  • HMS Dunraven, originally a British cargo steamer built in 1891, was requisitioned by the Royal Navy in 1917 and converted into a Q-ship. Under the command of Lieutenant Commander Gordon Campbell, Dunraven was armed with hidden guns, torpedo tubes, and depth charges. The ship was crewed by Royal Navy officers and seamen disguised as civilian sailors. On August 8, 1917, while operating in the Bay of Biscay, HMS Dunraven encountered the German U-boat U-61 (some sources mention it was UC-71). The U-boat had spotted Dunraven and approached, believing it to be an unarmed merchant ship. As the U-boat surfaced and opened fire with its deck gun, Dunraven simulated damage by releasing steam and smoke, creating the impression of a damaged vessel. The crew of Dunraven, acting as panicked merchant sailors, abandoned ship and took to the lifeboats. Meanwhile, the concealed guns and torpedoes on Dunraven remained ready to engage the U-boat. Despite being heavily shelled, Dunraven's crew remained motionless until there was an unobstructed view of the U-boat. When the U-boat came within range, the Q-ship's guns and torpedoes fired, causing the U-boat to realize it was facing a Q-ship and to dive and retreat. Although Dunraven was hit by a torpedo, the remaining crew members, including Lieutenant Commander Campbell, continued to wait for an opportunity to strike. The U-boat fired additional shells into Dunraven before finally submerging and leaving the scene. As a disclaimer the map animations are not entirely accurate and are there as a visual aid to give you a general idea of where the ships were.

I hope you all enjoyed this look at an interesting story. I apologize for not having a definitive answer for what U-boat participated in this action (although I think it was probably UC-71). Also, this will be the last time I bring up audio. But, this time, I have a solution, and it's improved things immensely.

Hey its ok. This battle happen over 100 years ago and Germany destroyed a lot of records to keep the victorious allies from getting them. Plus the normal thing of records being lost. Jesus this was 106 years ago. Our generation will see the death of the few remaining ww1 vets alive, the ww2 vets and maybe even the Korean and Vietnam vets. That's a heavy heavy thought. God bless them all.

UC-71: "Oh a freighter ripe for the taking."
Dunraven: "You picked the wrong freighter to rob, fool!"
