I'm two minutes into this video, and I can already tell its going to be fun, informative and straight to the point. I watched two videos prior to this, and they felt so scattered. I had to skip around here and there, but still didn't find them that useful. Thank you for this guide. The visuals help a ton and overall layout of information.
Bro, all the info, all the research you saved me and others. Thank you, thank you , thank you! You are making some once-in-a-lifetime trips possible for my family and I.
I use to live in Flagstaff, AZ. .. back in the 90's .. explored Lake Powell by boat, and did a bit of water skiing .. Page, AZ wasn't much of a town back then. Awesome video !
Thank you. I bet it was fun to explore page by boat. I hiked around it. Its beautiful and quite a bit different than our north eastern lakes. Page had just about everything a person can need now a days.
I found you through suggested videos recently. First off, great work! I recently started working on my own UA-cam channel, so I’ve definitely been doing my research, these videos are very informative! Please keep it up, I just subscribed & am look forward to seeing what else you put out! Thanks again!
Thank you for this! I was worried about the drive in and the road conditions. I don't have 4 wheel drive and my Ram ProMaster 3500 van doesn't have high clearance. I think I'll need to take another vehicle in.
In just three years the changes to apply: Now: $9 per lottery application (not sure why the fees increased almost 100% while the website is the same?) Now: 64 people are allowed per day, 48 online, 16 in person in Kanab
Just got back from my Wave trip. It was incredible, but not sure I would spend years tying to get a permit. The Wave is still overwhelmed even with the 60 people limit. Unfortunately you are likely to find Chinese/Asian people plopping their butts in the main section for the entire day. The ranger we met said it has become popular for wedding photos and these all day photo shoots. He told a story about a Japanese couple where the woman brought 10 changes of clothes with matching shoes. On our trip there were like 6 Chinese people 2 "models" and 4 others taking pictures. They were pretty much in the same spot for at least 4 hours. If you need to get pictures, they will move if you ask. But, they still made it feel like you were the one in the way if you wanted to walk through that section or take photos. Technically they should be getting a professional photoshoot permit for something like that. Maybe it was our unlucky day, but it seems to be becoming a problem that the BLM needs to place limits on. It was a zoo and not really a pleasant experience at the Wave itself. It's a once in a lifetime trip that you will only want to do once. But, please go prepared. Do not bring your dog. Carry all the water they recommend. But, if you are just there to be a tourist, do photo shoots and ignore the rules, stay home. Unless you are an experienced and prepared backcountry hiker who can hike 6 or more miles in extreme and variable conditions, you will be wasting your time and money or worse yet, spending a lot of money for a rescue. Spend the money and hire one of the local guides if you are inexperience and insist on going. Sadly, they changed the day of lottery and you can register for it online even if you are in Page or Zion. Which means that the casual tourists will be terribly overwhelming I bet. Funny thing about the road, the next day, a friend tried to help some girls who had a pass for that day. They got a sidewall cut in their tire and they had only reached Buckskin Gulch. They would have had to travel the rest of the way on a donut tire or hitch a ride in to make their hike. The road was in almost perfect condition with just minor washboard. So, yeah, the road can cause problems. And, I have seen it with very deep ruts from winter mud. It's not that far, but if you are driving a Prius or similar light passenger car, you'd better plan for double or triple the time to cover the miles. Also watch out for tumbleweed. Do not run over a tumbleweed! They can easily destroy tires too. They have added a few more markers for way finding. And, by the time you get near The Wave, there will be a pile of people at the steep climb into it. So, it's not too hard to find if you study the maps and have good navigational skills. If not, you will probably get lost.
The online permitting is now done through @t and the non-refundable fee is $9. If you win, there is an additional $7 per person and per dog. Also, the in-person lottery is no longer done at the BLM office, it's now held at the Kanab Visitor & Convention Bureau, 20 North 100 East Street. (Park in the rear and enter the gymnasium.) There is no fee unless you win, and then it's the same $7 per person/dog. Another change. During March through early November, they draw every day for the following day. From mid-November through February, they draw on Friday for the three following days.
Thanks so much for this information…. Would you consider hiking the wave difficult? We are moderate hikers but could deal with intermittent difficulty. Best regards…..
Thanks for the detailed information! Would you say the road to the hike is doable with a non-4x4 campervan? Or do we have to rent an additional 4x4 vehicle in Page, just to reach this hike, if we win the permit?
I think you will be just fine. When i did it they tried scaring everyone with the road conditions and it the road turned out to be fine. I drove it with a four wheel drive vehicle but never took it out of 2 wheel drive. I did it in the winter when the road was at its worst.
@@daanxbox360 I've driven that road several times. The rangers are not lying. It can get full of deep ruts and mud. A light passenger car will take a beating if you don't know how to drive carefully on dirt roads. There are definitely low spots that can fill with water and mud. That mud can get like grease and cover your tires so you have zero control and lose all traction. It is very heavily traveled and gets serious washboard. I've only ever ridden on it in a Jeep. It could be a long dusty drive in a car. My friend tried to help out some girls heading to the Wave who got a flat tire. He had a patch kit and could have got them going again, but it was a sidewall cut. All they had was a donut for a spare. Unless they hitched a ride, I doubt they were going to make their hike. What's even worse than rocks though are tumbleweed. Do not run over a tumbleweed. They too can easily destroy a tire. If there is any wind you can expect to run across them rolling down the road. If you are inexperienced, just hire a local guide who can drive you there and make sure you get there and back safely.
Very informative video, thank you. It’s not an easy park to get in. The road to the waves and a 6 miles walk to get to the wave from the parking lot 😅😅😅What you need to ore while inside the waves, it looks big to be tuning and find the wooded area or bathroom??
The lottery is the hardest part about the entire event. I think it’s around six miles round trip, maybe a little more, The bathroom is right by the parking lot connected to the road, can’t miss it.
I peed on a rock. If you had to do more than that I’d say get way off trail and burry it like a cat in the sand, they probably say carry in carry our but idk.
Can short segments of your video be used with a CC license? You mention this above, but I'm sure if you meant your can be used, or you used others. Thanks. Nice video.
We just hiked The Wave on 11/07/22; my husband, me, and my twins are 11 years old, and my two dogs are both mini schnauzers. The hike was no joke. It is not a flat trail; you will go up, down, and sideways. Lol There is no trial, so please get yourself a trial app. I recommend the AllTrails app. It was beneficial. It is 3.2 miles to get there, and while you might think, “oh, 3.2 miles is not bad at all,” this one is. It took us 4 hours to reach The Waves. Be mindful of your time. You don’t want to be hiking when the sun goes down. We drove a Nissan Murano, and the road to get to the Waves was a bumpy drive, so please take your time driving it. Tolled trucks were at the entrance of the road. The experience was worth it. Take lots of water, snacks, a first aid kit, and a fully charged phone. Remember you will use your phone to navigate, so battery life is essential. We took a portable charger as well. When you reach the Waves and low-key cry inside, you will think it was worth it!! I know I did. 🥲

I’m fat, from a northern state, and not an avid hiker and I was fine, .
This is a great video. I’m a pretty inexperienced hiker. What do you recommend for someone like me? Is this doable for a beginner?
Yes , I don’t do a lot of hiking either, I take your time have fun
Loved this! Is the hike six miles total? Was your number the first one pulled?
Yes around six miles depending on the route, yes I was number one,
Joe Holland Fishing of course, you were number one!

How do you go about seeking a Navajo tour guide to hike the slot canyons?
You can pre book or just show up. I did one of each for upper and lower on the same day. One I pre booked the other I showed up.
Do you hike the same day if you win the pass or it’s for the next day?? Thank you!
It’s the next day , time to prepare.
I have a Subaru Crosstrek 4x4. Do you think it can compete that road?
Yes shouldn’t be a problem especially with dryer conditions.
Did you hike in March? If so how's the weather and road in March?
I think it was February which they consider the worst , but the road wasn’t as bad as the rangers led all to believe.
how do you take a still photo, but yet you can move across the still photo to have that movement ? thanks
Post production with panning and sizing.
How do you arrange for a guide for the antelope slot canyons
Just show up, they are all mandatory guided so they assign the native guide when you pay.
When did you go?
