I absolutely LOVE your tutorials. They're incredibly informative, and you clearly show your knowledge of what it is you work with and love doing. Kudos!
awesome review. I picked up the SF about three weeks ago.. I didn't realize the master section has the innumerable possibilities ! Thanks for the tips !!! :)
Awesome, I can think of many instruments and other applications for this. It seems to be unlimited. Definitely for the Sonic Artist or the highly creative person. Go Moog!
With this, the monster will be complete! '59 Hammond B3 in a '36 A body (baby b) with removable original legs. Restored mechanically with 2 channel midi added to lower manual. Now the Slim phatty will be added along with mac mini running pianoteq and all played on the amazing restored hammond action! All of this in one "convenient" package. I cant freakin wait to get this project done!!
Most wind and breath-sounding patches typically use a noise generator, it's useful for certain ambient effects (like waves crashing on a beach, perhaps).
great review as always. Quick question - in arpeggiator mode, does it display the numeric value of the tempo? Also, is it possible to tap tempo for the arpeggiator (like it does for the LFO rate)? Thanks!
You can also link these. Meaning for a reasonable cost you can make a two-voice, four-voice .... eight-voice synthesizer. 8-voice Moog for ...say $8k ... not really that bad. Maybe Moog / Retailers will come out with a special 'bulk buy' purchase plan. Saving me pennies .... to me the Phatty line is the new Minimoog. The Voyager is closer to the IIIC series.
White noise is very useful, you use it for percussion sounds when you don't want them to have their own fundamental as well as adding a little white noise to add a bit of high end sizzle to waveforms. It sounds great in small amounts here to make the waveform buzzier, phatter or a bit vintage sounding. It's because of its frequency content.
is this synth fully sequenceable in a DAW via USB like the Minitaur, for sequencing notes and filter from a computer. Does it bring a software like the minitaur ??? great review
no white noise as an oscillator source? I m sorry I just don t get why this is important.why would I want an oscillator to look like a white noise? we usually use saw, square.. etc as oscilator source since it is very dinstinctive.. a white noise would like crush everything instantly wouldn t it? Or did you mean the is no modulation possible on the white noise? Love your reviews you re the best really. I m probably just lost here I just didn t understand what you meant.. thanks
Does the Taurus pedals provide much better bass? If it does why didn't they use the same electronics as the Taurus for the Phatty? Not everyone can play with their feet.
Some people say that the Slim Phatty cant make strong basses like the Minitaur? is this true? How are the basses in the SP? is there a huge diference in bass (low freq) between them. thanks
@MrEvanbooker You can set it to be several modes, I forget what they call them, I no longer have the unit here. But one is where you have to ravel through the programmed value to pick up any changes (which was what you saw there) there is another which just starts wherever the knob is and starts working and I think one other mode.
@sonicstate I noticed that quite a few times when switching parameters you had to turn the knob all the way back to where it was to affect a change. Is it anymore responsive now with new OS upgrades?
it depends on what are you suggesting If you want to use your guitar as sound controller(MIDI) for this moog slim phatty then yes: but you might need another gear(something like sonuus G2M,google it)to transcode your guitar into MIDI signal before further connecting into this slim phatty
I have a question though. I have 600 pounds for a synth. do you think it is better to buy a tetra or a nord lead rack (specially because they are polyphonic which is a feature I would love to see in moog products) or is it still better to you to buy a Slim Phatty because of its unique great analogu sound and filter..
Also the software costs 75 dollars, and it's a little janky. Turning knobs quickly lags out on my computer with the VST, and you have what seems like higher resolution control on the actual physical knobs. It can be nice for designing patches just, generally though, for example if you are wanting to sit down and make a small sound bank for yourself.
I'm entering a competition where I might win one of these... damn why did i check out this review? i really, really want it now. I have an extremely cheap keyboard with a midi input n output... would I be able to link this up with it?
sometimes when you use it in small amounts it can give a sound a little bit of grit. Its kind of like using a sub oscillator to beef up a sound white noise can add a little bit of a gritty sparkle to it. At least that's what i use it for. good question though
@myownservant That Arp that sells for 2k is 30 years old. A brand new one, made with the same parts, would not cost $2000. Oberheim just made a comeback... and they're selling their SEM for the same price as 30 years ago. Still using the same components. What's your opinion of the Andromeda and Prophet 08? How do they compare to the old polysynths? There are plenty of 100% analog products today, competatively priced and made by big companies and small ones.
Oh, and when I am not touring, I make a cool $60.00 an hour cash at my convenience working on hammond gear...and there is NO shortage of that work. Life is good. Its amazing when you get everything you worked so hard for...and even more amazing to see bitter hacks try and attack because they simply couldnt pull it off. Good luck to you.
I've only really needed noise sources for noise sweeps specifically, or to add some breathe to a supersaw-esque sound- which the Slim Phatty isn't going to generate anyways with two oscillators. I guess it could be useful for percussive elements, but the Phatty seems to already have that with it's melodic waves used creatively. But hey, more features would always be nice.
I know this is possibly the most stupid question ever, but I'm completely new to analog synths. Could I control this via midi? Or via CV? Or just via moog synths? Thanks so much!
When I bought my slim, I thought I was going to be using it to be sequenced through my DAW. It does that... definitely. But trust me, you want to be using this in a more live capacity. Tuning is annoying but, just like you would tune your guitar, it's not too hard to get used to tuning it a bit manually by ear.
God dammit… how many more moog demos am I gong to see where MIDI controllers are the main fucking component being used? I’m considering one if these and need to know if it works as an enhancement to a SUB 25, or any other hardware unit for that matter
ohh all right I thought you were saying 'sound source' as a sound source that would modulate a destination. like a since wave source would change the destination pitch of a sound. I thought how can a white noise be usefull to modulate a pitch for example. But you meant sound source as basically 'A Sound'. You mean that there is actually no White noise Sound available in the module. Oh yes as you say.. that is a big omission
@Ori0n1975 That Sucks man. I don't have much in the line of equipment, but I tend to get the Most out of it by working hard, & long on Experiments in Sound. You might like some of it you know. I put in an awful lot to make my music stand out, yet have much of the 60's, 70's, 80's in there mixed with Mellodrama, with emphasis on Dynamics! soundcloud com/kindle if you're interested. Do you make any Music?
...cutoff and resonance on the same pot? ouch.... I was about to go off, but just did some research after writing that first line and see the phattys have a "pot mapping" feature, enabling assignment to anything. I still think having a dedicated resonance would be WAY more handy, letting you leave the rest of the pots to their respective functions, but it'll do in a pinch I guess. Without that feature I would have immediately dismissed the phattys.
I think the first pronunciation of 'Moog' that you used is correct! Two letter Os and then a consonant are never pronounced non-phonetically, I'm sure. If it were pronounced the second way, it would be spelled 'Mogue' or Mouge' or Mowg' to rhyme with 'rogue'.
With my Moog filter....I can control the weather.
Nice review, convinced me to get a Slim Phatty a couple years ago and I've been enjoying it ever since :D
I absolutely LOVE your tutorials. They're incredibly informative, and you clearly show your knowledge of what it is you work with and love doing. Kudos!
Bob said you can pronounce it either way!
omg audio-in processing... that filter distortion is orgasmic. I'm sold on this one.
whatever dude that sounded like my laser toy guns when I was young
I say mooooooooog and I'm proud of it!
kassie2k4 i didn't think there was any other other way of saying it lol

Still sounds better than the Sub Phatty & Sub 37. Its s shame they went a tad digital with the interface, but this synth has an excellent tone to it.
Appreciate this perspective and insightful analysis, Mr. DooDoo Poop.
@@scottfernelius9590 What are you on about you childish wierdo?
Fun to see this old stuff these days. :)
Best reviewer on UA-cam... Please can you do a Sonic Retrolab too looking at some golden oldie synths too?
Most wind and breath-sounding patches typically use a noise generator, it's useful for certain ambient effects (like waves crashing on a beach, perhaps).
I Swear..THIS is the only YT synth review that rattles my windows like they could explode!
So... You can t move cutoff freq and reso amount at the same time?...
Or is there a way to do it with an external controler ?
You can do it with an external controller i'm pretty sure
Why would you need to??
great review as always. Quick question - in arpeggiator mode, does it display the numeric value of the tempo? Also, is it possible to tap tempo for the arpeggiator (like it does for the LFO rate)? Thanks!
Real great monosynths, they are so underrated. Sad most people think they are not good. I own 6 SPs they are super instruments.
why have one if you can have six? :)
is the moog slim phatty better than the arturia minibrute?
Great review as usual man!
You can also link these. Meaning for a reasonable cost you can make a two-voice, four-voice .... eight-voice synthesizer. 8-voice Moog for ...say $8k ... not really that bad. and many years later you were almost spot on with price predictions for Moog One

This guy is a great reviewer, and a great musician.
Great review, thanks for this!

I love that you have your Venom in the studio. :-D
I'm interested in this Moog -but also with the Spectralis 2 (different I know)
Have you done a review on the Spectralis 2 from Radikal Technolgies?
Thank you for this great review
Does anyone knows which sound it is in 8:40 ? Is it a preset in slim phatty?
Does the Taurus pedals provide much better bass? If it does why didn't they use the same electronics as the Taurus for the Phatty? Not everyone can play with their feet.

pablo bonnelly those are probably the ones that can’t afford a slim patty 😂
yes the value of the arp is displayed but unsure of tap tempo as i'm a new owner of this fantastic "orgasmic moon cube" cheers matt
I'm curious, in the part of the video around 4:54 where you demonstrate the filter overdrive are you using just wave sounds or a preset sound?
@MrEvanbooker You can set it to be several modes, I forget what they call them, I no longer have the unit here. Its monophonic, but I think you can chain them together if you have more than one for polyphonic playing.
Also the software costs 75 dollars, and it's a little janky. Turning knobs quickly lags out on my computer with the VST, and you have what seems like higher resolution control on the actual physical knobs. It can be nice for designing patches just, generally though, for example if you are wanting to sit down and make a small sound bank for yourself.
since it seems to be fairly digital, can you change the control voltages, to make it euro compatible?
man i don't think i could do all the menus and hidden features. i love the sound but this video confused me more than it made me want one
honestly thats the way a lot of moogs go. i am loving my subsequent but after afew months im still learning new hidden functions from the manual.
Very good review!
amazing sound!!
nice video, indeed! and what synthesizer do you use while playing keyboard??
thank you ! great review !!!!!

Paphun Dekel Slim phatty is much better.
Last Call!
Better get one before they're all GONE!
+Matthew Paluch One year later and they are still available ; )
And another year gone by, several on Ebay and I'm gonna grab one.
Moog Slim Phatty vs ??? which would you choose for a rack of similar price?
Your Demos are always the best. Thanks. I also cant get out of the habit of pronouncing moog wrong :-)
Fantastic says it all.
@jiberies It can be very interesting. Why less Sounds, if u could have something "unusual" to experiment with ?
Why haven't you reviewed the Moog Little Phatty Stage II?! PLEASE DO!!!

Def one of the best on the web
Oh, I heard the bottom end. And felt it. Gotta love Fisher Studio Standard! Made my dog bark.

How did you get that sound at 9:14?! it sounds AMAZING!
Josh Wilson i think that´s an external synth/e-piano sound processed with slim phatty´s filter plus overload
ohhhhhhh! so he just plugged it in to the slim phatty through the input or something?
He's using an M Audio Venom
I know this is possibly the most stupid question ever, but I'm completely new to analog synths. Could I control this via midi? Or via CV? Or just via moog synths? Thanks so much!
Awesome review. Want one :)
Phat! Like the music you're making.
do you need a external sound card if you want to make sounds with Logic Pro 9 ?
*make patches in logic pro i meant...like can u just use usb and ur good to go ?
You can just get something like a focusrite scarlett 2i4, they're pretty cheap (2i4's are better than 2i2 because they have the MIDI I/O ports)
i got my self RME Baby Face ! :)
What do use to control it? Do you have to have an actual keyboard or can I just use a MIDI or USB keyboard?

Apples and Oranges. Love my Brute!!!!
how does this compare with the dave smith mopho
I wonder if Norman Cook bought one of these ??
This synth sounds extremely close to the Korg MS-20, maybe its just me
It has an arp??? I am sold.
you can easily design analogish hihat and percussion sounds with a noise osc.
@KilianColin yes, look it up in the manual on page 58.
@jiberies White noise is a very useful sound source. Just seems like quite an omission to me.
@sonicstate Sorry. Is there filter tracking?
Is it compatible with doepfer dark time sequencer ?
i say moog too because they are so damn smooooooth :D
This will probably not break anytime soon. It's professional-grade gear, and it's pretty much made to stand up to any damage it gets on tour.
ohh all right I thought you were saying 'sound source' as a sound source that would modulate a destination. like a since wave source would change the destination pitch of a sound. I thought how can a white noise be usefull to modulate a pitch for example.

The Force.
torn between picking up a Moog or going with an A4
Just send white noise in via the audio input :)
Great Review!!! :)

Is the filter 24db? And not switchable to 12db?
If you got it on your desk all the time.... no, moog is quality 10/10!
you need a keyboard and and MIDI cable, MIDI output from keyboard goes into MIDI input on the Synth it self :) hope I could help :)
Nick must really like his Venom :P
@humblelaurie £699, its monophonic

I could buy an novation supernova. mount and a dsi tetr4.
But it looks so awesome.
I think its the M-Audio Venom!
Just ordered a lancet I stead!
