Is This THE MOST BORING TOWN In New Zealand? First Impression Palmerston North 🇳🇿

- We heard a lot of rumours about Palmerston North being the most boring town in New Zealand. Let's take you on another adventure and explore this town to see if we can prove it wrong. First we are heading to the city centre and square to meet our friend, then to grab some pastries and a pie at Knead Bakery and a coffee at the Bees Knees cafe in the Hokowhitu area. Afterwards we are going to the Esplanade down by the Manawatu River to hop on the Scenic Railway and to check out the Central Energy Trust Wildbase Recovery. We are also getting an ice cream at the "scoop" truck next to the He Ara Kotahi bridge. We had such an amazing day and highly recommend visiting and stopping in Palmerston North if you are on the way!

So glad you enjoyed Palmy! Honestly, my favourite things about Palmy have to be how relaxed it is, the food there is AMAZING (I live in a larger city in nz and I struggle to find better/as interesting options), the library is really good (one of the biggest in nz), and there's sooo many factory shops, reduced to clear, and wholesaler places too. My recommended places to check out are: Albert Street Bakery (My absolute favourite pies), Summerhays Corner Superette (aka. the blue dairy, the ice-cream scoops are massive and they have more tiptop flavours than at other places), and Munchkins (for all your chocolate and fudge needs. Also worth noting the dark chocolate doesn't have milk, so there are many options for those with allergies). There are several other places that I've been to but can't remember the name but I remember there being a really good Vietnamese, and there's a really good Chinese Yum Cha place too. Anyway, just LOTS of great food.
I've watched several of your videos in NZ. And what I've enjoyed more than the actual NZ content is getting to know you two and your personalities. You two are such a wonderful couple, and are just genuinely beautiful people. It's no wonder everyone is nice to you wherever you go.
Arrived in palmy in 2003 and 21 years later, still here ❤
you poor thing🤣
It's a prison
I love Palmy!
When we first came to NZ in 2018, Palmy was our first home. We lived in the mint green art deco house right across the street from the Esplanade entrance. In spring, my view from the lounge was the cherry trees lining the Esplanade's entrance. ❤
We've moved on, but Palmy will always have a special place in my heart.
I have lived in Palmy since 1989 and really love it. It is only 15 minutes to anywhere, not too congested and a fairly safe place to bring up kids. Yes, it is windy at times, but you get used to it. Sometimes, living in a “boring” town is more stress free and makes a nice easy life. I wouldn’t live anywhere else.
I lived in Palmy since I was young with my family. I really loved going to the esplanade, the Lido, the bike trails around the manuwatu river, the library had a popular youth space to socialise and read, the creeks and rivers nearby and the events brought into the square in the middle of town (music events, xmas in the square, cultural events etc). It was a really good place to grow up
As I got older I enjoyed the nightlife and clubbing before moving away. I have since returned and it's much the same. The nightlife is dead now though, and larger cities have more to offer
But Palmerston North is still a really nice place to be and I still love being there
PALMY WAS A HOT SPOT BEFORE GOVT TAXED ALL CLUBS AND BARS. IT WAS THE STUDENT CAPITAL AND WENT OFF ON FRIDAYS AND SAT
No it didnt and no it was never
@@hellypalli 🤓
what I can't hear you?
Yeah, everything was more fun pre covid too
Is that why some of the clubs closed down?
Hello G & M. Hello from South Africa 🇿🇦.
As always. I am excited to see you again. Keep rolling the video..
Thanks my good friend John ❤️
What a great commentary you guys give in all your video's of NZ. AS Kiwis we love all positive comments from visitors.
we do our best! thanks for tuning in my friend!
Agree
loved that you guys enjoyed Palmy! I know you's thought that the hussle and bustle in the plaza and CBD was because of the easter holidays BUT thats just a normal day in good old Palmy!
We came here from Auckland for a short stay in 1979, and we never left. We thought Auckland was the best, but we're wrong, especially now. It is a great place to raise a family, and for older folk, not to busy, or crowded.
Safe travels to you both I've seen what I've wanted yous to see of nz ( except the most amazing part of new Zealand.. coast road nz punakaiki.) Enjoyed watching most of your videos take care.
Thanks for the presentation. I'm actually visiting my daughter in Palmerston North from the US. She's attending high school there. It was good to see your perspective of the city before my arrival.
Arrived in 1982, still here and happy. Thank you for your video
Hey, me and my friend were the Easter bunnies, I was the one who gave you guys the eggs lol, glad you enjoyed palmy! ☺️
haha thats brilliant glad you found the video! were so grateful that this video some publicity in the area :)
Visited the city a few times as my friend lives there. The Bees knees cafe you were sitting outside of is just down Albert street from her home. Have walked down that street to walk down by the river. The Manawatu River walk is very popular for all ages.
The Mall is a great asset especially when the weather is wet and windy or in the Winter. When I went down there many years ago I didn't realize there was a Mall and wondered where everyone was on a cold day then I discovered the Mall! The Victoria Esplanade is one of my favourite places to visit.
The Manawatu River is now where all Punjabs throw funeral ashes. With that and dairy effluent it’s a filthy river.
Argh yes, Mr J Cleese was somewhat scathing of Palmy when he called here some years ago. So the local Council have named the compost heap at the dump after him, visit Mount Cleese there....lol Nice video by the way
grew up in that area of the country, left NZ @ age 20 with the whole family, best decision our parents made got us, am now 50 living in Australia. Seeing this made me smile brings back many great memories. Nostalgic.
Love to watch your videos on N Z. Palmerston north. im very bias lived here all my life.go 10 mins to the north to a place called Feilding especially on a friday which is market day, a gorgeous rural town.keep up your video's. Xx
You can find beauty anywhere though! If you have an open mind you can make anything exciting or beautiful ♥️ yup we have been to fielding for the market is was a great day out.
I’m from Tauranga originally, but have lived all over the North Island. I came to Palmy in 2021 with just the intention of staying for a week to catch up with dad. I will admit it definitely was a lot smaller than what I thought it would be…and the drivers are hands down the worst I’ve ever experienced in any city I’ve lived in thus far. The number of pot holes are a few bumps away from feeling like you are off-roading through the bush, and parking is ridiculous. However I found the locals to be pretty relaxed and I enjoyed a lot of what was on offer arts, culture and nature wise.
Within 2 weeks I’d made the decision to move here 😂. Within 7 months I’d landed one of my dream jobs teaching art to my students in a studio/gallery setting, and doing art projects with city council. I had also promised myself I wouldn’t study ever again, but with Massey right there I was able to pursue my degree in Zoology Science (which I’d wanted to do since I was a grommet!). I had been told “Oh don’t go to Palmy it’s a dead end there and loaded with gang violence, go to Welly”. Which was ironic, because I’d spent a lot of my adult life looking and living in a lot of our bigger super cities with the promise of “Opportunities everywhere” ….yet I was able to attain most of my goals within a 2 year period, from “Dead Ass” Palmy.
It’s definitely not the perfect town…by any means, but from a personal perspective and point of view it can work if you are art, nature and creative minded. I’m sure there are plenty more fields outside of the arts etc that can work too. I will also admit opportunities are slim for the picking but they are there if you get off your ass and look instead of moping around like an unmotivated and entitled mullet waiting for everything to be handed to you. The community are pretty helpful and there is good energy most places you go. It just needs an update.
Excellent episode all 3 of you creating your own fun, great personalities and loves the accents. That pie looks good though, haha I went down the road and had one after seeing your vedio. Thankyou and looking forward to see more
That pie was delicious! We had a brilliant day in palmy ❤️
My beautiful city
I living in Palmerston North ❤
Imagine coming from Palmerston North and seeing this video. How awesome! Not sure if you’re still in NZ but Hokianga is beautiful . Tane Mahuta tree is incredible but the roads are a bit tricky.
I'm from palmy I live 25min drive away out to Himatangi Beach. Beautiful beach Especially in the Summer time Highly recommended good shop beautiful ice cream and good cosmopolitan Bar and grill 25min drive to palmy.Palmy Hard.❤
I've lived in many places, Central coast Australia, chistchurch, auckland, napier and some others but after living in Palmy for the last 10 years, it suits my lifestyle the best. Now i have a family here.
The guy on the bench in the square with his journal bought a smile to my face.
I had many happy years living in Papaioea (Palmerston North).
I'm from palmy as we lack in tourists we have one of the best universities crown Institute of learning polytecs industrial centers and much more we help drive production and knowlege
I'm so glad you had a good time in Palmerston. I'm very fond of the place. I was born there, family moved away when I was 3, but I moved back for work for a year straight after university before going back to grad school (I saw the building I worked in in the distance in one your shots). Met lots of great people. It wasn't quite as vibrant back then (mid-80's) but still a very culturally active place with music and art etc. I would quite happily live there again. Mind you, you did strike it fairly lucky with the weather. It gets pretty cold in winter, especially with that wind off the Tasman Sea blowing across the plain from the coast.
Thanks for giving us an insight of the good times in palmy! We’re glad this gave you a little glance of the area and brought back some special memorise ♥️ we certainly were lucky with the weather though haha and it’s a really nice place!
Thank you for sharing. Initially, New Zealand may seem boring, especially for those who like the hustle and bustle. But this is the place to find calm and no pressure for excessive stress.
Living here - liking it - glad you did .
Living the good life in palmy! Loving it ♥️
@@GlenAndMado Have followed your NZ Trip - now going back a year - Shy Mado back then .....
@@kevinhope6182 haha enjoy it! You’ll have a great time!
I was last at my home town in 2012. I watched your video and see PNNZ has had some interesting growth for entertainment on a sunny day. That wind is still there though.
We live in Palmerston North. I'm from Pahiatua. And I highly recommend you do a video around Pahiatua just like this one and the recently permanently closed down primary school Hillcrest School on Pahiatua's Princess Street is worth the look around. Hillcrest has alot of history starting off as a high school and then a primary school till it's 2022 permanent closure. Plus the Pahiatua Maternity Hospital buildings are also worth looking around as the permanently closed down hospital has a alot of ancient history. I was actually born there in April of 1979. Pahiatua is worth the look especially the history of the town itself at the Pahiatua Museum on Sedcole Street behind the New World Pahiatua carpark and Pahiatua Mitre 10 Mega. And another recommendation is Pukaha Mount Bruce Wildlife Centre between Eketahuna and Masterton.
there used to be the best japanese restaurant in NZ on the west corner of the square... not sure if its still there... Hanamizuki
I went last year and it was really good. Best sushi I've had for quite some time. It's was shut last week when I tried to go. Owners, were on holiday for a month. They are back mid June. Highly recommend.
hahahahahaha bloody jason that cheeky bugger. "i'll be starvinnnn" hahahahhaah im rolling on the floor larfinnn
Thanks for sharing your awesome experiences ... what fun you're having
it was such a great day!
You did it again!! Never disappoint. Sorry about the odd troll in your comments. Just ignore the ignoramus. Great to see Myra again. If you've now left the Philippines, hope you are enjoying your next destination.Take care! 👍🕊✈🚖 🛵 🧭🌞🌠🌠
Haha no stress there Lesley thanks for tuning in again ♥️ we have a couple of days left here! We’re just at the airport now going to one of the islands!
Oh no palmerston north its very beautiful town a lots of beautiful parts ❤❤❤
Good you enjoyed our Palmy town. I noticed your Irish accent right away, and Myra’s American. I like what’s written on Myra’s shirt - FOREVER AND EVER AMEN.
It wasnt boring growing up in Dannevirke. Once a month or so we'd take a trip to Palmy, walk around the Plaza, have Macdonalds in The Square, feed the ducks at the Esplanade, shop at Pak n save and be asleep before we got to the gorge. Better times
Spent 3 years there at university in the 70's. Plenty of fun back then. But it has certainly changed quite a bit from what I remember about the place.
Danke 🎉we used to lived in Palmerston North loved it😍move to Sydney 24 yrs.
Awesome video guys, Palmerston north is only 20 to 30 minutes frome several beaches so it's not to far to go.
You’re totally right that’s what we mean it’s actually pretty close to the sea! So plenty to do haha ♥️
I'm so glad you guys enjoyed Palmerston North. I was born in palmy, and I Recommend Hokowhitu Sushi, they have very good sushi and I honestly enjoy going to timezone, play 2-win, silky otters in palmy.
Ha- it is funny that PN gets such a bad rap. It's not so much of a tourist town. We called the "farmers market" the "flea market"- but good value vege's etc! It was a lovely place to grow up- good schools and activities, the river (which we would swim in all summer) and nice and flat to bike around to hang out with friends 🙂 Yes to the train at the Esplanade!
Some interesting characters out there for sure. A new perspective of Palmy for me.
Hi G&M..l.love your videos.and thank you for sharing them.
It was our pleasure and hope you enjoyed our video!
Palmy is the best town in the country.
Love here ❤
you got that right!
Hey homies! You discovered PN! You got stood over by the "homeless" guy! The Easter Bunny guy has a heart of gold. Who said Palmy was boring! Greatest little town in New Zealand - after Hamilton, or so they say. I'm glad you enjoyed my home town. I loved it too.
I have lived here a long time best food lots to do have been all over the world happy here good life
I am some glad you enjoyed your weekend here in palmy
Being student at palmy during 2003-2005, gosh I miss the town and people there!
The good owl days! 🙌
40:46 FAHS mentioned!
Nice one guys. Maybe Palmy is boring. But i love Palmy. Such a great calm place to live 🙌
It is a city and there is a lot more to it. Depends what you want out of life. Not the place if you are into clubbing but great for outdoor activities. Great cycling and only half an hour from beach or 2 hours from ski slopes.
Glad you didn't give in to Jason. I went to Palmerston North once and I really thought it was boring but you proved me wrong.
Thanks to "country wide Pie Competitions" this has made pies so much better/bigger/better fillings/much more variations. I would say after watching this for the 2nd time, that Aotearoa/New Zealand our food, shopping, things to do, everything has improved 1000% in the last 44 years.
The train ride is way more fun than it should be, and the wheel running device is hysterical fun.
There is an event called Superstock teams champs that is fun to be a part of. Basically, all the teams go to the square and get their cars checked to see if their cars are legal to race then they go to the track and race for 2 nights'
Great dining in Palmy. Central/lower North Island location, reasonable accomodation choices and shopping. So it's a bit of a destination, in spite of it's reputation.
Love Palmy but dont really agree with filming homeless people for content on your video. They clearly have mental health and drug problems. Its exploitation and doesnt reflect well on the individual or the city.
It's kiwifruit Glen not Kiwi. Palmerston North is ok as a city as for being boaring it's all about what you make of it. People say the same thing about Timaru that theres nothing to do. Yet it has a beach right by the CBD (Caroline bay) the public gardens, one of the biggest playgrounds in new Zealand etc... it all really depends on what your into
IVe tried to educate many Americans that it’s kiwifruit…..alas a lost cause. 😁
Fancy trying to correct people when your still wrong 😂
Come to Whanganui 😊😊
Another fuckin boring town , nothin at all ……
Even fkn worse 😂😂😂
Hey G & M, thanks for helping Jason out. 5 sugars & 2 scoops of ice cream in a coffee would make me go bananas. Myra is a real live wire. Enjoyed the P/North vid, but wild horses couldn't drag me there !
You that right buddy! I’d be jumping of the walls if I consumed so much sugar 😂 anyways hope you enjoyed and it’s not everybody anyways haha
Hey team, there are more boring towns in NZ than Palmy, at the risk of offending kiwis I won't name them here.
I think the kumara lady was more about making a sale than being talkative lol
You definitely got that right! ❤️
The kumara lady is proof Palmy is not boring.
Wanganui is a perfect example.
its best features are not being full of Dorkies and its a long way from Queen St have these two been to the Hauraki hotspots of Thames/Ngatea /Paeroa/Morrinsville ???
Palmy lol I was born there ❤ but grew up in Wellington.
Stumbled on your video of where I live. Nice run down of the place. It's definitely a city that caters more to the family. Great place to raise kids imo, I think those who are looking for night life and the like aren't so keen on the place as we don't have many big events. Plenty to do if you look for fun the way you two do.
Interesting that the market didn't have the churro stand when you were there and usually there is a couple stalls selling some other interesting foods that are good for a morning snack. Other than that you nailed it with the general vibe of that market.
Omg I just saw my friend in your video 😂😂 I'm from Feilding 🙂
I went to university in Palmerston North. Back then it was full of iconic student pubs and the Massey University campus was a really vibrant place. Apart from the shopping plaza at one end of The Square, there isn't a lot to do. The nightlife is a shadow of its former self and the University doesn't have the student numbers to create that energy it once had. One thing is for certain, the crap weather hasn't changed.
The homeless guy saying if you give him money he can give up & go home early,I live in Palmy & can tell you that most of them have homes, they're just out there hustling to get free money, glad you didn't give him cash.
I have heard the Trolley Guy has a home in Clyde Cres. Unsure how true that is though.
Palmy used to be a hot spot. Back when there was heaps of clubs. It used to be called the student capital. Now its boring asf because all the clubs closed down...
This city used to be fun...
My home town! A great place to live! 🇳🇿
Fucking boring town
I found it a pretty crap place to live.
But to be fair: It wasn’t the worst. The farmers market was a highlight. Some of the boozers were pretty good. Lots of loose young ladies about. The theatre there was surprisingly good too.
I'm new here to UA-cam about 3weeks seeing vlogger in palmerston North that closer to my hometown I'm just in levin one hour from palmerston North
palmerston north might be flat but thank god, so we can ride our bikes ans scootters, go for long walks without climbing mt everest. sorry my caps button is stuck. there are so many shops . lovely parks . swimingpools with heated water greate for phissio and sore backs trust me this i know. food shops omg the bargains are wonderfull.. i dont drink butn i hear there are great barsw for all ages,. there is a beautifull river . so who said palmy is boring . go to the square in palmerston and ask what is there to do for fun they will help you full brochures and lovely people. there are also care racing. and i know theres more like home shows etc. palmerston north is wonderfull as are the people leave them alone, its a clean town clean streets side cafes .. everything you want and need is in palmerston, i promise you this, theres a petting zoo. just go and have fun plwase...no i dont live there im from napier but ended up buying a house in pahiatua a small town only one grocery shop but the shop keepers are wonderfull, tidy streets clean no rubbish.. come to new zealand enjoy our beautifull country both palmy and pahiatua have movie thearters. parks cafes. ok
we drove through Palmerston North last month on our way to Wellington ! maybe we should have stopped for a couple of hours en route, but didn't have enough time ! it looks ok.
It’s a good spot you should definitely check it out!
their donuts and filled cream things are pricey usually around $4.50 at most bakeries, the pies look about right $7, pricey now aye, so what would you be paying back at your home?
Start of the video got my Holden in the background
Only OGs will remember the two chinese smogasboard trucks at the flea market.
I've just commented on your Oamaru video, but I'll put the info again here. You need to film at 25fpd or 50fps in New Zealand, that's why all the lights are flickering in this video. This video is in 60fps. Our lights run on a 50hz frequency, which is different to some other parts of the world. The framerate is not matching the frequency of the lights, so the flickering is being picked up.
Yeah send the message! But I tried it already and it doesn’t work unfortunately. We move our camera around pretty fast so we need a fast shutter speed to compensate that 🫣
U miss out check out Wanganui and hour from PN we know for our glass blowing & River.
wind is great lite people just get blown away so us heavy people are the norm great
Palmy hall I stay here knowledge city yall Palmy Saturday market we always get the churros from there warms the kids hearts.
Palmy is Ok but not probably for people who can't make their own fun or need flashy excitement. The Army boys from nearby Linton Army Camp used to (or maybe still do) make Friday nights pretty exciting apparently.
Thanks for being responsible for the homeless guy and offering him JUST food...as they take money and use it for other non food stuff.
Lol parked outside my bloomin house at the beginning
It's only boring if ya make it
Best experience is the manawatu gorge closed SH3 road walk shhh
when i moved to palmy it was all fun and all but as the years go by it got more boring and if you want a fun town i would highly recommend levin
How?
How could you say it’s boring looks beautiful to me, I’m in Alexandra South Island. Depends what you call boring.XXXXXX
thats what we have been trying to explain, we love palmy!
It's the town actor and comedian John Cleese made scathing comments about years ago. Some say It suffers a serious case of small town syndrome.
Can you please do Whanganui
We did in another episode! 🙏
34:04 I thought the dude on the right was Kyle Sandilands.. Kyle's the type that'd photobomb himself with a menacing look.
7:15 👍
So weird seeing my city in a video
@@oakous I know and we made it look great 👀
Talofa and Kia ora Mado and Glen 🥰
Lol Glen the market lady is trying to add up the prices while you're talking
Oops 🫣😂
2nd Another great vid well done.
I been in palmy for two years for school
Palmy is always fun if you’re a farmer - quote from my grandpa
I'm afraid John Cleese (British author actor and comedian most well known for Monty Python) got there years before you guys and was most scathing about the boredom factor of "Palmy". and yep I'm a kiwi!!
I wanted to go to Palmerston north for the superstock teams champs, until I realised it was like a 6 hour drive from Auckland
awh sure go for it! your missing out if you haven't seen palmy 😂😉
