    i remember commenting on this video 3 years ago. I was a sophomore in high school going into my jr year. By then I was ranked top 10 in my state class. I will definitely fast forward this video to anyone who wants to run on the colligate level. It is not easy at all and very mentally challenging. My freshman year of college, I was ineligible to compete and practice. Second year covid hit (2020). The next semester I wanted to transfer schools in which I did. Coaches will lie, cheat and steal from you. If I have any advice to give. PLEASE VISIT the school first and check the school's environment. Went to a D2 Christian University. It was by far the worst experience. Luckly, I wanted to transfer after a year and a half there. I know I wanted to go D1 and landed here in the NEC conference. got very lucky!

      It’s definitely an unfortunate reality that a lot of coaches are not good at their job or are not great people. I transferred from Arizona after my coach stopped showing up to my practices and he tried to talk shit about me to every coach how I am “cancer for the team”... A year later he got arrested for sexually abusing and threatening to kill one of his athletes. I got lucky and went with my gut feeling that Martin at UVA was a good guy and it was one of the best decisions of my life. Glad you were dedicated enough to make the move, a bad environment and/or coach crushes a lot of athletes even more impressive with covid going on. Best of luck man keep grinding

      @@LifeofJY the track and field community Is very small. And the part where you said coaches talk shit is 100% true and happening after a student wants to transfer. My sprints coach lied about me to several of the school coaches that reached out. And you know, asked about me. I wasn't the only one in my class to transfer out that semester either. My whole class either transferred out or dropped out of college. And if they transferred out it was difficult. As the same for me because of toxic coaches thinking they really know what a student athlete is about. Those who did transfer are D1 athletes now including me. While I tended not to really care about division. I just went somewhere I know i will fit in and love. I hope athletes know that not every coach is the right coach. Some can be very bad for you and other vice versa.

    What types of grades and scores are good for getting a scholarship in track? I live in Northern Virginia and uva has always been a thought for the future because it is in-state, but seeing the gpa and sat requirements it’s really kind of intimidating. So typically what is the average gpa for a student athlete that’s on track?

    • @LifeofJY
      @LifeofJY  6 років тому +2

      Hey, sorry for the delayed response I've been quite busy. Honestly your grades can be slightly scaled with your athleticism for a lot of schools. I always made sure to keep a 3.0+ for high school and that allowed me to go to most schools not having to worry too much about my sat scores. An academic school like UVA is a bit more difficult to get into as a freshman. Without transferring from the university of Arizona I probably would have not gotten into UVA straight out of high school. Anyway to answer your question 3.0+ with decent sat scores will allow you to go to a lot of places if you can score points for a school. If you don't see yourself scoring many points your grades will need to be right about on what the school recommends when applying.

    • @vivadrags
      @vivadrags 5 років тому

      In my opinion it'd be a big stretch but not saying impossible. Athletes even during state meets will run sub 4:30 for the mile and can run sub 4:10. For 5000m I'm not to sure about but state meet you'll see people running sub 17:00 and top high schoolers can run sub 15:00.
      Working hard and some good luck will go a long way. A 5:30 mile and 18:00 5K is definitely in your range in 9th or 10th grade
      Edit: Just saw you're a female athlete and top high school athletes usually run sub 4:50 mile and and sub 17:00 for the 5K. And by senior year, who knows

      a lot of schools will take walk ons if coaches see enough potential in an athlete. the biggest concern is event group size at a school. if the group you want to enter is already big enough that it is overwhelming the coach, they may up their criteria for you to walk on.

      Kimberly McCoy if your times are top in the nation or world, coaches will notice you where ever you’re from. But just being the best on your team doesn’t necessarily mean anything to a coach. In the video I discuss some ways you can look it up and other tips to get a full scholarship. Look at the conference championships for the school you want to go to and and if you can get your time down to top 8 you have a chance to get some money. Then if you do different events like 200m,400m,and learn hurdles you can be more valuable to the team you want to go to and get more scholarship

    From the start of me doing track I realized that I wasn't the best at anything, but I was pretty good at almost everything, so I'm planning on doing the decathlon once I get to college. If I plan to get a scholarship for the decathlon, how would I go about that if I can't actually participate in a decathlon until college?

    • @bryanryder7196
      @bryanryder7196 6 років тому +2

      The key for that if you want to be a decathlete is you basically need to just try and do different events at every meet you can. Like for example one meet you run 400 hurdles, 100, and Javelin and then the next meet you run the 400, long jump, and high jump. Basically you need to get marks in a variety of different events and you need to see okay well if I run 50 flat for 400 how does that stack up to Decathletes in college. Getting marks in every event is important for the coaches to see, because they'll be able to tell looking at your times across different events and see whether or not you'd be a good decathlete or would be better suited for focusing on just one specific event group. Talk to your high school coaches too so you can kind of go over a game plan of what you'd like to run at different meets. Hope this helps

These times aren’t bad but aren’t the best. I still have time to sharpen my time but my question was, what other events can I do to look more worthy to coaches ?

    • @gatbeatbox8656

      It depends, I’m d1 rn and let me say the standards for running in college, especially walking on is way lower then this video says. There’s others favor too like how fast you improve. If you’re fast let’s say a 10.9 second 100 freshman year of hs and you don’t or barely improve at all throughout your whole career. (This happens to majority of people) you’ll be over looked by someone who was very slow at the start of hs but was very fast by the end cause they have longevity. Which is arguably the most important factor when earning a scholarship

    Do you consider this D1 material? Shes in 8th grade.
    Shes won 1st place district 2 yrs in a roll. Last yr she went 1st place undefeated for every mile and a half event at every track meet. Just need a few pointers .......

      Abel Arguijo I’m a thrower so I have no idea honestly. All I know is she would smoke me if we raced. In the video and description I have a chart showing what it takes in each event to get full and partial scholarships. So I imagine if she’s on track to hit those times then she will be d1 material.

      Depends, majority of athletes start out fast freshman year but barely improve. In the long run if your like most then you’ll be beat out by the athletes who were very slow but became very fast, because those are the guys who have longevity and know what it’s like to by rock bottom so they’re hungry. They’re the guys who will go pro and beat you out of scholarships. So just hope that you’re one of those 1 in a millions that fly down the ranks with the same training as everyone else.

    If I wanna go to USC for track should I say I’m considering UCLA, TA&M and like Auburn?

    • @LifeofJY
      @LifeofJY  5 років тому

      Claro Mepa I’d say there is a few other approaches to take before perusing that route but if you know you are a legitimate contender for points and can be an asset to their team and it would hurt them without you then that could be a good approach to take if that’s the program you know you want to go to.

      Life of JY Thank you for replying and for your input. If I’m an international student is there anything different I have to do? Also I’m from Canada and have to take PATs, can I submit PATs instead or SATs or ACTs?

    • @LifeofJY
      @LifeofJY  5 років тому

      Claro Mepa I’d say as an international student it’s a bit more difficult to be seen by American schools unless your Times/distances are phenomenal because not as many coaches go to International meets so just use the tips from the video and reach out to schools. Also you have to find a location to take your SATs and there is fewer places and times to take them in Canada so you just need to look into that and schedule it. Also make sure you are taking the right courses in highschool to get you into American college

      Put your name out there. I was a 45-120 guy in high school, which is decent but wouldn’t be anywhere near enough to get immediate recognition. However, I got in touch with the coaches at the schools I was looking at and ended up getting 6 offers my senior year. Granted they were all D3 but still.
