In this video, we react to a daring challenge: Is it possible to drive from John O' Groats to Land's End in just one day? We're talking about traversing over 800 miles across Great Britain, from north to south, in a Range Rover, before the sun sets. Spoiler alert: we still don't know, because sometimes, even the best plans don't quite work out...

Between, roughly, the 30th of May and 14th of July the UK does not experience true night. Even though the sun does set it is always so close to the horizon that it is only ever twilight, not night, and the sky is always somewhat light. I have an no issue with checking the speed as only need to now and again really and if you maintain the gap to the vehicle ahead you should be about right anyway. And you have to be over the limit for quite awhile to get a ticket. And lets not forget that speedos are generally out by 10% so if you're double 70mph in reality its 67. Also you can have google maps on which gives am audible signal of you over speed. Average cameras really do work to help congestion and keep traffic flowing. And soon it won't be a problem with the government pushing to have GPS speed limiters as standard on new cars so no one can speed on any road.

Remember the adage: "In America, a hundred years is a long time. In Britain, a hundred miles is a long way."
American road infrastructure is built to facilitate high-speed, long-distance driving. British roads (as you can see) aren't. The country roads are generally narrow and winding. Even the motorways are specifically designed to avoid long straight stretches, so that drivers must stay alert and can't be lulled into a trance. This means driving in Britain, even if you stick to the motorways, requires more concentration and is more tiring than driving in America.
My husband and I used to travel between Manchester and London several times a year, a drive of something like 250 miles. This is a good five to six hours of driving (depending on traffic) and about as much as you'd want to cover in a day without pushing yourself. It will probably make you laugh in the States when I say we drove 250 miles and were always glad to stop for a break in the middle.

The sun will rise at around 4:44 a.m. Despite being the longest day of the year, the summer solstice does not actually have the earliest sunrise of the year. Hi Steve and Lindsey! To answer your question about how much motorway driving you would have to do, If you were driving to Land's End from John O'Groats, the journey through Scotland would mostly be on non-motorway roads with some short motorway trips. However once you get into England about 80% of the journey is on motorways. Specifically the M6 and the entire M5. Once you get to the end of the M5 at Exeter the rest of the journey continues on the A30.

We danced at a wedding on the Orkney Islands, off the coast of Northern Scotland, outside at 1am and then wandered home in the light.
The roads are very twlisty and quite narrow by US standards but they are main roads. It’s about a 6 hour drive from Edinburgh to John o Groats. December 21 (shortest day) 7:45/15:30.
Also the further north you go in th summer months the days are longer, but in the winter they are shorter.
Note that that in the summer months there is light (twighlight) a good 30 or so minutes before/after sun up and sun downs.
Around a month before and after each solstice we gain/loose around 4 minutes a day... Which doesn't sound much but over 10 days that's 40 minutes or over a month is 2 hour's gained or lost.

Daylight depends on the time of year - normally before summer solstice (longest day of the year - this year, it was 17 hours of daylight), it starts getting light at around 04:00, and I noticed a couple of days ago that there was still a patch of light (was still dark, there was just a patch) at around 22:20 (but usually around 21:00/21:30 you would say its night-time).
After solstice, it starts getting lighter later in the morning and darker earlier at night.
Eventually it starts getting light between 07:00 and 08:00 and getting dark at 16:00 in Autumn/Winter.

Unless posted, Speed limits on a road with no street lights is 60 or 70 if it is a dual carriageway (divided highway). With street lights the limit is 30mph. Any other speed limit would need regular repeater signs.

From ireland here 👋 as i am watching this video right now, it is currently 10pm and it is still bright out, it will start getting dark by 11pm-ish. The sun rises at 5am.
And then on the flip side in winter sun set around 3ish and it's fully dark by half past 4. Very depressing 😕

It doesn't get properly dark at this time of year in the Far North of Scotland, guys. The Shetland Islands are famous for midnight sun - although that does require the right weather conditions around the equinox, which doesn't always happen... John o' Groats is approximately 230 miles from the UK motorway network, which also only extends southwest as far as Exeter. There are only a few short sections of narrower, two-lane carriageway along most of that distance. In normal road conditions, the first 230 miles should take just over four and a half hours. The motorway system then continues a further 490 miles to just west of Exeter, which in normal conditions should take 8 hours and 15 minutes. The remaining 117 miles (via the A30 of which, all except the last 20 miles is 2-lane dual carriageway), should take 2 hours and 22 minutes - all timings according to the AA, which is one of the national motoring organisations. Hence, the journey includes a total of 490 miles / 8.5 hours on (mostly) 3-lane + hard shoulder motorways (with grade-separated junctions, vehicle restrictions, 70 mph limit) and 347 miles / 6 hours and 40 minutes on A-class trunk routes (of which about 247 miles are on single carriageway trunk roads and the remaining hundred on dual carriageways, both without hard shoulders and some flat junctions, open to all traffic and both with 70 mph limits for cars - except where signposted differently). Actual driving time is therefore about 12 hours, excluding stops and should therefore be possible in daylight from early May through to the end of July.

So glad he got out and showed New Lanark, it's a UNESCO world heritage centre. It's a 18th century mill village, in the Clyde Valley. The river Clyde is the river that runs through Glasgow. Lovely wee place, Sophia would love it as it has loads of stuff on for kids. It's about an hour from Glasgow & Edinburgh. This is where us locals go, so when you come add it to your list. It's not all about Edinburgh.

The UK is roughly on the same latitude as Newfoundland in Canada, but due to the pecularities of USA climate and the Gulf Stream, etc. the UK climate is more like the North Eastern states (Maine, New York, Vermont). USA's climate varies from the South West (hottest and driest) to the North East (temperate and wetter) rather than by straightforward latitude alone.
The Caithness region of Scotland has a population of around 26,000 people; you aren't really hitting any urbanisation til you get to Inverness, and then not really til you approach Dundee and Edinburgh. Bear in mind that Indiana is 1.2x larger than the whole of Scotland and has over a million more people.

Id estimate round here in the Summer, it doesn't really ever get "dark" even when the sun has set, especially not like it does in winter months. At the moment sunrise is 04:10 and sunset is 21:40 but between those times it never really gets super dark. In contrast during winter sunrise is about 07:30 ish and sun set as early as 16:30-17:00, very dark before you have even left work.

There's an annual bike ride called Chase The Sun. It takes place on the longest day of the year (last weekend as it happens); you start at sunrise on the east coast and the goal is to reach the west coast before sunset. So yeah, if you can do it on a bike then you can certainly do it in a Range Rover. (EDIT: I wrote this before I realised he was doing the length of the UK. The bike ride goes from Isle of Sheppey in the east to Weston super Mare in the west, it's about 200 miles).

We also have one of the most rarest habitats on earth in the UK there are 260 chalk streams in the world, and the majority of them - 85% - are in the UK, mostly in southern and eastern England. They only exist when chalk bedrock meets the surface, which is why they're so rare. I have one about 10miles from me its where the river that flows though my town comes from

In the UK on the shortest day, the sun will rise around 3:00 to 3:30 am, depending on how far North you are, and will not set until around 22:30 (10:30 pm) giving up to approx. 17 hours of daylight, again the exact amount will depend on how northerly you are. On the shortest day, the sun will not rise until around 8:00 am and set at (16:00) 4:00pm. We don't have long straight roads in many places as you do in America, so driving distances are more tiring. On a single carriageway, the speed limit is 60MPH on a dual carriageway and motorway the limit is 70mph, unless otherwise stated. 'Built up' areas (towns, cities etc) have much lower limits, obviously, usually 30 or 20 mph.

You have to remember Steve and Lindsay the UK is SO much higher latitude that all of the US. The most southerly point in the mainland UK is Lizard Point which is 49.95 N whereas the most northerly point in mainland US in Minnesota is 49.20 N and London is further north than Calgary. John o Groats is level with southern Alaska. This is why we have much longer days in summer and much shorter in winter.
