockpit, but you gotta put a very non aero race number in front

It should be enacted as Law within the Spirit of Gravel.

The old Cervélos wouldn't take anything larger than a 25
That seat tube look’s dodgy… LOL

Why not an endurance race bike with 32mm tires and the same 50/34 gearing?

Thank you. They are a pretty good value, yes. Not Canyon-level, but that's not apples to apples since you can dial the fit at your local dealer.
Need that smoothing over here in Indiana, most of the gravel roads will be miles of washboard making it not fun to ride...
Mag choloride is a thing of beauty. It smells terrible for a couple of days, and it doesn't last forever. But it makes a world of difference.
But not very ecofriendly unfortunately... many studies on the subject by the University of Colorado.@@TheRidewithBenDelaney

That’s why I got my Domane RSL for racing. Same aero profile as the Madone and Emonda and it’s fast.

Truth.

It blows my mind that you could use a road bike with 28mm tires on gravel. That isn't possible in the Ozarks!
Gravel is a pretty wide term, eh? I was planning on bringing 45s to Big Sugar. Due to poor planning I have 40s.
You should try the new Roubaix SL8 with 40mm tire, fast gravel for sure.
I am keen to get on one. I've ridden a few iterations of the Roubix over the years, including a few models on the Roubaix course. I'm a fan.

Beagle!
It's time for the aero bikes to have 35 mm clearance. The perfect commuter bike

it comes with a powermeter in stock?
Shoot I sure hope so. Maybe I screwed that up. Let me double check!
Dang it, I screwed that up. It does not come with a meter. Thanks for flagging that.
28mm?!?!
Is it still considered gravel if you can ride 28mm??? Haha
Unpopular opinion: any gravel race that be completed on a road bike with bigger tires isn't really a gravel race.

Policing gravel sounds pretty dumb tbh
In Australia, a ride or race with less than 50 per cent gravel to pavement is often termed a 'mixed terrain' ride.
