This episode revealed something about Marco which I really liked. He loves to give speeches, he loves to fight and be the 'hero' but when it comes to actual statesmanship and the reality of building a nation he isn't interested. Its a good way of showing his real underlying reasons for his actions. His priority is his own ego, not helping Belters.
Exactly - he’s like Robert Baratheon, but shittier
Right I got anti-mandela vibes in this. As in Mandela ended apartheid, but was self aware enough to know he didn't know how to run a country so he bowed out after one term.
@@garethking5322 a very rare character trait indeed
Basically Trump
@@hellfish2309 at least Robert Baratheon kinda choose good people to run the country for him at first.
In Naomi's mind, she tried to save her son, couldn't do it, and ended up killing Alex in the process.
the guy in the airlock too
While I'm frustrated at Naomi holding resentment towards Peaches, in her defense, it wasn't just Holden she tried to kill. She had Naomi pinned down and was about to crush her neck when Anna saved the day. Holden was gone, Alex and Amos were in the medbay. That moment of extreme homicidal intent was just between the two of them, and that might be a little hard to shake.
works actually better than in the book where only Holden seems to hold a grudge on Clarissa .. when in the show it was Naomi who got fully assaulted beaten and nearly decapitated by her.. Holden didnt even saw her until they were both locked up in the Behemot and then he doesnt see her again until she saves the whole day for humanity.. so Naomi being the one to hold a grudge makes more sense...
Also is a nice avertion.. Naomi is not a perfect character..she is smart and a badass in enginering but she makes mistakes and can be an asshole too often... Book Naomi is much more mild
@@sparrowlt the issue is that so far: 60% of the story revolves around Naomi. That’s cool and all, but every other character is more interesting. Which makes it easier to root for them over Naomi who is a great actor but an annoying/frustrating character
@@sparrowlt In the books, Naomi is sympathetic to Clarissa even at the end of book 3 when they escort her back to Luna, because of Naomi's past involvement with Marco and the blood on her hands. So she understands being on the wrong side. Also, Clarissa in book 3 could have killed Naomi, but let up for some reason. Anna's intervention played out a bit differently.
My take on the Naomi/Amos confrontation: When Naomi tells Amos that he should find somewhere else to be... She is speaking in the moment. She is pissed off and recommends that he back the fuck away before shit gets real. In no way is she suggesting that he leave the ship for good. If it wasn't a couple hundred years in the future, the line could have easily been replaced by the more contemporary expression, "get outta my face while you still have a face!"... lol
EXACTLY thank you
I took it that Naomi was pissed off at Holden for being classic Holden. And well let’s be honest Clarissa did try to kill her. She took her anger out on Amos and Amos in turn took it out on Holden for being Holden.
It’s like that in families under stress you don’t let things go that you usually would.
Thank you. They are all angry, tired, grief stricken and it’s forgotten she didn’t just try to kill Holden but HER so yeah so Holden forgave her don’t mean I have to readily do so after I JUST lost a family member and I’m not over my guilt of it.
Naomi need a spacewalk without a suit
@@Jtzkb You are may be right... There was a hint of that in his voice and the way he looked.
Just a reminder, here's the message from Cortazar to Sauveterre just before the Barkeith got eaten going through the Laconia ring:
"This is to confirm that the sample arrived safely. We are already seeing beautiful results. By the time you arrive, I hope to be ready for third phase construction. I am confident that the structures are stable, and I believe, still intact. With enough time and proper equipment, I have no doubt that I will be able to decipher the control patterns. Even with the sample in... [unintelligable] ...responses from underground structures all over the planet. They're all interconnected, just like Ilus."
Seems like they're still missing the fact that the Laconians smuggled the protomolecule through the gate before the main attack.
Also, the sunbird on Laconia seems to have been injured because Cara fed it - like giving chocolate to a dog. Or human food to a quarian.
A lot of people watching this episode forget about season 4. Remember Elvi talking about 3 life niches on Ilus: there is our niche (Earth life), protomlecule niche (that they adapted to themself) and domestic niche. Non of them are mutually compatible. What is good for everything in one niche is not necessary good for anything in other. Those organisms they had in eyes were not trying to kill them. The eyes were just good water rich environment and these organisms could be harmless for everything in domestic niche, but we are not from there.
That bird died because of eating breadcrumbs Cara (that girl) gave. There is more about this in The Expanse novella Strange Dogs (same as title of the episode), but I try to stay in spoiler free territory.
By niche do you mean biomes?
@ the whole tree of life (for example whole known life on Earth). I think Elvi used term "niche", if I remember right.
Book 6 mentions that stuff coming from the new planets (plants and animals) isnt edible as its a totally different biology than our biome
Okay, so someone will probably have to tell them to rewatch last season's finale scene.
The protomolecule sample did arrive safely on Laconia, it wasnt aboard Sauveterre's ship, but they missed that info. :)
The crew of the Roci are so tired, they stopped suiting up for potential engagements in case of hull breach, but Drummer's crew still does it. Just a note regarding the season 5 finale, the protomocule made it to Laconia, the Doctor in the message mentioned they received the sample and it's already effecting the Ring Builder Ship Yard. That's why the ship yard was turning blue at the end of last season. They even mention that the Free Navy are getting titanium from Laconia, probably from the ship yard.
i think the reason that they weren't suited up at the start of the episode was because the free navy ships caught them by surprise
Naomi is full of anger and frustration and is still grieving Alex and is just taking her emotions out on Clarissa also Clarissa tried to MURDER her and Holden, Us and Amos have gotten to know Clarisa and even like her but Naomi and Holden have NOT. I’d be side eyeing her too if she was in a place I called home.
Don't know if someone already told you guys, but this season has bonus mini episodes! You just have to pause the video and go to the x--ray option in the corner of the screen
When she said you need to be somewhere else i just took it as a different room I might have been more deep but it just felt that way
The protomolecule sample made it to Laconia. It was NOT on the Barkeith when it went Dutchman in the ring.
She killed that Sunbaby with her granola.
Not the baby, the mama sunbird
Yes! I was wondering what was up with it.
OLDEST TRICK IN THE BOOK
Laconia is the province in Greece where Sparta is located.
The word, "laconic" directly references the province, and describes the minimalist responses the Spartans tended to give to people who dared to try to threaten them.
The most famous incident took place when Phillip II of Macedon, the father of Alexander the Great, had started to conquer or suborn the Greek city-states.
Philip II sent a message to the Spartans that said, “If I invade Laconia you will be destroyed, never to rise again.”
The Spartans replied, “If.”
Phillip II decided to leave them alone. :)
Phillip II did invade Laconia, and was largely successful in his front against Sparta.
5x10 & 6x01 - On the same day!! 🎅🏻🎅🏻🎅🏻🎅🏻
IMO *Cara Gee* who plays _Camina Drummer,_ deserves a flipping Emmy! Have you ever seen her IRL? 🤯
Monica is the best at telling it like it is.
First of all sorry for my bad english
Clarissa or Peaches also almost killed Naomi in season 3, Clarissa try to bash Naomi face with the mech thing. Thank god Anna the preist came to taser Clarissa, Naomi is 100% dead if Anna didn't came to taser Clarissa. That is why Naomi still hesitate to trust her.
Anderson Dawes in the books, still play an important role in this season story, he is still the Governor of Ceres and he's the only person who managed to convince the remaining loyalists of Fred Johnson's OPA to join the Earth and Mars War Fleet Alliance in order to fight Marco Inaros and The Free Navy Fleet. Instead, Camina Drummer will take over that role.
They decided to kill Dawes in the show, because Jarred Harris (the actor that played Anderson Dawes) is too busy and couldn't came back to the show to reprise the role. It is very unfortunate, because he is such an amazing character.
Sorry for my bad english
Your English was good, this is a great comment.
So just as a note: in the X-Ray section on Amazon Prime, there are shorts too for this season.
I don’t see them. Where are they?
Such a shitty functionality...
well thats a shitty feature, how the hell am i supposed to know when to pause? i watched the whole episode and there was no popups or nothing
@@blakewarrington2580 I believe that for some reason or another they're only accessible on iOS devices
@@blakewarrington2580 Also, you can't have the bonus content in fullscreen, and as a non-english native speaker, the fact that I can't have subtitles on it; even english ones, is fucking problematic.
2 EP in one day yesss
WOOOO EXPANSE IS BACK
Just a reminder...Clarissa would have definitely killed Naomi if she had not been saved by Anna. She has every right to hate Clarissa
I’m glad alot of the comments are pointing this out. I think stabbing can sometimes make us forget to be 3 dimensional when it comes to character interpretation
Damn it, Anna.
I can’t taken Amos and Naomi fighting 😭
It’s like I’m a kid and mom and dad are fighting
Calvin nailed it. Stop the rocks, that allows the Combined Fleet to leave Earth orbital defense and go out and hit targets in the Belt.
The girl Cara on Laconia gave a piece of her snack to the mama bird. That appears to have hurt the mama bird. Pretty sure the "strange dog" and the "biology" on Laconia that we got a taste of portends something I hope we will see it in subsequent episodes (or in a sequel series or movie).
I wonder if it is the same Cara from books 8 and 9?
@@johntaylor564 it IS - in the novella "Strange Dogs", these events are described in detail and the result is exactly what happened to Cara, Xan, and most important, someone else - go back to book 9 and re-read the Elvi Okoye POV and the ending
Laconia = Sparta. It's the name of their homelands.
When Naomi tells Amos to be somewhere else I understood that to mean "go away, leave me alone" and not "get off the ship", was that just me? anyone else took it that way?
it was that way, she didnt mean for amos to leave the ship. just to leave the room
They are quick to judge Naomi tbh
Jared Harris, who plays Dawes, has been heavily involved in the show Foundation on Apple TV that I highly recommend.
Not as good as the Expanse in my opinion but a great sci-fi show and space opera.
Don’t waste your time with Foundation
For Blind Wave, and everyone reading this. On Amazon Video, if you open episode 1 and then pause and click bonus content or XRay, you will find a 5 minute mini-episode on drummers ship. One of these will release every week!
And here I was thinking they'd release today 5x10 and tomorrow 6x1. Glad I was wrong.
3:13 I love how the Slinker Vines have the actual sound a metal Slinky going up and down!
12:10 "There was a button so i broke it"
I can't speak for anyone else, but I watched season five knowing that Cas had been fired and constantly wondering how Alex was going to be written out. The writers solution seemed rushed but it was probably the best option available.
Oh it was def rushed, but im guessing it was a last minute "oh fuck" change. I have a feeling the alternative was dying off screen, which i'll take a rushed death, over an off screen one
They had to do it afterwards. Everything was already filmed. They couldn't even get Anvar back to re-dub a voice-over, let alone do any on-screen acting. So they did a pretty good job patching it up with a bit of CGI and a couple of re-written ad re-shot scenes with the remaining cast.
3:21 My take on that opening scene with the little girl was that she fed the alien bird something, and it wasn't good for the alien bird. You didn't show it, but she took something out of the snack bag and gave it to the bird.
When *Calvin* mentions that *Naomi* spoke to her son about the millions he killed, it wasn't just about answering to that. She said it's going to start eating at him.
*Edit:* I guess *Calvin* touched on that a bit at the start of the Q&A.
··•✺•··
Amos walking around the Roci is almost all CG, the face is real.
Amazing discussion, i loved it so much!!
Kinda cool that you guys were able to catch up in time for the next season!
Wonderful surprise!
Fun fact, Laconia was the name of the country that Sparta once ruled, later a province of the Roman Empire, now a municipality of modern-day Greece. Mars of course is the Roman god of war, which the Spartans were very adept at, so Laconia is not a bad name for a new nation founded by the most martial of former Martian military. ;)
Happy "The Expanse" Day everyone!
Naomi and Amos's fight was really about her being mad at Holden for putting himself in danger. And she's still holding a grudge at Peaches for trying to kill her and Holden. I do agree with Amos that she, Naomi, messed up before and they forgave her; and the fact that Amos brought Peach abroad, Naomi needs to have more trust in him. I don't like seeing my family arguing. I hope she apologizes to Amos and they move on from this. So interesting/funny that Flip is now realizing and feeling the guilt of killing all those people; and that his Mom was right and now he has pushed her away. He is definitely spiraling, his behavior here is definitely a cry for help.
Also, I love the callback to season 1, when Holden was hitting the drive to make it finally deactivate. It was just like when they were first stranded after the Cant and they were fixing the ship they were in, to get more oxygen and fix antenna
Good first episode😊
YES, Eric! 👏 Dominique Tipper is bloody brilliant as Naomi. It's one thing to be bothered by the character's choices and/or actions-- but to discount the depth of Dominique's portrayal would be ridiculous. Unfortunately, there are many ridiculous people in The Expanse's fandom who claim Dominique is a weak link in the series. They're ludicrous. 🤦♀️
The only actor who periodically didn't feel like a good fit for the character I envisioned after reading the books is Steven Strait as Holden. Now, to me, he IS Holden, but initially he felt too nerdy/gentle. Interestingly, Steven Strait turned out to be a nerdy, gentle, fatherly and considerate man; so, his true personality shun through enough to be initially distracting. Conversely, Dominique's playful, bubbly, flamboyant and talkative personality has never been evident within the show. This is similar to Cara Gee's true personality in contrast to Drummer's.
okay, rick is the reason i keep coming back for more.
I love the fact Eric is still pissed about the fish :D
Guys read the novella "The Churn" explains Amos's (and Eric's) backstory.
Make sure you guys watch the bonus mini Drummer episodes. You have to pause the show then click bonus.
gosh im so happy you are reacting to season 6
The little girl threw some food to the bird which is what hurt it, so it was obviously something in the food
Guys, they took the Protomolecule to Laconia last season. That scene in the last episode of S5 with Cortazar (the P-Mol scientist) giving a report from Laconia mentions it. It isn't unaccounted for or lost in the Sol system somewhere. It didn't cause the ring to vanish anything. The angry dark 'gods' (ring entities) are getting pissed off from all the traffic through the gates.
The Martian separatists/Laconians took the PM to Laconia to activate stuff their and study it. It's why they had that female officer chat up Alex last season about his experience on Ilus.
The reason the bird gets sick is because she fed it with food from earth. She doesn't understand that it is an entirely different ecosystem.
As others have said - watch the shorts in the Xray bonus content.
At one point the Expanse had been cancelled. Jared Harris went on to act in Chernobyl. By the time production had started on the Expanse again, he was doing other things. So his character was put on the sideline. This is different than the books.
Great reaction!
You're correct, The actor playing Alex is definite no but the character is definite yes! IMO it takes a whole crew to bring a character to life! I think the show is doing the right thing!
4:40 "Oh no! BREEEHOOOOO!" Killed me.
Gutted about Dawes being swept under the rug tbh . I hope it was just because Jared Harris was unavailable
I get that, I but I did love almost the message to the fans in Marcos words. He's dead, yesterday's men, move on guys 🤣
@@garethking5322 not got that far in the books but I always assumed Marco will either use him or kill him, but just seemed kinda written off, I find it hard to believe that everyone on Ceres is just cool with Marco after that. I guess we'll see
@@jbail2547 Jared Harris is balls deep in another sci-fi show called Foundation.
@@TealJosh ah I see that's a shame
Yeah, Jared Harris was busy with Foundation.
Only 6 years late guys!
17:40 You know that sensation when you are in a car and come down a bridge fast ..or during a take off or turbulence in a plane that you are falling deep?
thats what feels being in zero G.. thats why its also called "free falling"
Eric still salty about all his fish, wanting to get random people to feed his fish lol
He's gonna be forever haunted by that. Fish ptsd
@@MellyMelon1331 Indeed.
LACONIA, FUCK YEAH! Freedom is the only waaay!
If Anderson Dawes was still around Ceres would not be facing starvation and Marco Inaros would not be in charge.
The entire scene on Laconia I was thinking, 'where are her parents?!' They can't be sure their aren't dangerous creatures or predators on that planet. Who let her wander off by herself? I agree, very Jurassic Park: A New World.
They named their new planet after the Spartan homeland and desire to build a even more militant nation than Mars. Kids dying is part of that.
Remember the Cant
Avasarala also in XMen 2 or 3 for a few mins- can’t remember which- but she sounded similar then and that was almost 20 years ago.
Agree w ur comments 100% on Alex- character vs real life actor. The writers totally could’ve ignored it but they respect their material and the actor as Eric said.
Was a little disappointed with this ep overall but not enuf to remain high hoped that this season is gonna be amazing. Need as much Avasarala as humanly possible! And thanx for reading the comments for s5ep10 and keeping ur reviews free from spoilers till afterward. The space shots are still epic level good in this show.
To be fair on Naomi's feeling agains't Clarissa "Peaches", she killed ALOT of people back in Season 3, and rightfully got put into one of the most heaviest prisons on Earth because of it. It's still kinda weird that she's on the ship, even 6 months later.
Naomi was literally a terrorist and Amos isn't a saint either - She's not better or worse than any of them.
Maybe she reminds Naomi of her past or sth or she doesn't like that Amos found a friend. Besides all the other shit that is going on.
@@nickdouglas736 She literally tried to murder Naomi herself, and if it hadn't been for Pastor Anna. she would have been successful. It would take me AND YOU, longer than six months to get over that. Coupled with Alex's death, and Marco murdering millions of people, with help from her son, she's going through a lot, and there's going to be so much guilt there.
@@nickdouglas736 it’s NOT the same both Naomi AND that Illus chick unwittingly engaged in murder of many lives. Amos killed because he had to to survive he he comes from and will make no apologies if it’s between him and you I yes gonna be him. Peaches, and trust me when I say as a book lover, I ADORE Peaches, however is a different breed and linking it to what others have done disservices her own lifelong arc of atonement she rightfully feels is owed. She intentionally set out to murder innocent lives, framed more innocent lives, tries to kill Roci and then tries to kill Naomi. That’s nowhere close to coorelatinh Naomi or Amos just because murder was involved. We all know Naomi is the most forgiving person when warranted but other than being Amos BFF she hasn’t proven a damn thing to make anyone forgive her and sorry sometimes just ain’t it. I don’t think it’s out any any realm to see that Amos read was both right and wrong while Naomi’s is both right and wrong cause she can break it down to him because lord knows he probably needs to fully comprehend those more complex feelings. But I disagree with the automatic they’re the same. That’s just bs
Two expanse in one day?? I'm in heaven..
They really gonna do Dawes like that off screen lol, hopefully he’s just chatting bs though I doubt it
It did feel evident that they were adjusting the pace for a six episode season, with parts of this episode a lot of scenes felt very condensed and more like snippets of longer scenes. Felt it especially in the scenes with Holden on the asteroid with the drive and the ending scene with Philip in the bar where he finally loses it. Both lacked moments of pause that we would have normally got with a 10 episode season. It’s not normally evident when you have a show starting with less episodes in an early season, the problem with it especially happening towards the end of a show is that you end up with less time to fit in more characters, not to mention time spent on Laconia in the opening. I was hoping with them doing this we might get hour long eps but seems we’re getting the standard 45-ish ones, I worry if I feel it like that in the 1st ep, is the entire season gonna feel rushed?
Once the expanse is over Foundation is an excellent candidate to react.
Laconia is where the Martian separatists settled (the name is an homage to Sparta).
Great premier to season 6 ........The actor who played Dawes is in big demand on other shows , I thought they may bring him back in a cameo but because of
covid you just cannot flip between sets and now they just killed off the character off screen.
Keon Alexander as KHAN!!!
Really enjoyed your guys take on the whole Alex the character vs the actor thing. Alex was a member of the family, fuck that guy but I really respect The Expanse team for not just trying to "forget" about him.
Am I the only one who thinks Marco Inaros is the most unthreatening villain in any serious tv show? I just can’t help but laugh when he acts tough or threatens people.
You mean with or without the top knot ?? Lol. Yeah- he was a bit clownish this ep imo. Last season I didn’t get that sense.
@@franciscooctavius5957 and he has eye liner on, short, has his chest push out with his shoulders back. Just seems like a theater kid than a intimidating man.

Nope
Please react to Cobra Kai Season 4 Trailer
You guys should react to the anime Overlord
foundation is a great show you should watch it! but I don’t know how apple handles react videos.
I've seen people react to Ted Lasso so they should be good. Was really disappointed with the fight scenes in ep 5. Then later on, the creators explained that it was filmed during the pandemic so they had very strict restrictions.
Hope you react to Hannibal tv soon if you guys like Morpheus 😉
Hi blindwave do you think you can react to anime called Edens Zero? :)
Anyone notice that the animals on the alien world seemed to 'feel' the activation of the proto-molecule ship in orbit? Curious.
The "dog" isn't really a natural lifeform on Laconia
There is a new cobra kai trailer out
Issue? what issue? sorry I dunno hehe XD
Ayy
I always feel like the show never wants me to like Naomi for more than half a season at a time
They could have at least had Anderson Dawes show up for one scene and have Marco kill him because he sees them as a threat.
I'm smelling Game of Thrones season 8.
I don't like Naomi, she was lying and withholding information all the time and got annoyed if someone was not 100% truthful with her.
Nothing against the actress, she does a great job and she is written consistency, but I simply do not like how she behaves and what decision she makes.
in this case Clarrisa straight up tried to murder her. Like, "had hands around her throat, literally about to make naomi die" murder her
Naomi lied about destroying the protomolecule because she gave it to Fred. Yes, it was something that negatively impacted the morale and trust of her crew but was also for her own disenfranchised culture and ultimately was just a philosophical difference between them all on what actions they should take politically. That is not the same as literally murdering dozens in the Ring, causing the deaths of hundreds more, and trying to murder the Roci crew, including almost strangling Naomi to death. Like, I like Clarissa and Amos but pretending like those two actions are in any way comparable beyond a very surface level or acting like Naomi is unreasonable to not want Clarissa around is just ridiculous.
@@raesnest Naomi was part of Marco Inaros crew and the OPA, she has her fair share of blood on her hands as well. But this was just an example. And I absolutely understand her disdain for Peaches.
She came across holier than she is actually is, several times before. Like going off, after the crew decided to help Dr. Meng instead of hiding on Tycho. Or leaving the crew in a critical moment, instead of going after protomolecule.
She abandoned the crew several times before, chasing her "own" goals instead of sticking with the crew and a bigger goal.
I'm not saying that she's a bad (Or bad written) character, I simply do not like her decisions and behaviour in general.
@@Deckaio Naomi never tried to ship up with the families of the people she got killed on Luna and those families were never just expected to get over it. I'm not saying she is perfect or always makes the right choice (even though I agreed more with her in the Ganymede choice and about the Protomolecule sample scenario, the way she did that wasn't right) but it's disingenuous to try to compare Naomi "withholding information" or choosing to side with Belters with Clarissa literally committing premeditated murder, multiple counts. Even Naomi being a part of the reason for the Augustin Gamarra explosion is not as comparable to what Clarissa planned for literally months.
I mean Naomi has the right to not trust and dislike Clarissa that's 100% valid. She almost killed her lmao
Show is ruined ! Season 1 we saw the fluid on Ceres not flowing straight down, Season 6 they forgott to do it proper !
Jokes aside, comparing to H.P. Lovecraft fits almost... but don't hate Lovecraft, pitty him... his racism was born out of fear. If he would life today one of the Old Gods would be the embodyment of the Internet... i mean... damn... he made a Horror Story because he was afraid of an AC Unit xD
That could be because in season 1 they were closer to the core where the coriolis effect would be the strongest. It wouldn't be as strong on the outer edges.
Naomi needs to be spaced
After two seasons of mostly filler they give us six episodes in the final season aye?
Every episode over the last 2 seasons advanced the story and provided character growth. Not sure what your criteria is for filler, but it doesn’t apply to the expanse.
Filler?? S5 was anything but my friend. S4 was out intro to the ring worlds and some amazing story arcs, vision and acting. Pretty high bar u got there imo.
@@brbrd102 For some people, "filler" means anything that doesn't have lots of "pew pew" and flashing lights.
