the combination of being a deep-lying "regista", moving all around the pitch, basically orchestrating the attack, and on top of that being technically fantastic, able to dribble through opponents easily, AND a prolific goalscorer... this combination of traits, at this level of skill, is pretty much unheard of as far as I know. an icon from a time when football was not so specialized as it is now... you don't have a defined role, you just do everything you can to make your team win! and the impact he had on Real Madrid speaks for itself... i put him 4th behind Maradona, Pele & Cruyff. a legend.
This is mind-blowing to watch. To have such a deft touch & close ball control & sharp change of directions while dribbling to leave defenders stranded on basically, a water mud hole of a pitch, coupled with the heavy medicine like ball they played with & heavy boots used back then, is extraordinary. Imagine Di Stefano playing on today's billiard ball pitches. He'd be even more unplayable.
@@McFlashh His ball control would look more fluid today. Billard ball pitches, football's that move quicker aerodynamically when touched. Lighter football boots for greater feel & ball control. Watch a Cristiano Ronaldo video circa 2007 to 2013. And you'll see how quickly & smoothly the ball moves across the billiard ball pitches, with no lumps & bumps, when he's running with it. That means, the player can pick up pace at faster knot speeds.
Brilliant performance by Alfredo Di Stefano, of all the match compilations of him this is perhaps his finest. He was such an attacking threat and orchestrated many moves with his deft dribbles and intelligent movement.

The heavy water absorbent ball, the surface water and the relentless pace inside which only the best ever buying time. This was real football. What could Messi or Ronaldo do here?
You also underestimate Messi and Ronaldo much the same way the "playstation generation" underestimate these genius players. As either Wenger or Ferguson rightly said, the best players will adopt to any generation they find themselves in.
Messi played an outscored his pairs on pure dirt and holed up pitches when he was a child. Great players adapt to whatever they have in front of them. It'll be the same to say that Di Stéfano wouldn't be able to develop the physique and speed today players have. He could if he had to.
