The reason you hear Tarja's double voice is because, as you said, it was a surprise and the recording of Tarja's voice remained in the background. tarja sings above that recording. When you sing "alone" in a show a "duo song", the other voice has to be recorded because otherwise the part of the person who is not on stage would not come out and that part would be "empty". so this is a real surprise. Tarja always sings live.

'Paradise - What About Us' is a Within Temptation song written with a duet with Tarja from the outset and therefore she appears in the MV. They performed it live first at Hellfest2016 (I was there) with the knowledge that Tarja would join them on stage. At this 2019 performance Sharon did not know that Tarja would be there and hence the backing track was active.

Thanks for the reaction. Paradise was a song that was already created with the idea of inviting Tarja, so this song was created in collaboration with her. Sharon den Adel did not know Tarja personally at that time, but they knew about each other. They are friends after Paradise. This year both Tarja and Within Tempation had their concerts back to back at Master of the Rock together. Everyone expected Tarja to join Sharon for the song again, but she had to excuse herself because she was in pain all day and wanted to focus on her concert, which was amazing.

Yes, Sharon was surprised that Tarja came out to sing this with her. She didn’t know😁
But because this was a suprise, you can still hear prerecorded vocals on the background of her live vocals.
I like this performance, it's so fun!
There is a better live video from Hellfest 2016. It's so good! That one was not surprise, so it doesn't have those backing tracks for Tarja's vocals.

Sharon did expect Tarja to come out from the left side of the podium, but instead she was already behind her. You can clearly see Sharon turn to her left expecting Tarja over there, to be also clearly surprised to see her beheind her. The backing vocals are always there.

There is backing vocals. Tarja is trying to sing over it. If you look at the screen behind them, they had video of Tarja singing her parts.
