yess the fact that Rory actually went with Jess on the basket bidding date was so harsh of her...i'll love her forever and yes, she and jess did have amazing chemistry but Rory, honey....you practically humiliated your boyfried in front of the whole town, i'd be mortified lol

She did NOT humiliate stalker Dean in front of the town, Jess did and stalker Dean did to himself by not bringing enough money. She’s just a teenage girl trying to live her life.

This comment gives the same vibe as when people judge a girl for rejecting a public proposal. “He was humiliated oh no” who cares? She has the ability to make her own decisions. If he was not prepared for people to bid on her basket he’s not smart. He was insecure about Jess and didn’t trust Rory not to do anything. In a healthy relationship the guy would take it on the chin and have dinner with her later, but he blew up at her and people STILL blame Rory.

@@khiaaugustine9193 Dean had every right not to trust Jess or Rory. Rory asks why Jess is always messing with Dean and Jess basically says because he wants to. Rory knows exactly what Jess is doing, purposely getting under his skin and Rory lets him. And didn’t both Dean and Rory plan to have Dean bet on her basket and have lunch together? It wasn’t that Dean wasn’t prepared, but Jess just wanted to be a jerk and Rory does not stop him. In a healthy relationship, Rory would respect Dean and their relationship and not gone out with Jess. I would be absolutely livid if my boyfriend went out to lunch with a girl who 1.) likes him 2.) purposely makes me mad 2.) does not respect our relationship.

I didn’t like how Lorelai attacked Luke after the car accident. I understand her being upset that Rory was in an accident but her asking why did Luke bring Jess to Stars Hollow? He’s his NEPHEW! If Luke is willing to help her and Rory know matter how long she strings him along pretending she didn’t know he had feelings for her and she had feelings for him what would make her think that he wouldn’t help a blood relative. That part was incredibly selfish to me. I didn’t like that she made him feel so guilty he sent Jess away. It didn’t seem fair.

Lorelai was not acting right for sure. The accident wasn't Jess's fault, but Lorelai was waiting for an excuse to lose her temper about him. And she absolutely could not accept that it was Perfect Rory's decision to let him drive. She saw her baby hurt and wanted someone to blame.
I guess I get it, to an extent. It wasn't right, but she was emotional and impulsive, and didn't find an appropriate outlet for her feelings.

I hate the way Lorelai attacks Luke, but that contrasted with how Luke goes to find Jess, and comforts him rather than yells at him is everything. It's a crucial moment that shows Jess really does feel the consequences of his actions, and that both of these guys really do care about others despite their $hit communication skills and feigned aloofness (or grumpiness on Luke's part).
It makes me feel proud of Luke, but devastated for Jess, because you see how truly alone he is.

I sometimes wonder why she didn't take the loan from Luke, or get Luke to cosign a loan instead of Emily. I understand she has a lot of pride, and maybe feels the sexual tension with him so she doesn't want that to be a factor. But it would have been better than weekly DAR meetings at the inn. Luke could be trusted not to make it inappropriate and Lorelai would have paid it off.

And Rory did behave like a brat imo, because what does she think that her mother was no contact for over 15 years just for shits and giggles. I understand that she likes her grandparents but after seeing them only on holidays for so long how can she think that she knows best than Lorelai.

Lorelai can be a bit self-centered and my-way-or-the-highway (like her parents!) But she has nuance, and is really lovely too. I think the people who vilify her are the same people who don't see much nuance in general. Don't get me wrong, Rory reckoning with how being raised by a teenage mother affected her is the missing storyline in Gilmore Girls and many parents refuse to recognize their own bullshit, but it's WILD to say that Lorelai is a bad, toxic or abusive parent.

Viewers seem to think more fondly of Richard than of Emily, but his episodes with Lorelai and Dean this season show us who he is really is imo.
On a very real level he still thinks, “A Gilmore ought to act a certain way”, and just - can’t - accept that Lorelai is thriving and happy in a middle-class/lower-middle class life. And then when someone else can do something great and transforming for them (Dean getting Rory a car), he straight locks up and refuses to budge until a mistake is found, ‘cause he JUST - CAN’T - HANDLE that someone from that life could ALSO do something generous and magnanimous for them! “How dare you do something helpful for my daughter!? Don’t you know she’s supposed to be in misery and squalor when she’s not doing what we say!?”
He’d rather throw a fit and be a Karen rather than admit that his daughter’s life is pretty good, because it contradicts the pattern of control and conformity he believes they’re right to enforce.

YESSSS. So many people are quick to paint Emily as the villain (and Kelly Bishop did an amazing job playing one). But Richard is a covert villain for sure. Even though he's not messing with Lorelai directly as often, he doesn't disagree with Emily's treatment of her. He even states as much after Emily tries to break Luke and Lorelai up. He agrees Luke is "unsuitable," and doesn't care why Lorelai is upset, but he's going to use anything he can to bring her back into the fold. He's a cruel and vindictive businessman, too, and brags about it. And then has the nerve to complain about being "phased out" of his company, when HE was the one who "invented phased out for that company." He is a snob, an elitist, and just plain mean. He and Emily are perfectly matched in every way. (And I LOVE their scenes together.)
I've become more aware of his bullshit as I've gotten older and spent more time with businesspeople.

He is soooooooooo annoying, and part of my desdain for him does come from this "he's just a dude" place, but he is such a snob and anytime he's sad or having like big feelings it's always related to his sense of self worth, whereas Emily well she's awful but I guess she feels really guitly and lost about her and Lorelai's relationship.
Richard never once even thinks he may be in the wrong, and you can tell he doesn't even notice that there's something wrong about the way Lorelai acts towards him. And he's so manipulative, with everyone, not just Lorelai.

As an Indian girlie, the "Indian food stinks" jokes took me by surprise. Indian food is very pungent because we cook with a ton of spices and use onions, garlic, and ginger in pretty much everything. At 9:00 where you mentioned the conversation between Lorelai and Chris: in my opinion she meant what she said, and the way I understand it is: when she got pregnant at 16 she had to mature and make adult decisions even though she was a child, while she let him be a child and mature at his own pace into responsibility, without expecting him to be a father when he didn't know how to be. So she kinda waited, when he finally grows up, and to maybe get together then. Also, she chose to have a child, and with that choice alone she uprooted the life of Christopher in some way, because regardless of anything society, family etc will always make him feel guilty of not being a father. She almost was waiting to make sure that he is finally mature and happy, despite her decision to have the child, that inadvertently changed his life too. And yes, Lorelai can be immature at times, which should not be surprising considering that she skipped some developing phases and her admitting that she has sabotaged past relationships is showing that she is partially aware of her own underdevelopment and immaturity. So having the ability to be this honest is pretty mature on Lorelais's side, while Chris is still too dumb, self-centered and immature to understand that.

    • @Icetea710
      @Icetea710 Рік тому +3

I totally agree with you! But I think that Lorelai wasn't really open for Christopher to return either. They could have matured together. He was always available to her and made sure she knew but she refused to take him serious and that's what really pisses him off. They were both too immature before this point in the story. (At least that's how I remember it, haven't seen it in a few month, but watched it regularly)

    • @Aelffwynn
      @Aelffwynn Рік тому +12

@Icetea710 ehh, I think if he had made more effort to be present in Rory's life, Lorelai would have had a reason to take him seriously. During season 1, it's established that Rory doesn't see him often, and that she's used to him flaking on her. He doesn't even focus on a career so he can contribute money to her upbringing or education. When he finally starts to get his life together, he explicitly states that it's because Sherry pressured him into settling down. He starts calling and seeing her regularly because of the structure Sherry insisted on. Which okay, it's still nice I guess, but it isn't really Sherry's job or Lorelai's job to make Christopher do that. He should have done that on his own, for Rory. Lorelai did.
I understand if a teen parent freaks out and takes some time to get it together. But he was solidly in his thirties when the show began, and still not making a consistent effort to be present for Rory.
Edit: AND Lorelai showed an interest in getting together with him (after the Coming Out Ball) because she saw how he was finally being a responsible adult and being there for Rory. She took that seriously and wanted to be with him. But he had to admit he was with Sherry.

I simply don't understand the whole "Jess wasn't that bad, Rory loved him and he loved her" thing. Jess was clearly a jackass. He was rude to everyone, he did commit petty crime, he lied, he was defiant, and he openly manipulated Rory into creating a rift with Dean so he could get his way. Sure there was mutual chemistry there but the way he went about it was a dead giveaway of his rotten character and gee would you look at that, he left without saying goodbye because he was too emotionally immature to even face Rory after completely screwing everything up. Rory was the true vicious trollop for the way she publicly humiliated Dean and absolutely broke his heart and lied to him. The accident happened because Jess pressured her into ice cream and drove her car. Regardless of it purely being an accident, they were meant to be studying and Jess never should have been driving the car Dean busted his behind to build for Rory. Again, vicious trollop behavior. I just don't like anything about Jess when he first appears because he's a massive jerk and does nothing but manipulate Rory to do what he wants and he doesn't care that it hurts others and then he just leaves her. Sure he grows up later, but it doesn't mitigate his trash can persona imo.

I have no problem with a main character making mistakes and doing the wrong thing, but the show still treats the storylines like Rory is never wrong. Rory doesn’t have to deal with the fallout from cheating on Dean and humiliating him because they don’t go to the same school and everyone in the town acts like she walks on water. An olive brings out savory notes in gin, and if you want more savory or briney flavors, you can ask for a dirty martini which has some olive juice. Personally, I hate olives but I have had pickle-tinis which replaces the olive juice and olive with pickle juice and a pickle and they are good. Everyone has their personal taste with martinis, so it kind of takes a lot of trial and error to find what you like. My usual martini order is a Roku gin martini, with a rinse, and a lemon twist. It’s light and a little bit floral. 😊

I came here to say the same thing-though I’m the minority who likes olives I guess. That said, only bleu cheese olives belong in a martini. If I see a pimento, I’m out.
Even so, it’s a very specific flavor combination, and the classic lemon twist is also wonderful. Just be sure if you order to specify that you want gin (in my experience most places default to vodka unless you’re really explicit about it being gin), better still if you know the particular bottle you want. The gin that marries well with lemon is often awful with lemon (though it isn’t always true the other way round)

I genuenly believe that jesse was NEVER a good person or even a good match for rory, I mean he's a literal homewrecker, rory and dean were happy, and what did he do? Did he respect that? No! He did every possible thing to sabotage that relationship. Granted Rory didn't help but If the roles were reversed and and it was a girl trying to still another girl's man we wouldn't be so ✨understanding✨. He doesn't find her funny or charming and doesn't care that she doesn't like him back. Even after Rory begs him to make an effort, he realizes that he can still get close to Rory without Lorelai and he does. And yes, she has her reasons but as a former trouble kid she would have bonded with him if he had been a little more like Dean and made an effort to get along.
She was being childlish and petty, even tho she tried not to, she acted just like Emily.

In 2x11- you mentioned that Richard and Emily were able to raise Lorelei without their parent’s involvement- we never see Emily’s side of the family, but we definitely see Trix and her overbearing behavior, I doubt that she kept her mouth shut to either Richard, and esp not Emily, when it came to Lorelei’s upbringing. That may be part of the character development of Emily that she wasn’t ever good enough- as her mother in law told her constantly throughout their relationship- and may have added to the desire for both parents to criticize their daughter. (Def not saying they didn’t over-involve themselves in a WAY overstepping manner, just thinking they likely had Trix on them allllll the time).

No effort to try most of the time. I liked him later in the series a bit more- but not enough.
(I do realize I’m in the minority on this, and I’m sure people will come at me while defending Jess - I’ve watched through the show like 20 times. I just can’t. Sorry).

Idk if anyone has already commented on this but while I'm not the biggest Christopher fan I can see why he reacted like that. Like yes, the basic sentiment of Lor's not wanting to hold out for the unstable inconsistent father of her child is so justified lmao. But the way she says it kind of makes it sound like she's blaming her unhappiness on him. All her failures and breakups are now his fault and while she may not have meant it that way it sounds like even if she isn't mad, she still blames him for all the bad things that have happened to her. Which is a cruel to say out loud because it puts Chris in the position of blame for all of her hardship
((Chris still sucks tho I'm not defending his character as a whole LOL))

i think it's so unfair how people judge rory for missing lorelai's graduation, like it wasn't on purpose and she went to new york on impulse, she was just a teenager in love and indecisive, she was so in love with jess that she didn't even recognize herself and her conversation with lorelai afterwards was one of the parts that she really showed her emotions because most of the time she hid what she felt and didn't talk about it, I don't blame her, she was only 17 and she was discovering what it was to love, she liked dean but I think she only truly loved jess, and later logan.

Obviously I am binging your videos tonight lol ... but you bring up so many good points that I cannot help but respond! As much as I love Gilmore Girls there are so many plot holes that don't make sense. Especially about how Sheri was interested in being a single mom but then somehow snatches up Christopher when they are already broken up to be the parent to their future child then later skipping out completely for a few years. Sometimes the plot writing is a bit lazy. There could have been other ways to make things not work between Lorelei and Christopher. Him being really pathetic and boring for example.

I love Gilmore girls. But, the Sherry stuff made me deeply uncomfortable on rewatch. She was overall kind and respectful and Gilmore girls was supposed to be “female empowering” but was cruel to other women in the show. Very “pick me” vibes. But that was kind of the thing back then so can’t fully blame the show for playing into that narrative. Ok to like an imperfect show 😉

4:45 I think part of it is that they were also constantly told what to do, they had to live up to their parents' expectations. This is something we see with Emily and Trix, also with Richard when he tried to get Lorelai and Chris to marry, his reasoning was that in their families that's what they did, because he had to do it too. So since it was done to them, they see themselves as entitled to do the same to Lorelai. However, Lorelai constantly wants to do the opposite, and treat Rory as she would have liked to be treated by her mother. That's the main theme in their relationships

What Lorelei said to Christopher was harsh and reminded him he's a failure of a father. His reaction was warranted because while he isn't a good father, it was unreasonable for Lorelei to put the pressure on Chris to end up with her.
You're missing out on Indian food. I was raised on it and Indian food is amazing. --the comment is racist, that's the point. The entire town, but mostly Lorelei and Rory and Emily are fatphobic, racist, and extremely conservative.
What? I loved Richard and Lorelei working together. Richard is not being manipulative. He is engaging in the fantasy that he held on from the time that lorelai was a child, where she proudly stated that she was going to Yale like he did, and that he would work with her on the family business. Lorelei getting pregnant ruined her life but more so it ruined this plan that Richard had for them. Lorelei and Richard are so much alike and Rory is exactly like Emily. He sees that and he tries to counter the Emily in Rory by influencing her and spending as much time as possible with her.
I couldn't stand Lorelei and Luke as a couple. This season showed why they're better as friends. And we saw in the Netflix series how miserable they were.
Rory is a bad friend and girlfriend. You see it displayed through season two. She only really comes through when it's time to be duplicitous

Christopher’s reaction to Lorelai’s confession was him upset because HE was fully willing to get ready and get married. He was going to fall in line and get married, work at Richard’s company, and be with Lorelai and Rory. Lorelai rejected that and then ran away. Christopher literally spiraled out of control. He was lost and had no direction and floundered. He felt excluded from Rory and Lorelai’s dynamic (he’s still, by choice, a deadbeat). Then, when he finally got his life together, here is Lorelai saying she had been waiting for him the whole time. It was like a huge slap in the face.
Edit: Christopher remains garbage the whole series. Not excusing it, but I understood it because he had probably hoped she would want him.

  • @MKAYY25
    @MKAYY25 8 місяців тому

i think another layer to the termite situation is Rory is "loving" in the way that she's been taught by all the people in her life up to that point. You just do what you think is "best" to "help" the person you love when they "can't". That's how all the control Rory sees and is effected by is framed by emily, richard, dean, and even lorelai. So I don't think she can see how much she undercut Lorelai, since it's just what you do for family whether they like it or not.

  • @OfficialSTJones

100% everything you said about the Basket episode. That’s the best one of the season IMO. Chris wanted to be with Lorelai, which is why he got mad I think. He didn’t want her to move on from him. That’s what I’m thinking. I do agree with what you said too as well though. It could be a mixture. It was over the top and there was no excuse for embarrassing Lorelai in public like that. I’ve never heard the hate on Lorelai but I’m sure it’s out there and I’m glad you actually defend her. I love Lorelai! There’s no way I could watch this show without her. The only problems I had with her honestly was that she hated Jess so much and what she did on the season 6 finale/the whole first half of season 7 Lorelai storyline, that’s all I’m gonna say IYKYK I just don’t want to give any spoilers to anyone on here.

Sorry for not making much sense, i haven't been feeling the best this week. But i think i was trying to say was, Lorelia doesn't like polite society because she sees past people and sees their bad behavior as disrespect for her and Rory.
Emily and Richard are blind to it because those from a richer family or from yale always act more polite, when in reality they are not good examples. Lorelia shows that she is more of an aware and active parents because of past experinces with her parents, and their friends and the circle of their friends society.
But with Richard and Emily, they are only now, after so long, slowly becoming aware of this behavior in men Rory has dated, or that they've tried to set up with her, or the men they've tried to set Lorelia up with.
But when it comes to ordinary, or healthy boys who don't have bad qualities, or insulting their town, which is full of loyal and loving friends, that's what pushes Lorelia and even at some points, Rory, away.
When Emily and Richard finally accept the fact that sometimes people act differently, or even just the blatant obviousness of them losing their daughter and grand daughter, do they realize they've made, or believed the wrong thing.
Even when Emily and Richard still don't approve, they learn to keep quiet and accept their daughter, or grand daughters friends, or romantic partners, at least as much as they can.
Some of my favorite parts were when Emily and the towns people would meet.
Like when Emily and Rory went antique shopping, it had been so nice, or when Lorelia and Emily went shopping for Rory for her birthday.
    Or the food court.
Sometimes those moments are so precious, i love watching them, even though i usually can't handle Emily.
I'm glad Lorelia still loves her, but i wish they would compromise with her once in a while.
But you just eventually get use to being the one who always compromises the most, it's weird when others do it who you aren't use to doing it.
So sometimes i think Lorelia likes it better when she's in charge or is able to compromise to keep things moving because she'd probably feel a bit out of control or like the earth has spinned off it's axis. It's like knowing something could change and when it's goid and it benefits you, you're just waiting for the other shoe to drop, so you feel off when it's happening, not quite knowing what to make of it yet, or if it's actually safe to approach.

I note about Lorelei's signature drink. I love a Gin Martini with an olive. If you like savory, liquer forward drinks you might like it. However a twist means a bit of citrus peal as your garnish so definitely dont ask your bartender for an olive twist, they will look at you like you're crazy. Also, despite a gin martini with an olive being Lorelei's signature drink, I'm pretty sure she was drinking a Manhattan in that clip, so if you order a gin martini, dont expect it to look red like that. They are very different drinks.
