I was actually pretty surprised that only one of Sanderson's secret projects was nominated. While I've only read two of them, I thought there would be at least 2 nominated since it's Sanderson.

I didn't expect it to be on the list because of the popularity contest aspect of Goodreads, but Unraveller by Frances Hardinge is one of my top reads this year. She blends weird and dark fantasy with a lot of heart, and I think the theme of this one was so on point for this year.

I’m with you, The Weaver and the Witch Queen should absolutely have been there. Clytemnestra was one of my top three reads of the year but I was shocked to see it on the list. It hasn’t been talked about despite being amazing.

I now have joined the crowd of folks who wonder how the nominees are chosen. I would have thought it had something to do with the reader score. But you discuss a number of books that don;t just have scores above 3.5, they're above 4, I also looked at the publshers to see if they had a history of not getting along with Amazon and could have been left off for spite. No, that's not it either. This was great that you did this. Now I need someone to volunteer to do this for science fiction. It was a really disappointing category this year.
The Goodreads 'Best Books' sadly is just a usually suspects list. I lost faith in it a few years ago, stopped nominating and stopped voting. THIS list however, sounds really interesting. The Weaver and the Witch Queen, especially, sounds awesome!
City of Nightmares sounds really interesting. But now I can't help but think of what it would look like if I were in that world and turned into my fear (Deep space, it's irrational I know). It makes me wonder how that would manifest.
An author popularity can swing even a less well received book into the running , review # are the same (Godkiller has similar numbers to Witch King with higher total star rating). It also seems that fantasy and sci-fi get one token book for debut. And since Ink, Blood, Sister, Scribe was one of the few fantasy BOTM picks it blew Godkiller out for total ratings and probably other interactions.

I was surprised by the good reads nominees and shocked with some of the winners in certain categories. I’m going to read some that I haven’t read before to test the water. But some of the books I have read I didn’t like.
Magician's Daughter is very good, but l wouldn't call it cozy. It's very atmospheric but has this underlying tension, and some dark/disturbing elements that come in. A kinda gothic feel rather.
I read Godkiller based on your recommendation (though it was originally the cover that made me want to read it so it was just a bonus that it also sounded interesting) and I was so surprised at how small the copy was. It was just a tiny little paperback with tiny text and British spellings which all made it feel much much older. It made me really excited to eventually read the Witcher series too. I’ve only seen the third game so I had enough context to realize how similar Kissen and Geralt are towards Inara and Ciri. Even the way Kissen talked to Legs was similar to Geralt and Roach. Very excited for the sequel and will definitely be putting in a purchase request at the library when the time comes 🩷
