The castle was built near the place where, in July 1541, along with 30 men and their priest, Spanish conquistador, Francisco Vásquez de Coronado gave up his search for the "seven cities of gold" and returned his expedition to Mexico. His expedition started with 300 Spaniards and more than 1,000 Native Americans, along with many horses, pigs, ships and cattle. The main thrust of the expedition departed in February 1540 from Compostela, the capital of Nueva Galicia. A Native American Pawnee village excavation site is located a few miles southwest of the hill. The site was occupied from circa 1500 to 1800, and many small artifacts have been discovered. In 1932, roads and a stone shelter "resembling a castle" were built on top of the hill as a project of the Works Progress Administration and completed in 1936. The site was primarily constructed for picnics and for patrons to enjoy the vast vistas (it sits 300 feet above the surrounding valley floor). The 16 acre park is contiguous with a large native prairie pasture extending to the north and northwest. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 10/20/2010, and remodeled in 2016.
Thanks Greg!! Saved me from having to look it up. Kudos!!
👍
Indeed, thanks!
Wow! This brings back memories from about 55 years ago when I was a little kid living in Windom, KS. We went on a school field trip/picnic to Coronado Heights. I saw things in your video I hadn't thought of since then. Thanks for the memories!
Thank you for showing us this. Nice break from the "normal" stuff.
Loved this video. I learned something new today. Never knew there was a "castle" in Nebraska. Very cool. The drone video is great too. Sense of place and a nice deviation from the car crushing. Do more when you have time.
Truly "an adventure" with "Adventures Made From Scratch"! Silas is so down to earth. Genuine, hard-working man! And he takes us with him for this journey. So cool! Thank you for taking the time to share your brief segments of your life with us! You are so gracious and kind. Real people you are!
Thank you!
What a great way to see a part of our country that we may never be able to do on our own! Thanks for the video and keep them coming for us to enjoy 😊
My wife and her brother grew up in Lindsborg. She says they spent more time on Coronado Heights than they did at home. We live in McPherson now and go to the hill quite often. It's kind of a hidden gem.
Great video. Went to Coronado Heights on a field trip when I was in about the 7 th grade and we learned all about it in school. It’s a Awesome place to take the kids and teach them about a little something in Kansas . Just love watching your videos and you taking us all on your adventures. Thank you for all the time you give all of us and sharing.
What a great adventure, keep it up silas you are doing a great job. Keep the adventures comeing.
"There's no place like home, there's no place like home, there's no place like home!" 🐕 ♥️
Fantastic! great video Silas. The aerial shots along with the music was super professional like national geographic. You are getting so good. Cheers again from Canada
Kansas has lots of neat stuff, Garden of Eden, Largest hand dug well, big rail gun, largest ball of string.
Don't forget mushroom rock park.
I'd recommend Castle Rock and The Kansas Tall Grass Prairie Preserve as well. Many sites to see in the rural landscape.
Great video Silas.hope you make some more of these adventures.I liked the medieval music on the drone footage 😊
Really cool adventure, what an awesome spot. Thanks for sharing. 👍
So different from scrapping! What an amazing thing to discover in the middle of mundane nowhere Nebraska. More like this, please👍👍👌
Great music selection !! really fits & makes the mood.... & makes the video all that more enjoyable.... I love the exploration videos, mushroom hunting etc.... breaks up the routine nicely... we look forward to your videos each week, thanks for taking the time to share your life with us... ☺️👍🥇
Thank you!
What a great day for an adventure thank you for taking us
The castle reminds me of the numerous "ghost cities" in China. Thank you. Much appreciated.
What Was the WPA? President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the Works Progress Administration with an executive order on May 6, 1935. It was part of his New Deal plan to lift the country out of the Great Depression by reforming the financial system and restoring the economy to pre-Depression levels. Building all kinds of things for public use.
You travel like I do, I do not care how long the trip takes. It's the journey, not the destination. I like your channel, I'll be watching.
Cool stuff is everywhere. Thanks for taking us along.
Silas it was built in 1932 by the work progress adminastration its alleged to be near where Fransico Vasques de Coronado gave up his search for the 7 cities of gold and then turned around and went back to Mexico awesome video great content have a great day
Right, WPA, as seen on one of the signs.
This by far was the best adventure you have filmed!
Awesome landscape. Thats the Kansas we read about. Breathtaking plains out there!
There was an Intercontinental Seaway which formed during the Cretaceous. The sandstone is most likely made of beach or bottom of shallow ocean. About half of Kansas was covered by this Seaway. The Western part. Pretty cool.
This particular layer of sandstone is called the Dakota Sandstone.
Another fine fieldtrip Silas!
Nice drone views too.
That would be a beautiful place to have a picnic with the family on a nice fall day. 👍👍👍
The music was perfect and so was the view you nailed it 👌
Wonderful video. Interesting place to take a break and explore.
Really Awesome Silas !! And the video from that drone is exceptional.
Thanks Silas, that was wonderful. Never knew about this. My sister lived most of her adult life in KS in the NW, E, and West Central. I visited her at each town and found fascinating history and land forms.
What a cool place. Would be a great place for a small wedding or family reunion. Loved the background music. How much we miss in life by not slowing down and taking the back roads and by ways. Loved seeing all the open country. That is getting less and less as time goes on. Glad you found this treasure, thanks for bringing us along. Do some research on WPA, and CCC. They built a lot of cool stuff during the depression. Great video! Stay safe and GOD bless
There have been weddings up there. Some people have made mini movies, knights and maidens kind of stuff. Whenever family comes to visit me I take them up there. That bathroom does smell horrible even for a bathroom. I took my mother up there, she loved it. I took my grandson up there. . .that is another story!
I thought that I had found most of the local attractions during the nine years that I lived in Osborne County Kansas, but at less than two hours away, this was the first time that I had heard of Coronado Heights.
Looks like a great place to fly kites!
There are outhouses that even lime won't help!
What a View!!!!. I just now seeing this on a computer screen can not do it justice. Time to add to my bucket list.
Love when you mix differn't adventures in you videos.
The junkyard videos are mine and everyone else's favorite, but I really hope to start making a little bit of this type of content to throw in with the mix.
Great video Silas. Definitely a great adventure. Greetings from Edmonton, Alberta.
"FANTASTIC " This is just what I needed today. I have been wanting to go somewhere but I can't. You made my day with this. Thank you and God Bless
👍👌👏 Oh WOW, simply fantastic! Definitely a great video, congrats! What a stunning place and view. And what a great idea to build a bunch of picnic areas even with fire places. I really hope that you will find the time to spend some time with your family there.
Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health to all of you.
Sure enough, you found an adventure - FUN !
Very interesting. Magic views.
Thank you for taking us on this adventure. It was really neat.
Thats a m60 tank 60 ton of armor!!!!

They were starting to phase them out wit the Bradley when I got out of the army !!!! That was a neat adventure !!!!😊😊😊😊😊👍👍👍🌎🌞🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
Wow how facinating is that a castle in Kansas i had no idea! Great video!
This was really a cool place and the things you showed is great
Thanks for the adventure. Might have to wander over that way some weekend. Peace
BRAVO! This is a great break from your usual content, not that I dislike that. Thanks.
That castle would make some man a nice home!
It appears that the WPA turned Coronado Heights into a picnic area for the locals and as a sightseeing destination to attract tourists. That castle or Keep because of it's small size was a nice touch. I really enjoyed the drone footage, especially seeing the overhead perspective of how big the heights actually were. Thanks so much, Silas.
It was built during the great depression during the time same time as the tennsese valley authority was and other programs were being created by Roosevelt to put young people to work
This was built by the WPA, a program established by FDR to employment during the depression. It was simply meant to be a picnic area for families in the area to enjoy. Lindsborg is just south east of Coronado Heights. Lindsborg is known as Little Sweden because of its strong Swedish roots. It is also home to Bethany College, where I attended. There were not banquets in the castle, but there were parties for sure. My initials are in those sandstones in a few places. Great place to enjoy sunrises and sunsets!
thank you for this great adventure it was so nice to see the shots from your camera and the drone ,thank you for shareing agin god bless
Thanks Silas, for the great random adventure! Nice work on the filming, If you keep this up that cameraman will be out of a job!!
Def gives you an Ireland feel with the drone footage!
Been there many many times throughout my life. My father grew up in Lindsborg ks. Less than a mile away.
At the Bendix airport in South bend Indiana there is quite a few military vehicles and also missiles made by Bendix. And a nice little museum in front of the airport that's what reminds me of your video. That's where I live not at the airport but in the town or close by
I live 45 minutes from Coronado Heights and I have been there many times and we have been on the trails, it is a beautiful place and Lindsborg is a neat little town which is just down the road from Coronado Heights.
@Channel Lady, I think we're neighbors. Tony's Pizza? Kansas Wesleyan? Cozy's?
@@kansaskachina I am in a beautiful little town 5 miles northwest of Newton.
@@channellady9905 I worked in Newton for about 8 years. Drove from Salina every day. I always thought the drive was beautiful. Passed Coronado Heights everyday.
@@kansaskachina That is quite a drive and yes that drive is beautiful. There are parts of Kansas that are hilly and there are parts that are flat. I love the flint hills.
@@kansaskachina My favorite zoo is the Rolling Hills Zoo in Salina.
Thanks for bringing us along,Thumbs up

Silas that’s Awesome Video Thanks for Sharing
1936. Probably a WPA funded project. There are a lot of interesting WPA projects all over the US.
Yes it was.
Pretty cool castle the video was pretty cool too
In Wichita in the college hill area there is a castle that a friend of mine helped build.
Nice. I hope you found some more cool stuff on your trip
Love it when you do these type of vids.

There's a lot to see out there once you get off the interstate. Glad you had a little time away from crushing and people no-showing you. 😎

I love your videos but this one is, by far, the best one so far. I hope you mske more of these.
This is an amazing video Silas, good job!!
That's like when I came into Kansas on old two lane hyway from Oklahoma. On a hill by Harland Kansas is a small statue of liberty
Loved the vid as always especially with the “castle” buuuuuuut We have castles that thing is no bigger than my garden shed, hopefully you get to the chance to come visit Scotland and our plentiful castles 🏰
I love castles, but this is only the 2nd one I’ve ever seen. I’ve also been to Bishop’s Castle in Colorado. That place is super sketchy though.
@@AdventuresMadeFromScratch old castles are amazing to visit, in my area Were I live in Scotland we have 78 castles, stay safe in them old buildings they can be sketchy under foot
My husband and I was there last Friday, it really was awesome.
So the castle was a WPA project built during the 1930's.
Love videos like this, very cool!
I truly want to thank you for this video it was definitely a venture and I enjoyed myself
Perfect!
Coronado Heights is a hill northwest of Lindsborg, Kansas, United States. It is alleged to be near the place where Francisco Vásquez de Coronado gave up his search for the seven cities of gold and turned around to return to Mexico. Coronado Heights is one of a chain of seven sandstone bluffs in the Dakota Formation and rises approximately 300 feet.
MY GUESS IT WAS BUILT AS A WPA PROJECT BACK IN THE DEPRESSION DAYS IN THE 1930s!
A LOT OF LAKES AND PARKS WERE BUILT IN THOSE DAYS!!
👍👍😎😎
I live just a short drive north of Coronado Heights, in Salina, KS.😎
Over the years, I have driven through Minot.
And I used to deliver to Franklin, driving past the plane/thanks, but I was always on a schedule. So never got to stop and look.
Thanks for sharing!😎
this is a cool video Silas.
During my time in the Air Force I got on every flight I could. Being aircraft maintenance (machinist, 42770 for you fellow blue suits) I had more opportunity to see the aircraft fly than be on them.
It helped to have friends that were air crew and could get you on a flight. More often than not it was going around in circles practicing takeoff and landing. But if they were going to go somewhere they could wangle you a ride. Mostly day trips but sometimes you had to take a day off.
Anyhow....
Up at 32000 feet things just aren't very clear. I always carried binoculars so I could watch other aircraft but if the pod for refueling other aircraft wasn't occupied I would lay in the "seat" that looked out the back and straight down out of the aircraft. With my trusty binoculars I would scan the ground looking at miles of prairie, towns and yes a frigging castle out where one should not be. I went up front and pestered the crew(I tried to do that as little as possible) as to what our location was. As soon as I could get to the base library (way before computers) and do some research.
Yep, it was built by the WPA.
I always wanted to go check it out and until now had no idea it was on such a hill.
Thank you Silas that was something I had forgotten all about. Gee it was only the mid 80s give me some slack. LOL!
Wow! That's cool!
Cheers
Terry
The sign with date said WPA work projects America or what my grandfather said was we poke around was government work project of the 30s. Pretty cool
That was so interesting. That Kansas is beautiful. With all the metal you got, make a suit of armour. Hang it on the yard gate.
Great video lovely drone shots and footage, came across great the music in the back ground could of been in Scotland around some old castle, braveheart. 👍
Coronado Heights is one of the few heights in Kansas at Elevation. 1526 ft. (465 m.) I know people like to say Kansas is flat, but there are several heights taller than Coronado Heights and lower than Mount Sunflower.
awesome video thanks for sharing
I love the castle 🏰
Love the drone video and great music. Always enjoy the variety of videos you post. Seems like all the new subscribers do too.
