The watches seem to be pretty good at everything but elevation. The Running Channel has done some good tests and they've found the VO2 Max and HR functions to be very accurate. And honestly my own Garmin's race predictions aren't too far off my actual PR's.
The running power metric is not standardized, so any manufacturer can just use their scale. What matters is that when you plot the running power throughout the race, the graph trends align between manufacturers, even if the values are in different scales.
Congrats on the Boston performance! The data comparison is a great insight of what the little differences are between the four. That elevation gain on the Apple Ultra is insane 😂
The battery is the most tempting thing about the pace for me. I used to have to charge my old vivoactive 3 like every 3 days and need to be basically full charge before a marathon. I have the forerunner 255 now it’s so much nicer not having to worry about making sure it’s charged enough all the time to make it through the next run. I charged it on Thursday before I flew to Boston Friday. Didn’t even bring the charger, kept it on all weekend used it for a few group shakeouts, did the marathon, flew home Tuesday, still had like 25% left.
Very cool data! I did wonder why you were wearing all those watches! I wasn’t going to “watch( no pun intended) but I’m glad I did! Congrats on a very impressive run!
The Coros Pace 2 is suuuuuch a good fitness watch for $200. Simple function, advanced stats, and nobody can touch its battery life. I've been running in one for a few months and I'm sold.
For $200 the Pace 2 gives you a lot of bang for your buck, but I have to disagree about battery life. The Coros Pace 2 gives you 30 hours of normal GPS. The non-solar version of the Forerunner 955 will give you 40 hours of normal GPS. And if you go for the solar version it can be even more. (Assuming all other systems are of, like music streaming etc.)
Interesting comparison! Note that Garmin HRM also privides the extra data about ground contact time, stride length, etc. If your Garmin watch was connected to the HRM you could see this data on Garmin as well. Not sure why Coros which was connected to the HRM didn't have it though.
Yes so it's a shame that he doubled up on Apples instead of garmin FRs. Plus I thought that the 955 had SOME dynamics? Hell my samsung watch has decently detailed running analytics (like Apple, I guess). Still, as a data nerd, I really ❤ this video. 🔥
Thank you for sharing, I found this very interesting. Hope you continue this series of sharing your watch data after each major race. Look forward to up coming content on 100milers Keep the great content 😊
I did a 9h walk on Saturdayand tracked it on my Forerunner 955 on UltraTrac mode, today is Tuesday evening… without charging I still have 74% battery left 💪🏽 Insane battery life on the 955
I did a marathon with a garmin vivoactive 4 and it added 1.5 km to my run. Not sure if I was maybe taking wide corners or what, but seems like a big difference
Race courses are measured using perfect tangents. You are zig zagging slightly while running and will always run more than 26.2 in a marathon. As you see all the watches have very similar distances. You did mention this. Just adding more info. Garmin and Coros calculate running power very differently. You can’t compare the numbers. Also, Garmin also provides Vertical oscillation, ground contact time, and other advanced metrics. Last thing, if you change Stave to “Race” it takes account for total time and actual pace. No adjustments Let’s get it!!
You got the hrm pro. Connect it to your garmin and you'll get vertical oscillation, left/right balance, ground contact time, etc. Not just apple watch!
how did you make sure the watches don't slide down your arm into the other watch? esp as you get sweaty? even if they're tight, they always slide down my arm from all the movement
Great video. Congrats with the run. Maybe check the precision of the Apple Watch Ultra without a strap to compare with the others. If the Garmin is that close to the band, it could be an interesting experiment. Seems like the 3 top watches are very close in this test, so I guess it comes down to preference (in pulse and distances), but I don't know anything about the fitness numbers at the end of each table.
I ran a fall marathon with 3 watches using multi band gps and my Stryd (non wind). Garmin 955 Solar on Multi Band GPS, Coros Pace 2+Stryd and The AW series LTE. Stryd was the best with my Coros Pace 2 was the best. I recently in Boston 2023, I ran with just 1 watch --Garmin 955+the new Stryd next Gen was nearly perfect. I also did extensive testing for weeks. Stryd next Gen is by far the most consistent and reliable.
I’m pretty sure the HRM pro is what takes over for like vertical oscillation, ground contact time, and even cadence. And if it was connected to three watches that’s why it was all similar. But still garmin rules. The best hands down. Still not sure how I feel about coros for now
Garmin calculates running power totally different than Coros / Stryd. Can’t compare the numbers. Unlike power on the bike, running power is still very new and no standard has been established.
congratulations. my garmin did ground contact time and stride length per foot. I liked how long the battery lasted but i think the forerunner 935 i had was not correct on calorie burn.
Race distance is measured 1 metre from the left curb. The painted line is the quickest route. Also, Certified marathon events have to add .5% distance as buffer. Don't quote me on this
Hey Hellah, nice video here! Just some suggestions. If you want more datas, why not try these several gadgets: 1. Garmin Running Dynamics Pod (wear it behind your waist) 2. Coros Pod 2 (wear it on your foot) or, some audible here, you can go for Stryd footpod 3. Oura Ring Gen 3 I believe these items would greatly help you with several datas they can provide to you & help you on your running. Have a good day!
Great video, Hella!! Congratulations for nailing it at Boston. l'd like to see you test the Huawei GT Runner, it's very underrated and probably one if the best running watches in terms of quality and price.
I ran with the same Apple Watch Series 7 for Houston marathon and it died at mile 20 😢. I switched over to coros pace 2 and I’m so happy I did it. I don’t think any watch is competing with coros especially at the friendly $200 dollars for a watch that does so much!!! They also have training programs to help you with marathon training and automatically sync to the watch and the app is so easy to operate
Since the watches were connected to the Garmin Chest HRM and the running dynamics such as cadence, stride length, vertical ratio/oscillation, etc… came from it, I’d think that the winner would be Garmin; both with the HRM or without which was pretty accurate. I’d guess that the battery on your 955 solar is also superior to the other watches which makes it a top contender for data accuracy and dependability during long events.
@@highseastrader4190 I wasn’t aware of that, thanks for pointing that out. In this case, why would he have the 3 watches connected to the strap if it’s not being fed the running dynamics?
The pace2 is also really cheap, as these things go at least. So definitely a good pick. Cheap enough that you can get an HR strap for better accuracy (the wrist hr on that is not great) and still have change compared to most other watches.
Funny and weird the difference regarding elevation from the Watch Ultra. I dont have an explanation about it. Nonetheless, the Watch Ultra is my favorite as it is the best Swiss Knife kind of watch… Very interesting comparison. As @Shervin shared asked how do you manage for the watches not to slide now while running????
I tested coros apex 2 pro vs garmin fr 955 for two runs ( 17km and 31km). During the final 1/3 distance, HR from apex 2 pro significantly raise from around 155 bpm to 190bpm, while HR from fr 955 seems stable. Wondering if you had met the same issue before.
Do listen to music with your Apple ultra watch while you run marathons? I ran a half marathon using my Apple series 8 with Strava, Apple workout, my accountability monitoring my run while listening to music and my watch dies as soon as I finished my race. I’m thinking about upgrading to the Apple Watch ultra for an upcoming marathon.
for me the garmin data make sense. 0 anae because the run was too long for anaerobic improvement, where usually Z4 and specially Z5 are counting. And that much power? Garmin should update it to look more like others. Instead there is no one like exactly measurement.
What's the point of connecting all except one to the chest HRM? Would have been better to compare wrist heart rates too I would have thought. Also Garmin definitely has the vertical oscillation and stride length too 👍🏼
I know sorry out of habit I connect them all but had been keeping one disconnected for a comparison and didn’t actually plan to make this video otherwise I would’ve had only one connect to hrm! Next one I got u. Comparing like 10 watches in the next video
with that first time.., I was like …, “you did hit Sub 3…”, then you said it died. Once apple ups the battery game, at all levels.., they are coming for everyone. no gps watch is safe
Sorry Christopher! I wish I was thinking straight but right after the race I went back to nap and didn’t even think of checking batteries. Next experiment I will! I wasn’t actually planning this video before the race but I wish I was haha
My Apple Watch 6 can track 8+ hours (GPS and HR). Airplane mode (make sure to disable wifi and Bluetooth). Disable Display auto wake. Put on mute. HR is as accurate as tracked using a chest strap HRM as I've done side by side comparison.
When I go a easy run that is my current 5k pb is 18:57 so my easy pace is around 5:20 to 5:40 so when I do the easy runs in these paces then my Garmin says the heart rate above aerobic zone,so is it good or Garmin say wrong?
What is less accurate? 🤔 It just beeps on the starting line and the finish line. And there is 26,2 miles between them. Don't see any accuracy-related concern here.
I'm kinda blown away by your average HR. What is your maxmimum HR? My own experience and everything I've read say that if you run too hard (with % of maximum HR being THE indicator of how hard you're running) for too long, you'll hit the wall. It blows me away that anybody can hold an average HR of 167 for 3+ hours without bonking! Your results obviously speak for themselves -- I'm just curious about how that's possible.
Had a Apple Watch and Garmins. Marathon you pushing it with apple. Just get the Garmin. It lasts longer. 12 hour ultra marathon. Easy. 8 hour half iron man. No problem.
The Garmin being 1 beat off of the HR strap for both average and max HR is insane for a wristwatch
They do really well at stable HR, but as soon as you do intervals with ups and downs, all bets are off lol
The watches seem to be pretty good at everything but elevation. The Running Channel has done some good tests and they've found the VO2 Max and HR functions to be very accurate. And honestly my own Garmin's race predictions aren't too far off my actual PR's.
