Thank you for speaking so passionately about this. In so many creative industries, the culture is "you have to tolerate whatever abuse comes your way, because you're completely replaceable". It makes me furious. You shouldn't have to choose between your dream job and your safety.
One thing that struck me as odd when I looked at his influences that he lists: they're all alternative acts that his comedy bore no resemblance to at all. He always wanted to be seen as alternative in some regard. He wanted to be a countercultural rebel. Problem was: his act was shit. Like really just fucking ABYSMALLY shit. The alternative crowd rejected him, but mainstream comedy fans and TV loved him because it was lowest common denominator. But part of him clearly wanted that punk credibility of being alternative; being "anti-establishment". So when Labour is out of power, he starts rebranding himself as a leftwing political comedian because that's against the current order of things. Problem again was: he was shit at it and the alternative crowd still rejected him. So now he's "anti-mainstream" in the only way suited to his incredibly low skillset: internet conspiracy grifter
Now I understand why RB grifted to the right. He knew these allegations would eventually come out. Brilliant move. He knew his right wing audience will back him no matter what he gets accused of, or proven in court.
"Now I understand..."...no. Obviously none of you do. Russkie Brand is a well known public paid Kremlin asset. More than happy to discuss overthrowing the UK & US governments in his multiple Russia Today interviews. Or with his buddy Alex "KGB" Jones. His "audience" is mostly botnet with no stroke.
I for one am incredibly shocked that the guy who felt the need to say "it was consensual" during an on air answer machine message he left a pensioner talking about sleeping with his granddaughter has been accused of assault.
I went to see Brand live back in the day. He told the audience that he was sending people out to approach some people, and if they come up to you, you should come round to stage door after the gig and he would have sex with you. I remember thinking “Wtf?”, and everyone else being “This is fine”. I thought I must be wrong about finding that disturbing.
Similar to you i work in film and tv, and the first job i ever worked on it was an open secret that the transport department where taking young girls (just about legal) to the directors trailer, sometimes in the middle of the night. Since then he's been exposed thankfully for various misconduct, but before then on this production there were a lot of red flaggs and rumours about him that it wasnt a surprise to anyone. Sorry for beint vague but although but although he's been exposed very publicly, nothing has come out about that show specifically. Like you im very invested in this kind of thing because my first experience of working in the industry was extremely toxic. And the fact that he wasn't sacked on that show for a lot of things which would have been an HR nightmare in any other industry told me everything. And when i found out that his regular first AD, who was very much his enabler for his onset conduct, and frankly a bully in his own right, still works (hopefully never in the UK again) sickens me to my core.
Not only that but he preemptively denied all allegations by insinuating that they were all a deep state conspiracy. Do people honestly think 'the illuminati are stitching me up!' Is the normal logical response from an 'innocent' man? 'Why did you steal that car?' "I didn't but that's exactly the kind of frameup the powers that be would do to frame me, eh?"
We really need to have a discussion about fudging our age of consent, raising it to 18 (with some kind of description for teens 17 and under). No, we can't micromanage every age gap in every relationship but should it be legal for grown adults to engage school students?

You know, the industry is just so corrupt and full of “unprofessionalism” that honestly I think it’s probably rather easy to allow this stuff to fly. I think it’s just genuinely the bottom of the barrel as to what’s going on and I hope it’s gonna start the cogs turning to expose it all. Don’t even get me started on just general misbehaviour that goes on that gets overlooked because if you complain you’re just considered a “reliability” or you just haven’t got “thick skin”.
It strikes me though that it's not just the high powered executives who are the problem. People at all levels of production are enabling abusers just to keep their jobs. Whatever job you do, if the workplace is that toxic I would leave, or gladly be fired if it meant I was protecting people from abuse.
I think it's fair to say the 00s was the decade of shame for tv and "celeb" culture. Lest we forget, sixth formers and undergraduates who otherwise would have labelled themselves as "progressive" used to lap up Little Britain back then, completely unironically.
No, it's the decade that gets the most attention now. It's always been like that and probably worse as there wasn't media attention on it. Education about sexual abuse didn't exist the way it does now. Most terrible things that have happened in twenty years were likely much worse in the centuries leading up to it.
I think some of the responses to this show just how defanged the country expects journalism to be now. I'd call Brand's instant response a post-truth nightmare, but it's not even convincing enough to be that. He refuted every claim without knowing what the claims were? Despite having a turbulent career of controversy? The confirmed text apology from his phone kinda proves his private record isn't spotless, so why even half-heartedly refute it? Losing faith.
I wasn't really surprised by the allegations, there have been rumours about this for a while. I was surprised at how recently it was going on, like only ten years ago. I thought the BBC had cleaned up its act in terms of dealing with abuse.
I wouldn't be surprised if Nerdrotic will reach out and try to platform Russell Brand (I mean, he's already supported Alex Jones, so that says a lot about his integrity, or lack thereof). It's pretty fair to assume at this point. Anyways, great video once again. Victims of this systemic abuse need a voice, certainly more than trolls do.
One aspect I haven’t heard discussed much is what role his agent was playing in all of this. Who was it getting him booked for TV gigs while all this was going on?
His turn to this political and philosophical 'guru', never sat right for me. I didn't care if he would signal a lot of populist left wing talking points (and then just populist in general later on), I never thought this was the guy we should be getting advice from. And why did he do it? This is my own theory but what if he knew one day these allegations would come out? So he built a kind of 'cult' following to create a defensive shield when the time came. It would also have given him the opportunity to continue his abuses in a 'safe' space, as cult leaders all too often do.
