As all kids know; it's called having 2 tummies - 1st for the meal and the 2nd for dessert.
And 2 waistlines🙂
LOL!!
The moment you say to yourself “I’m not hungry for that” means you aren’t hungry. I always keep some boiled eggs, cooked bacon and hamburger patties in my fridge and if I feel hungry after my omad I got to the fridge and if none of those 3 foods look appetizing then I know I’m not hungry snd go for a walk to take a long bath.
Darn good idea, I started with Walmart sausage Pattie’s or a raw Nathan’s hot dog.
I'm having trouble because I'm really truly hungry and my stomach hurts. But I CANNOT put anymore beef in my mouth . The smell of it cooking is nauseating and I'm gagging trying to eat it.
But I'm so hungry.
@@louisacapell try other meats or dairy. Different flavors or textures can help that. It happened to me twice where no carnivore foods were appetizing at all so I just tasted until they did which was only about 2-3 days.
Here are my personal tips for struggling with hunger pain:
First, try drinking a big cup of water with some electrolytes in it. This is what I did when I felt hungry when I first started Keto and fasting. It’s amazing how drinking that water helped reduce those hunger pains and cravings.
Most likely your hunger pains are from the release of hormone ghrelin and you have to push through it because it’s a learned response - like Pavlov’s dog. We are trained to eat certain times of the day or when certain things trigger a response. That hormone doesn’t mean you are hungry, but that you have been conditioned to eat. The more you resist that hormone’s dominance over your diet, the more it will go away. I’ve had to learn not to believe my body when it demands food. I have plenty of fat stored up and my sugar is stable, so I am ok and I won’t starve.
I remind myself that it is ok to be hungry and this feeling will go away. And then I drink water with electrolytes or do an activity to get my mind off the hunger and it goes away.
Learning to trust that your body is ok is difficult. If you are not sure if you “need” food or if you are just conditioned to eating it at certain times or at certain amounts, test your blood sugar and make sure your electrolytes and hydration are balanced. Make sure you are sugar is stable. If there is no medical reason to eat, your body is ok even when it is hungry, so tell that hunger pain to go take hike - you are not going to listen to it anymore.
I actually have a little dark (95%-100%) dark chocolate, cup of decaf coffee with cream, it's a great desert. I also sometimes eat a "clean" fat bomb if I need it. The thing I like best about eating ketogenically is that I don't feel deprived.
Me too!
That's what I do just a couple of small bits & coffee that's all I need. 😋
I always eat unsweetened bakers chocolate now (if I eat chocolate at all). It does take some getting use to because it is bitter, but just like with black coffee, you acquire a taste for it after a while. I tried eating a piece of Ghirardelli’s 90% dark a while ago and almost spit it out. Yuck. It didn’t taste good to me at all anymore. I wanted the unsweetened chocolate.
I love to unwind after dinner by having a decaf coffee with cinnamon and curling up with my hubby and pup. ☕️
Yes, Dr Cywes you did make me think, and that's part of the reason I return regularly. I love the holistic (physical, emotional, psychological) approach you take to weight loss. Many times you explain some phenomena, and I say to myself, that's seems exactly it for me, you've figured me (and likely lots of others) out. Thanks as always.
Awwww, I was so hoping that new research had shown that everyone was wrong and desert was essential for life. And, Dr. Cywes...I do not sound like that!
It IS! Just not the edible kind!! I was half freaking out that he was going to tell us to eat some carbage!! 🤣 Dr. Cywes is the BEST!
Dessert - also RECREATIONAL MEALS - are ALL about emotions!! “Dessert” is what you do AFTER you have met your nutritional needs. YES!!! Get out and walk. Dance. MOVE. When my husband and I got rid of the carb addiction (that time when we would get off the couch and go into town at 9PM to meet our “dealers” Haagen and Dazs :)) - you couldn’t dynamite us out of the house now. BUT, I am still having a problem with my husband and “recreational meals” - he over does it. Messes up his clean stomach. We’re working on this problem and I think he’ll get it as I have, but it’s this ridiculous attitude that eating sugar - too much is EVER ok. It’s not. A little meth, a little heroin, a little alcohol for an alcoholic is NEVER ok. And that’s OK. Bad is bad. Cancer LOVES sugar. Think about and love yourself enough to do what is best for you ALL the time! ❤️🙏🏻
Right on!
Ben and Jerry are two safe-loving friends.
Virus such as shingles can flare back up when sugar has impaired the immune system too often.
My dessert?? Coloring book with gel pens. 😀😀😀
Some dance music for me
Cool idea 🎉🎉
I had to listen to this several times before I could wrap my brain around this. Makes sense that it is all about relaxing . Now to find my deck of cards.
Doc, the brief silence and facial expression after you said “dessert is essential”😆😆😆
Thank you thank you thank you! I find I need a keto dessert even after breakfast and was feeling so weak, but life was getting grim without it! After giving up sooo much to be healthier I still felt guilty about eating a cup of keto ice cream or keto custard after a meal. Thanks for reassuring me that what is working for me isn't wrong!
Your perspective on all this stuff is really amazing! I am so grateful for your words of wisdom! Blessings to you and your family
Thank you Dr. Cywes. Really informative and thought provoking. Love your sense of humour, especially when you mimick Keto/Carnivores disagreeing with what you have said, it really makes me laugh. 😆
SO needed to hear this

Yaaaassss. Me tooooo😛😋
Same here. And an hour on Netflix.
I really really like this ethos.
Desert is the relaxing period.
Spot on, nailed it. The reason why we've been consuming something sweet as a relaxation activity.
Doesn't mean we must consume it.
You have great replacement therapy . 🎉
Every single time i eat near bedtime, i wake up really hungry instead of hungry around noon, and also a terrible taste. Plus higher Fasting blood glucose number in the morning. I sleep worse with a late dinner. Plus if I eat just a snack before bed for the purpose of relaxation, that's another insulin reaction, something I don't need more of. My goal is 2 reactions a day.
Ya, funny one, hey?
A keto chocolate mousse set me back a month on sugar cravings.
We do not need sweet. Unless it is a piece of fruit. I have guavadillas growing in my garden and one in Greek joghurt is refreshing, tart and delicious. But it doesn't make me want more.
Beware of fruit
@@robertcywes2966 Right. Be wary. But if it's grown in my garden, is eaten seasonally and occasionally, I beware. And eat it. I never binged on fruit, ever. But in the past could eat a whole melktert
@@ingridferg9779 Fructose in a pretty wrapper.
I also try to not eat anything with calories after 4 PM, sometimes 5 PM, but usually after 4. A lot of the time, I like to make my last calories just a decaf coffee with heavy cream. I actually love doing that.
Wow! This was so interesting!! I never thought of it in this way....and am anxious to try and find some new "desserts". :) ( ...maybe some reading time or a walk around the block...which it seems I never have time for)
I have a single square of 90% cacao dark chocolate, then sew or knit. Very rarely have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.
My great grandfather always said, I eat my dessert first because I may not live through dinner to enjoy it! Ironically, he died of a cerebric hemorrhage, so dessert is everything to me as well. God rest his soul because he knew how to enjoy life.💙
My dad used to tell us his gpa used to eat dessert first bc he said he might get to full from eating the meal. Ha! Ha!
Oh how I loved this, everything KETO in moderation, thank you Dr Cywes!
Doc, You really set us free at every curve ball!
Thank you for this insight! It really resonated with me and I can’t wait to try out a new post dinner routine😃
I don’t know if you read comments but this is brilliant. Truly brilliant. Thank you!
I ate keto desserts daily for probably the first year .... not anymore after almost 3 years ... I’m carnivore now but I STILL get cravings occasionally .. will be a lifelong struggle
If you do a period of really high fat carnivore, you’ll eventually kill your cravings. I did it (200+ grams per day) for a few months and all cravings stopped.
@@TheRealRealOK I have been high fat carnivore for almost a year .. was keto for 2 years prior .. I’ve done great 👍... but I also know I am a sugar addict and I struggle and always will ... I’ve learned how to avoid it .. still have occasional cravings ✔️
well that's something i never heard before! It's okay to eat late?! I love my late steak dinners and have always felt guilty over it , not anymore! lol
FASCINATING!!!! Does the keto dessert HAVE to be active as opposed to consumptive if the consumed dessert is a small amount of something sweet without carbs? Like a homemade keto cookie or a small amount of sugar free cheesecake filling or a square of sugar free dark chocolate? Can you do both? Have your little low/no carb sweet and then go for a walk? Will that also decrease cortisol levels and increase seratonin?
Calories for your head
sleep prep is so important 😴💕 even a hot shower is a dessert - yes you got me thinking Doc. Love from Australia 🥩🥓🍳🇦🇺Dr Cywes
Doing lowcarb downunder in June
My dessert is a cup of green tea with stevia. I used to have a peanut butter sandwich (keto "friendly" bread) for dessert, but I save those for a couple times per week now for my 2nd meal with chix or beef broth. Works for me in a lot of ways.
I like zero carb hard kombucha and soMe chill music Totally helps
Good Idea Doc.
Keto ice cream with delicious warm keto brownies hits the spot every time. Sorry doc but dessert has to be something I shove in my pie hole 😂 Meditation just doesn’t cut it.
I'd love to see videos geared towards people who are neither addicted to carbs (or anything else) nor use food for emotional reasons. To that end, a video on the most nutritionally complete meals you could eat with the fewest ingredients would be welcome. I'd be great to minimize the number of things needed to be purchased while maintaining proper nutritional consumption.
This is so true! I play Blink with my family ever watching Dr. Cwyes. Totally works. Thanks doc. I literally feel my cortisol go down.
Oh I got you , I thought I was snacking . Desert = relax and unwind
Love this video. You did, indeed, make me think.
And if you have Hashimoto’s, it’s really important to eat a little something about 30 minutes before bed to get a better nights sleep.
Perfect video! Thank you 😊
My Husband listened to the entire video, and heard "Dr. Says I need pizza after every meal"
I am glad that you myth busted the dessert
TV with hubby then playing my Steam games and some youtube. Nightly candy, cake, cookie, donut, ice cream gone since June 2019 when we turned to overall much lower carb not Keto. Gone are the Cheetoes, Potato Chips, Fritos, Goldfish, Cheese Nips I frequently used as my 'lunch'. We've had hamburger, rice, potato in stew and some other things but no Ragu Spaghetti, Pizza, Hot Dogs since then. Mostly meat n veg, meat n veg, meat n veg meals. Took me a hard six months to wean myself off before I could attempt a 'diet'. In my 60s, hubby 70s. A lifetime of more bad eating than good. Hang in there, everyone. Day at a time. If we can do it, anyone can.
"Dessert is an emotional event."
👍 ✅️ 🥩 🥳 😎 🌻 🥩
No. I used to be addicted to sweets, especially chocolate. Now I only feel the need to eat salty food. I am absolutely not interested in dessert. I do put Stevia in my coffee, but that's it.
There are so many things I do for relaxation... meditation, Yoga, swimming, walking, listening to music... who needs dessert???
you are so right!
A wafer thin mint?
its the protein that gives us the satiety not the fat, but great talk :)
Sugar free jello and coconut cream 😄 that’s my dessert
I wanted some zero carb dessert ideas Robert!!😂
I have sugar free jelly/jello with double/heavy cream, its delicious
I'd sooner have a cigarette for dessert than a sweet treat. I think it would probably do me less harm in the long run.
Maybe it might be better to say grace after your meal. Gratitude seems to be something that puts things in perspective, at least for me.
Slim Kind, Sit ..... :-) :-) :-) Thanks Rob, so well explained.... As Always .... Very Best to You and Yours, Cheers from NZ
Unsweetened herbal tea 👍🏻
Eat to live not live to eat. I strive my best to link no emotions or emotional need to food. Been there..... it isn't pretty.
i have some sake after my first of two meals. (20-4 IF)
...and here I thought you were speaking my language, lol!
“Dessert is about the necessary relaxation emotion after dinner”
Yesterday I painted after dinner till bedtime. But then, just before going up to bed, I had a brownie with cream and Strawberries. Slept like a baby.

Nooooooooooo you had me excited then 😂🍨🎂🍰🍫
🤔 where lie the origins of desserts???
I think eating early in the evening was intended to make calorie restriction longer before the next meal the next day. That's how I interpreted it anyway.
Dessert is NOT essential. But I have been raised to have dessert after dinner. I just have a small fat bomb for my psychological craving and go about my business. I know it is just a habit. I do not eat between my two meals a day.
he's not talking about food. he's talking about the emotional relaxation that comes after a big meal
Disagree. It is essential. Not nutritionally but emotionally. And he said it doesn't have to be food.
@@caprice6825 True.
@@maxlee6676 Got it, thanks for the clarification though. 🤣😂😅
@@jrowlove7328 hahaha yee
Do, don’t chew👍🏼😉😂
I disagree completly. Dessert is not only not essential, it makes me sick. I've had Rue en Y Bypass surgery, and all total I've lost 215 pounds thru surgery and doing Keto. After I eat a 4 oz hamburger and small salad I'm full. If I eat anything additional after the meal, it makes me very sick and sometimes it makes me puke. I wouldn't eat dessert if you paid me. I never miss it.

Another lightbulb moment. "Emotional dessert." Love it. Lately, my "dessert" has been watching Carb Addition Doc videos on UA-cam. This will be another one that I save for watching again and again as needed. Thank you!
Same!!!😀
Me too. Love Dr. Cywes. His timing and wit are a bonus! ❤
Me too! But I never had any problems with falling asleep. I go to bed rather late, between midnight and one o'clock but the minute I hit my head on the pillow, I'm fast asleep and wake refreshed at six a.m. sharp. I don't find I need more sleep than that. If I try to go to bed earlier, I wake up at 3 a.m. and fret and worry over everything and nothing till it's time to wake up.
"shooting up just a LITTLE bit o' heroin for dessert"~good grief, about choked on my coffee man! Good thoughts, smart words based on all kinds of truth, Truth, TRUTH.
Sending love, thanks for all of it~ may your efforts continue to bless, & be blessed.
I loved that part! I had to replay it to make sure i heard it correctly.
Coffee, the crack for carnivores ;)
Absolutely ❤️ love my coffee.
For sure, heroin for dessert was my takeaway 🤣🥴
Talk about a refreshing cake, I mean take. No one in the low-carb community that I know of has ever mentioned this subject. It seems almost heretic. And yet it is a completely natural human need/predilection. It's also common sense. Such valuable insights and advice from Dr. Robert.
I was really hoping you’d give us permission to eat ice cream, doc 😂
A little Rebel ice cream once you hit your goal weight or even go below it never hurts. Keep from getting too light lol.
In the evenings after supper, after the dishes have been cleared, the coffeepot set up for the next day, and the cat has been given fresh water, I try to give myself some time for watching television (or a movie with my husband) and knitting.
I’ve always wondered how people can always “find room” for dessert after a huge meal; thank you for explaining this.
Carbohydrates cause craving and there is no end to eating them. It’s as they used to say about “Chinese food” you are hungry 30 minutes later (bc of the rice and sugar sauces). Pro hotdog eating contestants will have a snickers when they can’t eat more hotdogs, and they get a second stomach from it. This is why, no matter where you go, you can’t order food without cheap as dirt biscuits, breadsticks, fry’s, chips, etc are “free” (because you will eat more and you will be happy from it, it will give you your carbohydrate fix.
Why did I get all excited thinking this would be about actual food? I should have known better. Anyway, my consumable dessert of choice is steamed egg pudding. Keto and SO GOOD.
Yes, me too 😂 Now I just want to eat a big bowl of HWC with some stevia... 🤣😱
What is the recipe for that please?
@@JJ-jl1ge on youtube search for steak and butter gal, she has a video for egg pudding. It's basically steamed scrambled eggs. No sweeteners, just creamy eggs.
I fell for it too....lol
@@JJ-jl1ge I don’t know about steamed egg pudding, but I make keto egg custard. I heat
2 1/2 cups of milk (mixed with heavy whipping cream) until it scalds. Beat 4 eggs and 1 tsp vanilla with 1 cup stevia and pour them slowly into the hot milk while whisking. Transfer mixture into custard cups Sprinkle with nutmeg and bake at 475 for the first five minutes, then turn the oven down to 400 and cook for 20-25 minutes or until a knife inserted comes out clean. Cool. Makes 6 small custard cups.Cover and keep in refrigerator until eaten

It all goes back to emotional reprieve. The one element I cannot manipulate.
I 💘 love how he mocks the dissenters
Since discovering you, I realized I am a foodaholic not merely a carboholic. I HAVE to eat as late in the day as possible, b/n 8-10 pm, because once I give myself permission to eat, the floodgates open. But I've had bariatric surgery, my amount of intake may be limited, but too much time before sleep can be my enemy.
So, I'm now going to combine 1 raw egg, a portion of ground uncooked beef liver, and ground beef into a hamburger patty to consume with a choice of fat. I'm also going to figure out how to do this with an egg, small fish and salmon or tuna.
My body feels WONDERFUL at 179lbs. (down from 292lbs.) but my ONLY goal has always been an A1c of below 5.0 and as of last week, it's 6.0. My most recent HOMA-IR score went from 2.27 (4 months ago) to 1.17 as of last week. I believe if my body sheds more weight, I can achieve my goal of no more metformin (chose to resume 2 months ago based on a vid by you) and bg readings in the 80's or lower.
Great video, Robert.

I was not raised having desserts except holidays or special occasions. As an adult I started treating myself more often. On keto have not had any. If I were to eat a “keto friendly” dessert that would just make me want the real thing more so it’s not on my list of edibles. Two weeks ago gave up my HS snack of 1 oz nuts-first time in almost 50 yrs. I replaced it with Sleeptime tea without sweeteners.
I’ve found it useful to put a can of tuna fish out on the counter when I’m fixing dinner. I figure NObody E-V-E-R ate tunafish for dessert! Works every time and I’ve weaned myself off of the concept of dessert.
Excellent video! You went in a completely different direction than I thought you were going! Having dessert after dinner was a hard habit for me to break, and there's still a desire there but it's more for a change of taste in my mouth than something to eat. A mint or a cup of tea with a little cream usually solves that.
My goodness I needed this if I stay up after dinner for more than 3hrs it takes the special grace of God not to put something in my mouth but I always insisted on having an early dinner and staying up because I thought it's bad to go to bed after eating dinner. And by God was I miserable now I don't have to suffer again😁😁😁😊🥰

You are forgetting the best dessert: sexual relations. Have dinner. Relax. Take a shower. Then a hour or two long sexual relation session to release stress, burn up more calories, and off to sleep like baby. Many people eat because they do not have sexual relations or because they have bad sexual relations. Or are bored with their partner. Find a great partner, enjoy life and then urgency of food is removed. Adrenaline is the best to curb hunger. Ever thought about food while on a rollercoaster? Ever thought about food while being robbed at gunpoint?
Exactly!
Ummm… one needs a partner for this… yet another stressor in life as I don’t have one.
