Welcome to Killer7 where things get confusing and nothing gets clearer the more you play at least you're getting an idea of how things play out now not sure if you're playing when the update was applied but you can now assign 4 Smiths to quick change on the d pad instead of having to hit the pause button every now and then and try to check your map more frequently because the map points out which Smith is best suited for the puzzle and since you've upgraded everyone to getting a down attack I think it would be a good idea to shoot out the legs so that you can take them out in one shot if they're on the ground when they get too close to you and you now have an idea of how Garcian Smith works now just remember when you play the other smiths you can swap on the field rather than going to the TV
The game gave you plenty of hints, you just didn't put them together right. The kid before the Speed Smile was giving you a hint. You also need to become familiar with each Smith and their strengths and weaknesses, as well as abilities so you can get used to picking the best Smith for the job. Kaede's a Sniper and can break barriers. You want her more for precision. Con's the fastest on the Smiths in both movement and fire rate, doesn't have much firepower. Coyote and Dan are about the same against regular enemies, but you want Dan to take care of large targets with his charged shot, and Coyote's best for unlocking doors and infiltration. Also, should be noted that Mask is extremely powerful and dual wields grenade launchers, but because of that he can't hit weakpoints so you'll almost never get the best amount of Thick Blood from him.
