I think we all feel the same some days. One day we're full of enthusiasm and another we're thinking no maybe not, especially when we see the bed we weeded 4 days ago full of weeds again!! I went out at 6.30am to find all the lupins I grew from seed, which took ages, had been uprooted. Some sort of rodent. Can't blame the slugs this time. Sending energy to everyone who's feeling overwhelmed xx
Aaargh we have so many things sent to try us don't we - but we live and learn (which doesn't help when you've seen all your hard work turned upside down I know)! Positive energy will be much appreciated by many I'm sure. Thanks Jenny.
We all have days like that and It’s ok to have a day just relaxing in the garden. It’s worthwhile listening to your body and just doing what it’s telling you.
Good Morning, Jane. I can really relate to your feelings about being overwhelmed and not feeling like doing anything! I even have a long list of creative excuses for not doing anything. But, if I'm not in the mood, nothing works out anyway. I have to make a decision in the mornings that today is the day I ..... fill in the blank. Plus, it helps me to make a written list so I can check things off/ remember to do them. Your garden is coming together beautifully. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Oh I know - I really should write more lists but sometimes the smallest thing can seem like a big achievement - weeding the beds helped me feel much more on top of things! Thank you.
Jane, I live in the high desert of NM, USA. Much to my surprise, I planted some bareroot rhubarb and the second year of having it, I had slugs show up. Pesky varmints for sure! Keep up the good work as you always do. You are a ray of sunshine!
Well let's just hope they don't like the look of the palace and stick around! I've just been 'having words' with a rather large specimen nibbling the tops of my pepper seedlings - I wasn't impressed! Thanks Marilyn - that's very kind.
Fab video as always Jane ❤️ I know exactly how you feel! Sometimes I wander around the plot deciding what to do first, then Danny comes over we have a cuppa and a chat for ages and then it's time to go home 😂 I do love a bargain, plants and charity shops are my favourite. Fab clock, what a bargain 👍😍
Oh goodness I don't think anything would get done if I threw Danny into the mix - maybe give him a long list of things that need doing and sit back and 'supervise' ;) Oh yes a trip around the charity shops is one of my favourite things - you can't beat a bargain! Thanks Linda x
@@JanesGrowingGarden No chance of Danny doing my work for me, he has enough of his own 🙄 He just comes over for a rest, usually he's done a few hours work before we arrive so he's ready for a cuppa 😂 We must try to arrive earlier 😂 x
Hi Jane, your dahlia bed will look stunning again, especially with all that preparation to the bed. Mike is doing a great job looking after your ginger how many shoots already.
Ha ha - three shoots - but three shoots more than I was expecting! I don't have as many dahlias as I would have liked this year so will be bunging a few more plants in between - as long as it''s full of colour I'll be happy. Thanks Ady.
Fair play for showing the tunnel Jane because it’s real life. Ours was the same and last year it was a total disaster!!! Between mental health and physical health I just couldn’t face it most days. I’m back in the saddle this year so far but my husband has done so much of the work. I this your garden looks great. It’s such a large plot and you do so much!
Oh I'm glad to hear your husband is involved as well - Mike is a great help even though I get quite frustrated with him at times! Good to hear you're back up to speed - take things easy and look forward to enjoying the fruits of your labour. Thanks Geri.
@@JanesGrowingGarden 🤣🤣🤣 I do too Brian is not a gardener by any means, he is however fantastic at clearing the mess! So I’m biting my tongue 😘😘 I really enjoy watching your videos Jane, you are very down to earth. I’m happy to start afresh this year and fingers crossed it all goes well xx take care pet
We all have them, and usually when we least expect them. It's just good to remember that the garden will wait, it's only us who want to 'get things done' in a certain time frame. I hope you have a less meh week ahead! Thank you.
Hello Jane, For the double sided clock. You might want to look for marine silicone in a tube. The marine silicone works on boats in water so it will work on the clock. I buy these 2-3 tubes every spring and I do use them all summer every time I find something wet. I know we all get busy now and some of our efforts have gotten us failures and difficulties. If we allow our magnificent brains to get stuck on and dwell on the negative everything becomes even more difficult. With losses we need to say OK and move on. Writing it in a journal allows us to look back during the winter to look for solutions but for now just move on. You did mention a few things you did rather than working. Give that a lot of credit because it is you or us enjoying the space we are creating. I have shared with some the idea that a garden is always growing evolving breaking down and starting over again. I have declared I have no intention of finishing my garden because the only way for my garden to be finished means I am no longer working it anymore due to illness or death. So I love my garden Even the messy areas. For all the hater's and nitpickers shame on you look for some ways to encourage folks and stop putting others down. There are folks just hanging on and your negative words can lead directly to them giving in and quitting and that is the ultimate shame.
That's a great idea but I will need to get in occasionally to change the battery - the glue does sound useful though, Mike's always sticking things together! Oh I'm so with you on the garden never being finished - it's constantly evolving and with it we are constantly learning - I can't imagine thinking 'oh that's it I'm done now'. I do worry that a lot of people look at seemingly perfect gardens online and measure themselves, often unfavourably, against them - the fact that you are getting outside and being in nature is wonderful in itself, it's not a competition! Oh dear - you can tell it's a bug bear of mine can't you?! I do hope showing people that we all have 'meh' days will help - but we still carry on because we love it really! Thanks Steven.
Jane it's OK to not do anything at times, remember it's not a job,it's a hobby,so don't worry about not being bothered at times, and just enjoying it. I always say,we are guests among the weeds,it's my way of dealing with, that at times weeds grow better than our plants. Pesky slugs, 😂😂😂. Well done on everything ye do,and being so honest. Jane you are a gem,and glad you caught up with fellow gardeners last week. Have a beautiful weekend.Whoohoo, great bargains Jane.
It can be difficult sometimes, especially making the videos as well, but it’s good to remember the nice bits - and everyone is always so supportive! Thanks Lorraine.
@JanesGrowingGarden yes indeed make the videos,I video mine for personal viewing,to remind myself how far I have come. You are so good to share your world.
What a lovely video Jane. I’m excited for the dahlias and totally admire the polytunnel honestly. I am much the same way as you about housework.. don’t know where to start, meh meh meh.. disappear outside instead 😂
Hiya Jane. Your Dahlias look wonderful. I love love love Dahlias. Most of mine ‘melted” in storage over Winter. 🥺. Bought some new ones and will change my approach to storage this year. That chicken bedding looks interesting. Can you tell me more about it? Have a great week. Mags.
Oh I know - none of mine survived - a bit of rethinking needed here as well! The bedding is from a company called Ethos which stock our local animal food store - it's so good - not just for the chickens but mulching, slug defence etc (see comment from 'justanotherfaceinthecrowd' above). It costs us £8.50 a bag and has plain or scented - we love it. Worth looking it up online and seeing if there's a stockist near you. Thanks Mags x
Jane, I am having so many meh days!. I have found it a really difficult year. Germination has been terrible, peat free compost ugh! I had the lottie prepped and all the weeds are back. I dread putting my precious veggies in the plot having struggled to rear them as i am sure the slugs will have a feast. The lottie is giving me no joy!! (Feel better for getting that off my chest!)
The dahlia bed will look fabulous Jane! I've only just gotten around to getting my dahlias into pots and I've had dreadful germination on a lot of my flower seeds! Thankfully there are plenty of calendula, tagetes and the like coming up in the beds from my compost...so waiting to see what comes up is a good excuse for my lack of weeding, but we will be having a late flowering border this year ...better late than never though eh? 😆 Have a good week.
Snap! I planted so many seeds but am now looking around for anything that self seeded from last year - sadly I think most of it has been hoed! Fingers crossed we'll all have some colour in our gardens at some point! Thank you.
Haha, you sound like me when I see a bargain, buy them all up and then wonder where I’m going to put them all 🤯 Those dahlias are going to look beautiful, mine are a bit behind because they got slugged as soon as the first shoots started appearing so I’ve had to bring them indoors until they reach a height where they can fend for themselves a bit better.
Aaargh it's rained ever since they went in so I'm hoping the miscanthus works! Good idea to get them nice and strong before they go out though - it'll be worth it in the end! Thanks Nicki.
Did we go overboard with the sell off??? Noooooo 😂 Bring on Gardeners World Live!!! That said, I have gone overboard with dahlia cuttings and now have like 50. Oops. But like you I think they're just gorgeous. Mine were munched terribly by slugs last year - strulch did not save them. Trying to find the ethos for a decent price now - thank you for the tip 👍
Ha ha - that's exactly what I was thinking. I keep looking at the plants and just asking myself why I didn't get more! I've noticed the Ethos stuff is about £22 online whereas mine is £8.50 a bag - it might be worth contacting them and seeing if you have a local stockist. Well done on your dahlia cuttings - I'm hoping my remaining few will do me proud. Thanks Kerry.
