  • In Basel I have the chance to give you some other advice on how to use FlixBus, then I leave to Freiburg im Breisgau. I haven't really vlogged here because I spent the weekend with some of my good old friends that I haven't seen in years. Hope you'll forgive me. But I put together a montage of impressions of the town.

    My high school choir from Minnesota USA traveled Europe in 1969. I was 17. My choir performed a concert in the Freiburg Stadtpark Saturday, August 2, 1969, 8:00 PM. Then, for a week, we participated in an international choir fest. That was an extraordinary time. Freiburg hat mir gefallen.

      It's kinda interesting that a few people would take time and trouble to bring the sounds of real Alpenhorn to the Basler Hauptbannof in the days just before Xmas ... and then someone would complain to the police about the "noise". Good will to all men.

    I can relate to you going back and how it changed you. I spent 2 1/2 years in Germany with the US Army. 5 months in Berlin then the rest in Bayreuth. Having my son stand with me in the same locations where I was, was emotional to say the least.

    You are earnest in your travel and endeavors on branding, i appreciate that greatly. Most vloggers are very extreme in their personas, over flashy ad pronounced. I prefer your style because it enhances the cultural and natural experiences that you show in the videos. Of course your content is fantastic! I have been watching many of your videos lately, but i will make sure to like and comment on each upload to help the most i can with the visibility. Love your channel

    I visited Freiburg with friends in 2002, while heading back to the French alps after a snowboard contest in Austria. Spending the night at my best friends girlfriends house, we had a great night out and the next day went to a beautiful coffee shop (The Oscars, I believe?) that sold the best breakfast, before a little sight seeing and hitting the road. Such amazing memories, especially given that it was my first time in Germany. Now I am dating a girl from Münster and have been lucky enough to spend a lot of time enjoying many of the beautiful sights on offer in Germany. We are now thinking of possibly relocating to Freiburg in order to be closer to the alps. :) Thank you for your wonderful content and for sharing your emotional experience. Best wishes from Scotland. Duncan.

    • @WhatashameMaryJane
      @WhatashameMaryJane  3 роки тому

      Hey Duncan! Thanks for sharing your beautiful memory of Freiburg. It warmed my heart reading it.
      As far as I could experience/hear from people who have lived there for a long time, the only real problem that some have with Freiburg is that it's after all a very small city and therefore doesn't offer the broad cultural life that other cities offer, although it's very lively for its size, mainly due to the university. So if you don't mind that, I think it might be a great option for being closer to the Alps and still living in Germany.

    Ha nice that it was in 2011-2012. Was the best year of my studies. I started with an internship here in the Netherlands at the national park/forest service, leading to me wanting to follow a master at Wageningen University in relation to sustainability. The best and workwise most fun internship I did. Followed by a trip to Istanbul for our minor, staying at an appartment just of Istiklal and apparently at the very entrance of a neighbourhood with a not so great reputation(which we didn't know). For the summer holiday I went back with my dad to Sri Lanka for the first time since I was adopted. Love the videos. I do want to visit Freiburg in the future, looks nice. I've passed it numerous times when going to my aunt in Switzerland, time to make a stop the next time ;-)

    • @polipolimaui

      @@WhatashameMaryJane Thanks, haha if you'd like to know more let me know no problem ;-) E.g. Istanbul is incredible, but you know that already of course since you visited it with your husband. We didn't even visit some top sights, Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque or Topkapi, but we saw a lot and were never bored. Watching your video triggered my memories so I thought I'd just share them. I found your channel probably 3 weeks or so ago. Got a video from Actionkid in my recommended list. Apparently because I looked at some of his cycling videos, as a Dutchman that still seems like a challenge to me. I've been to NYC once when I was 19(in 2009), but didn't cycle then, so next time. I like his videos, you feel like you're touring the city and it's relaxing. Anyway the recommended video was him with you checking out Little Italy and trying food, I ended up watching both videos. I mean an Italian trying Italian food in the US triggered my interest. So that's how I got to your channel, seen a couple videos now including the one on Istanbul of course. I'll stop typing now before the comment gets even longer ;-) Enjoy the rest of the day.

At that time no flixbus, no smartphones but we always book apartments for our holidays or even better privatzimmer (bedrooms in private houses as you know) because one of most interesting part of our holidays is talking to local people. Last year we went to Slovenia and we had an interesting conversation with the lady, owner of the apartment, about"their" way to see and live EU. That small alley I wandered into when I got lost, one of the first nights I spent there, is the most precious memory of that city, aside from the people, of course. But, well, it seems that the studies will keep going digitally and I won't be able to study at the university on-site... • @WhatashameMaryJane
      @WhatashameMaryJane  4 роки тому

      Something quite unique was a first impression that I got: the quietness of the center of the town. Even when it's super crowded, it's still very calm and still. I took a few days to understand why: it's the lack of cars!

    • @charlesphirpo2833
      @charlesphirpo2833 4 роки тому

      Yeah and slow. Like people are never in a hurry. Actually the former mayor of Freiburg took a rather popular book title to describe the Lebensgefühl in Freiburg: the lightness of being (by Milan Kundera). Which was somehow quite fitting I think. (Leaving out the „unbearable“ of course) So on your list of top spots to live, where would the Freiburg area rank? Spaceholders for places you haven’t visited not included;)

      Andrea Per arrivare c’è il treno, non mi ricordo se DB o SBB, se comprato in largo anticipo ai tempi in cui vivevo là costava 50. Flixbus di solito 35 è il prezzo minimo. Ho paura che l’alloggio costerà un bel po’, ma io stavo in appartamenti quindi non saprei dirti di più. Cose da fare consiglio noleggiare una bicicletta e andare in giro in bici in lungo e in largo. Andare in città per mangiare, in zona università per spendere meno, oppure letteralmente fermare universitari per strada e farsi consigliare da loro. Una passeggiata sullo Schlossberg è d’obbligo.

    Mary Jane, a very important element to traveling is SECURITY. When traveling you need to invest at least 30% of your resources into security and personal protection. Learn personal defense, and learn the Jason Matthews concepts when alone or surrounded by others.
