HEY FILMRIOT! I wanted to say thank you so much! Sony is filming a feature film at my college and they asked me if I wanted to do some of the visual effects from the film. I owe it all to you guys. Thanks so much :)
when i was growing up we sat on glass in pools of lemon juice outside in the winter, this is a stroll in the park...standing psh, you young folks just don't get how easy you have it
The interplay between the cinematographer and Director has been notoriously difficult, but then you find someone who can see not only what you're saying but grasp the vision--and a super duo is born.
He’s a nice guy ... .honest & concise ... more so than most directors in big productions. Welcome the NEW WAVE. Putting the egos aside & focussing on the BIG PICTURE & STORY ! Well done guys.
Make a Short film with all the effects that you made that has something to do with superpowers, like invisibility, running through walls, teleporting etc. It'll be amazing
I kinda like the way they stood during this conversation. reminds me of standing in circles with my friends because there weren't enough seats for everyone.
They've answered this question so many times. Triune Films will release a feature when they're ready. You see so many independent filmmakers making features that end up sucking because they weren't ready.
Can we get more of these discussions with other crew members? I like how natural this interview/discussion feels like and not scripted at all. Which for some reason seems more informative.
I liked the fact that they're standing up because that just how you know is a set the last thing on somebody head after directing and discussing directing is sitting down lol at least for me
How does the pay work for you guys from ads on your vids? Does it come from subscribers/views? I have seen you guys grow at a tremendous rate and I am just wondering how that is possible. I hope this doesn't go too personal, I am just wondering.
Aidan Flaherty There's a cpm which means the amount they're paid per thousand views. It changes depending on the time of year, which advertisers are paying and is most of the time random besides big advertising times like Christmas. Usually it's around 1 or 2 dollars, but sometimes goes up to around five. Keep in mind, not every view equals profit, whether it's because they're on mobile, have adblock, or they just saw an ad. There's no way to tell exactly how much someone is making because of all the factors. But brand deals help a lot because they're more reliable and you know what you're getting paid. They always have brand deals on FR so they make a good amount more than someone with just monetization. Sorry this was long but I wanted to give a better explanation than just saying they get paid however much per thousand because that's kind of misleading. They don't make as much from adsense as most people think
Aidan Flaherty - Think of it this way. The average youtuber CPM is $1. Every thousand views they get, they get one dollar. A video with 100,000 views gets $100. However some people use ad block. So not all of those 100,000 views are counted. So let's say 80% of those views are watched with ads. That's $80 on a video. UA-cam also takes 50%, so now that video which got 80,000 "ad" views now has earned $40. Some youtubers also though use outside sources for advertisement as well and they sell merchandise too.
"As long as we stay focused on tricking out our gear, no matter how fun and exciting that may be, we’ll be doing nothing to change the underlying economics of visual storytelling. It’s time for film technologists to aim higher."
Hey Ryan I would love to see an example of a reference board, not exactly sure what it is and if it's a consistent thing or if it changes from project to project. thanks my boi!
The assumption that a film director should focus on the actors rather than the way the shot looks is... a little bit underwhelming to say the least. Tell that to Spielberg, Lynch, Kubrick and Hitchcock. Why should a director only focus on one aspect of filmmaking? All the directors I admire are capable of rendering their vision from head to toe: script interpretation, dramatic approach, acting dynamics, framing, blocking, camera's coreography, texture, timbre, cadence, color, sound... everything.
Still Photography Do the high end video cameras do still photography well? Do you bring an inexpensive photo printer with you? I am thinking about continuity and quality control.
Mark Wells not usually, they can do frame grabs on some cameras (I know the Canon Cinemas do) that you might use for thumbnails and the like, but if you want photography, a dedicated photo camera is far more useful
Hey, Ryan, I'm working with my friends on an indie vampire movie and we need to know how to make the vampire blow up into fire and ash when in the sunlight. Can you please please please please make a tutorial about this?
i think the stand is fine. it makes eveything more natural which really came across... but the thing the was awkward was how fking close you were standing to each other lol or atl east it looked hella close
Hmm Just an observation but talking with your body turned away from the camera made me feel like I was not in the conversation. But Still a great video
Hey Ryan! Where could I contact you at? I am creating a youtube "Tv" series and I would love to chat with you about which camera's, lighting, sound etc you think are the best for what I am trying to create. The biggest thing I'm stuck on is which lens to get! Thank you!
at least under 5,000 dollars for either a new video camera preferably canon, or a new film lens for my DSLR (Canon also.) The lighting, sound, etc is all extra stuff! I'm just not sure which one would be good to give my short series a TV show/professional look.
Ill answer as best I can just in case Ryan is too busy. Assuming you're not building a kit from the ground up and you alredy have a camera and tripod, I would consider looking at the Rokinon Cine DS Cinema Kit, they're manual focus lenses and absolutely fantastic for the price (5 lenses for under $1600). If you go that route, I would look for a 15mm baseplate with rails and a mattebox because the Rokinons do have a tendency to flare and go a bit crazy if too much light falls on them. Sound quality is super important, almost more than video quality. I would look at a Rode VidMic and Zoom H4n. Good sound on a budget. As far as lighting, I tend to not like the budget LED panels on the market as they have a strong green spike in their color and this looks bad on skin tones. Film Riot has many good videos on budget lighting. I would look into clamp light cans with and Tungsten balance photoflood bulbs. This will ensure your colors are accurate if you set your camera to 3200ºK then you can invest in some gels and diffusion. CTO, CTB and Half white diffusion are a good place to start. Also pick up some hand dimmers so you can dim lights if they're too bright. With all of that you'll be looking somewhere in the range of $2,500.
I'll second Joseph's recommendation. I have a 6 lens kit from Roki as my personal kit and rent higher end lenses as needed. The roki kit is awesome though and while they have a somewhat distinctive look, for what you get they a great starter kit. Focus on sound. Make that a priority. Bad sound will instantly destroy credibility. As far as lighting, its far more about what you do with what you have and less about how MUCH you have. As my work has improved I've actually simplified my kit and stop worrying about every little odd piece of kit.
Sometimes.Pretty much on any indie film. But on big shoots the cinematographer is in charge of lighting and framing and the AC helps with the actual camera work like focusing and whatnot.
Gary Turbo sometimes. Depends. Some DP's like to camera op. I've worked with DP's that won't touch the camera they like to stand by the monitor and others I've worked with love to camera op. It's just preference.
Is there a manual system for pulling focus on cine lenses. I want to be able to pull focus and do iris pulls, but not wirelessly. two gear follow focus system?? can anyone help me? CAN ANYONE HELP ME!???? CAAAAANNNNN ANNYYYONNEEEEE HELLLLLP MEEEEEEE!?!?!?!?!??!?? AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! (: Gratsi
Hey Rioters! I recently made MR. HAPPYFACE, a short film concept piece (3 minutes) and would love some feedback on it! You can find the video on my channel. Also, I would love to see some of your work and give you feedback as well if you'd like! I think it's important that we all help each other out on our respective journeys! Keep writing, shooting, editing and don't forget to repeat!
HEY FILMRIOT! I wanted to say thank you so much! Sony is filming a feature film at my college and they asked me if I wanted to do some of the visual effects from the film. I owe it all to you guys. Thanks so much :)
Good luck
Jackson Welch well deserved good luck :)
What is it called? PS Sony you just got advertised for free :)
Jackson Welch congrats dude!
is it powers
There is so much goodness in here. Loved getting to sit in on this conversation. Booth is a stand up dude! Thanks for this Ryan.
Awkward standing is awkward. maybe take seat
Or switch to seating after awkwardly standing. But, the conversation was of great value!
Mraq Bolen I agree was a little awkward.
Do you think that they have chairs there to seat? :D
when i was growing up we sat on glass in pools of lemon juice outside in the winter, this is a stroll in the park...standing psh, you young folks just don't get how easy you have it
lol.... why were you even here then
The interplay between the cinematographer and Director has been notoriously difficult, but then you find someone who can see not only what you're saying but grasp the vision--and a super duo is born.
Ryan Booth is so chill.
Did they just stand up the whole time
QuichoFilms well sitting kills you so them Ryan's know what they're doing
He’s a nice guy ... .honest & concise ... more so than most directors in big productions. Welcome the NEW WAVE. Putting the egos aside & focussing on the BIG PICTURE & STORY ! Well done guys.
This is one of my favorite Film Riot episodes. Love you guys
Make a Short film with all the effects that you made that has something to do with superpowers, like invisibility, running through walls, teleporting etc.
It'll be amazing
Standing right off camera watching Ryan and Booth talk and it was so cool.
Filmmaker squad where you at??
BulletHolesProductions here!!
BulletHolesProductions Ayeee
here
***** bro it's lit!
BulletHolesProductions right here.
Ryan Connolly thank you for this! Brilliant interview, and enlightening. I love learning from others in the director chair👍😊🎥🎥
*It's* *Like* *Death* *Staring* *At* *You* *When* *You* *Look* *At* *A* *Camera.*
He's like Bergman and Fellini's love child...only even *_more_* melodramatic !!!
When you work hard, you stand a lot to have long conversations. Especially on film sets that change frequently. There may not be chairs around.
"Another new product that's gonna revolutionise filmmaking" ... 1000th time I've seen that ad
I kinda like the way they stood during this conversation. reminds me of standing in circles with my friends because there weren't enough seats for everyone.
I was recommended your channel today by a friend.
Glad I checked it out and subscribed.
Great info.
Cheers, Pete
Will we ever see a film riot feature film?
They have almost 1,000,000 subscribers, they should have enough money to make a film
Gary Turbo you have no idea...
Why don't they film behind the scenes of filming then sell the movies on Vimeo
They've answered this question so many times. Triune Films will release a feature when they're ready. You see so many independent filmmakers making features that end up sucking because they weren't ready.
They do something similiar already, they have a two hour BTS for sale on their website. Comes with downloads of scripts and things
I like that they were standing the whole time. It's different. There's more connection and body language. Also great discussion haha
Why is Film riot the Jesus of UA-cam?
Can we get more of these discussions with other crew members? I like how natural this interview/discussion feels like and not scripted at all. Which for some reason seems more informative.
filming my first ever comedy sketch today, wish me luck!
Yeah, it's going up on Monday 😊
I liked the fact that they're standing up because that just how you know is a set the last thing on somebody head after directing and discussing directing is sitting down lol at least for me
That whole discussion has pretty clean editing and quality of video.
Anyone agrees with me?
1 minute in the video and I'm already convinced by his handgestures
This show should have at least 5 million subscribers! There so good and have been round for so long! Anyone agree
Totally
Vibrant Films pro i completely agree too! They've helped me so much with my film projects with their useful tips!
Jahnna Lee Randall yep me too
Vibrant Films pro that's great!!!
That Audio so so buttery smooth! Love it! what Lavs are you using?
Double Ryans! Love these two.
Awww. "Touch hands!" Miss this so much. :-( :-( :-( 2020, COVID-19. :-(
This is pretty cool. I LOVED when they used to sit around in a cafe and talk film.
Loved the idea of a standing interview.
Great video!
This looked like a video game conversation.
Very cool insight on the working relationship. Great job on the short!
Pretty cool how y'all used coverage and switching camera angles on this interview like a dialogue scene.
This stand-up thing is awkward. Ryan feels too short.
Thanks for the great video. You people are awesome.
How does the pay work for you guys from ads on your vids? Does it come from subscribers/views? I have seen you guys grow at a tremendous rate and I am just wondering how that is possible. I hope this doesn't go too personal, I am just wondering.
Aidan Flaherty views, watch time, ad clicks etc.. all depends on the ads on the video!
They are also sponsored by domain.com, so that is probably a lot of their income.
Aidan Flaherty

Film Riot, Can there be a video of Director / Cinematographer Discussion on the set? Thank you.
you guys needed a cinematographer for this interview....
To the people going on about them standing: that's what you took from this?
"As long as we stay focused on tricking out our gear, no matter how fun

Hey Ryan I would love to see an example of a reference board, not exactly sure what it is and if it's a consistent thing or if it changes from project to project. thanks my boi!
Somebody knows how they add that natural camera movement effect?
Really informative, thanks for sharing this!
Ryan I was wondering g what your tips are for younger filmmakers, btw love the show keep it up
