If you wanna come to a place where you can learn 3 languages in a close area, come to Switzerland! Once you‘ve mastered one, you can move a different part of the country to learn another. You can learn German, French and Italian here! Switzerland is also neatly in the centre of Europe, and since its part of the Schengen area, you can basically go everywhere in Europe easily. You can even resettle in a different country in the Schengen area easily too!
True Normality Well, there probably are, but it usually really depends on the kind of job you want to do. A lot of times lots of experience (5+ years or more) usually can be a good substitute for a degree here. But the generally „degree-free“ jobs usually are not as well paid. But I‘m sure you could find one.
Sweizer Deutsch is one of a kind tho. I live next to Nordrhein Westfalen all my life but i need to really think what they're saying. At least it's lots cleaner and less criminal or crowded than Holland. It's pricey tho

It might seem weird, it's not just your home-stay mum that is this nice. When I was working as a volunteer after the flooding in Japan (about 2 years ago), cleaning houses en helping the rebuilding of the area we were in (Ehime), I had problems with my legs, from being stung by something and having popped blood vessels. This looked bad, even if it didn't stop me working. The moment I started wearing shorts (I don't usually do this, but it was bl**dy hot!), the local elderly ladies wouldn't let me work until they had given me some form of treatment and had given me a tube of cream to apply the next days. A few days earlier, a woman walked passed our local satellite camp (where everyone gathered to start work for the day) and saw we weren't wearing head gear....so she went off to the local shop and bought us hats with a neck protector. And so on, these are just the clearer examples, but we have had very nice experiences in Japan with just about everyone. Even if we also saw the bleak sides of society. Just make sure you don't abuse their willingness to help.
If you have a month to travel: I recommend starting on Hokkaido and travel south during you trip. That's what I did 4 years ago, and starting in the areas that are not as touristy and where you are instantly dunked into the Japanese culture give a much nicer first impression of the country. If you start in Tokyo, that will remain your first impression....and it might not be bad, but it's not the rest of Japan :) Ow, and just pick something like 10 places you want to visit and get yourself a JR pass. Shinkansen are great for the larger portions of the travel and the local trains/subways will do the rest for you. Don't forget to try a local bus or tram, just because it's so different to where you are from (probably)
I have always liked how Sharla gives some personal insight along with her Q&A segments. Having watched her vids now for many years and find it great to see things through her eyes. Some little changes I have noticed is how she stopped counting years in Japan right around 9 or 10. This was about the time she seemed to reach a level of comfort with the language too. Some of these questions have come up before here and on other J-vlog channels and I find it funny how so many have the same questions, especially about jobs, study, and simply getting to Japan. The more open declaration that she sees herself elsewhere in (around 5) years was rather new. Yes, she had hinted about in the past slightly, but this was the first time she mentioned it so boldly. Nice! Oh, and the first thing that came to mind, when the video started was, "Hey she's doing Micaela lips!" Dang that is some bold lipstick!
I agree with like all the other comments; your hair and the lipstick/shirt/necklace combination look great! It's funny that you say the north is always last on people's list. I did just the main spots the first time I visited Japan, and then went pretty far south when I went the second time, and my friend and I are planning to go to a couple northern places on our next trip. I'll be honest; we're not always enthused by scenery and views and nature (we still appreciate it, just for a shorter time haha) so we'll be looking for the interesting cities and cultural places.
I recommend looking at living in Slovenia. It's always overlooked but it's really beautiful and people are quite friendly. There's a lot of Italian and German influences too 😊 also super ecofriendly!
Even if you don't end up living in Sweden, I think it would be interesting for you to visit! Swedes are often called "cold" or even rude by some tourists, but honestly, we're mostly just shy and kind of like to keep to our own? It might actually be a bit like how japanese people react to westerners visiting. I felt very welcomed in japan, but also not crowded, but when I've visited the US, I've always felt like people are a bit too pushy at most places? Sometimes it feels like a good conversation, but other times I just felt like there was no way to escape lol
Irony is when I was in high school I was studying French and so badly wanted to go to Canada. I got all the information for my mom and she would not let me go. If your kids want to do something reasonably safe.....let them! I would be such a different person if I had been given different opportunities

I'll never be able to visit Japan, but one "pro tip" I've learned is to avoid the $30+ fee to view Tokyo from the top of the Skytree. Go to the Metropolitan Government Building observatory instead -- It's free and 202 meters high. (The Skytree view is about 635 meters high, but I'm not sure that difference is worth $30 bucks to most people).
Yeah it's nice. I was there some time ago, before skytree was built. It's nice and I didn't have to wait more than a few minutes to get in the elevator. And as you say, it's free. There are a few other free observation decks around Tokyo.
I visited both buildings and still would recommend Skytree Tower. The view is much more impressive than from the Metropolitan Government Building. I'd recommend visting both. Skytree to see how insanely huge the Tokyo area (including Yokohama, Kawasaki etc) is and the Metropolitan Government Building to get an amazing view over Shinjuku with all its fancy skyscrapers. If you've seen the view of Skytree even huge cities like London don't seem to be that big anymore. :-) Because there are now visible spaces between all the cities around Tokyo you see a sea of buildings where over 40 mio people live. It's really worth paying the high fee.
Enigma Dave I had to go back and find it, but there's a youtube channel called internationally ME, she did a video called Tokyo Tourist Traps in which she goes over a few alternatives to Skytree. Skytree may still be worth it as Michael Muller said.
Funny, I found the Government Building view unimpressive. I didn't mind the $30+ fee for the experience of the Skytree elevator alone. The view (which happened to be the night of a super moon) was amazing. The new Shibuya Sky is also fabulous, and I love the fact that you can catch a sunset from up in the open air. The Mori Tower building has great views as well which are included with admission to the Mori Art Museum (always worthwhile). For 500 yen more you can go to the outdoor level one floor up which I love. Tokyo Tower is the one that's the cheesiest experience. The best part of it was the little history video of the man who commissioned the idea. Tokyo Tower viewed against the indigo skyline from elsewhere, however, is amazing. If you want to splurge the views from the Park Hyatt are lovely, too. I spent Christmas and New Year 2017 alone in Tokyo so I gifted myself with some unforgettable experiences to keep my spirits up. I saw an amazing sunset behind Mt. Fuji there while drinking champagne at the winter solstice.
so many treasured memories, i remember heading out to fuji and arriving in full deep fog and rain, i didnt care i just walked around the backstreets practically no idea where i was going for a couple of hours just getting soaked and lost in the wonder of such an unfamiliar landscape, theres so many times i can recall feeling so alive on my travels there.. and then you have to return to your own country where everything is so familiar its hard to be motivated to even leave the house most of the time lol

I've always been super sensitive to noisy neighbors that years ago, in an effort to not _be_ one, I began watching television with headphones. Now I can't imagine _not_ using headphones or earbuds to watch tv. Not only do you control the exact volume for enjoyment, but it helps to keep you immersed in the story.
Omg, it would be soo cool if you would live in Germany for some time : ) The "typical" Germany you would propably think of is southern Germany, but the other regions are great as well. I live in western Germany, close to the Belgian and Dutch border and it's pretty nice here.

Jess It does seem you Americans freak out about everything. It’s not a murder hornet, but an Asian giant hornet. The main risk are the elderly of dying from a sting, much like a bee sting from an allergy. Think there has been one death so far in the States and whilst extremely painful, as described here, nothing to freak out about.

Helen Pauls Helen Pauls I would be far more worried about Africanized honey bees than the giant hornets, since the latter seems to not attack unless directly threatened. Also, the main thing people “freak out” about is the toxicity of the venom & its ability to cause necrosis. Never mind it’s just unsettling to have a hornet that large. But sure, Americans overreact...... We aren’t all big babies, you know. I’m sure people have generalized misconceptions about wherever you live.
I love ALL bees i guess that's why i've never been bitten by one they see me as no threat. As long as you respect bees and don't disturb them you will what beautiful harmless creatures they are. Don't forget bees worldwide are desperately fighting for their survival right now from serious threat of extinction.

You should go to Finland! They have many things to do, especially in winter. You can go sleigh riding with reindeer, and there's a hotel made completely out of ice during winter. The hotel is seasonal, so I think in summer they make it look like a sandcastle.

I'm also from Canada (living in Alaska at the moment) and I love the orient (although I haven't been to China or Japan, etc. yet). Same thoughts on Asakusa, I always stay there and always explore the area there, but not the shrine, unless it's nighttime, the shops are closed, I like to go ard the shrine then.

Australian Shepherds are amazing dogs, and whip-smart. But one big caveat: they are VERY active (they're _working_ dogs...). If you don't keep them physically and mentally occupied, they will drive you absolutely crazy. This is why I have a cat (and enjoy _visiting_ my friends' Aussies). ;)
I know you mentioned Europe as a possibility for the future. If you ever have the chance to travel to Scotland I 10/10 recommend it. I feel like Scotland is really underrated as far as Europe goes. I was fortunate enough to be able to go on a trip to the British Isles and I really fell in love with Scotland, it’s really beautiful there.
I'm glad you didn't discourage people from going to the "touristy" areas. Many of them have a very high energy spiritually or even commercially that is wonderful to experience. That's why a lot of people are attracted to them. Many people don't "spoil" a place, they add to its energy. I left Japan on the NEX in April 2020 and pulled into Tokyo Station to an empty platform--a very hollow and spooky experience. As for Sensoji in Asakusa, I would definitely recommend the temple because it's the oldest in Tokyo. It's also a highly important center insofar as Kannon/Goddess energy goes. Just don't shop on Nakamise (the avenue leading up to the temple from Kaminarimon Gate) as you are right about the quality of much of the merch there. Or approach it from the back of the temple as a local might. I always advise people to read up on the sites they might wish to see and go to ones they're intuitively most drawn to visit. That has never steered me wrong.
If you ever decide to come to germany I'd be happy to show you around :3 I honestly admire your strength and motivation. It takes a lot of it to move to a country where everything is new

My husband and I stayed at the Hoshinoya hotel in Tokyo last year - it was such a great experience - I definitely second Sharla’s recommendation of these hotels! The hotel was very modern, but had some traditional design elements like tatami, and it had a beautiful roof top onsen.
Good questions in this video. I'm also planning to return to Japan in the future after things have settled down, and as my previous trip was in the south I want to include the north next time. I'd recommend Germany as another country to live and learn a new language. I've gone there a few times and have friends living there, and there's a lot of variety in the landscape (it's not all like Bavaria). Glad to see you're doing well.

Agreed on the green tea! I visited Japan in 2018 and grew to love the unsweetened teas. Whenever I see a store in the U.S. selling the Oi Ocha bold tea I basically buy out their stock haha

It is much harder to make friends in foreign country. I am living abroad and I am planning to go back because of this. But it can help you become more independent and self-confident and use this experience when you come back to your country.
It's the only soon to be dictatorship in Europe though. How the government is abusing the power of states of emergency is not very assuring, specially for foreigners.
I love the Hoshinoya Resorts! My mom and I stayed at Hoshinoya Fuji a couple of years ago for Mother’s Day. We had a view of Mt. Fuji right from our room. If you want to have a luxurious stay here in Iwate, you should visit Yamado Inn, 山人、in Yuda-machi. Each room has its own rotenburo, the staff is super friendly, and the food is AMAZING! Everything is included in the price. And if you go in the winter, there is usually at least a meter of snow.

If I were to live in a European country, Italy would be the dream. Such a beautiful country! I loved it. And the people - especially in southern Italy - felt really warm and friendly too. Unfortunately I know Italy has high unemployment even before covid19 so I think it's probably hard to get a job there without fluent Italian

I'll never be able to visit Japan, but one "pro tip" I've learned is to avoid the $30+ fee to view Tokyo from the top of the Skytree. Go to the Metropolitan Government Building observatory instead -- It's free and 202 meters high. (The Skytree view is about 635 meters high, but I'm not sure that difference is worth $30 bucks to most people).

Yeah it's nice. I was there some time ago, before skytree was built. It's nice and I didn't have to wait more than a few minutes to get in the elevator. And as you say, it's free. There are a few other free observation decks around Tokyo.
I visited both buildings and still would recommend Skytree Tower. The view is much more impressive than from the Metropolitan Government Building. I'd recommend visting both. Skytree to see how insanely huge the Tokyo area (including Yokohama, Kawasaki etc) is and the Metropolitan Government Building to get an amazing view over Shinjuku with all its fancy skyscrapers. If you've seen the view of Skytree even huge cities like London don't seem to be that big anymore. :-) Because there are now visible spaces between all the cities around Tokyo you see a sea of buildings where over 40 mio people live. It's really worth paying the high fee.
Enigma Dave I had to go back and find it, but there's a youtube channel called internationally ME, she did a video called Tokyo Tourist Traps in which she goes over a few alternatives to Skytree. Skytree may still be worth it as Michael Muller said.
Funny, I found the Government Building view unimpressive. I didn't mind the $30+ fee for the experience of the Skytree elevator alone. The view (which happened to be the night of a super moon) was amazing. The new Shibuya Sky is also fabulous, and I love the fact that you can catch a sunset from up in the open air. The Mori Tower building has great views as well which are included with admission to the Mori Art Museum (always worthwhile). For 500 yen more you can go to the outdoor level one floor up which I love.
Tokyo Tower is the one that's the cheesiest experience. The best part of it was the little history video of the man who commissioned the idea. Tokyo Tower viewed against the indigo skyline from elsewhere, however, is amazing.
If you want to splurge the views from the Park Hyatt are lovely, too. I spent Christmas and New Year 2017 alone in Tokyo so I gifted myself with some unforgettable experiences to keep my spirits up. I saw an amazing sunset behind Mt. Fuji there while drinking champagne at the winter solstice.

that first few hours in japan is absolutely mind blowing huh, it all becomes very real once you pass through customs at haneda etc :)
so many treasured memories, i remember heading out to fuji and arriving in full deep fog and rain, i didnt care i just walked around the backstreets practically no idea where i was going for a couple of hours just getting soaked and lost in the wonder of such an unfamiliar landscape, theres so many times i can recall feeling so alive on my travels there.. and then you have to return to your own country where everything is so familiar its hard to be motivated to even leave the house most of the time lol

I saw the video of the Seto inland sea. It's been on my bucket list for a long time. If anything, if I can, would be a place I would settle myself in. The scenery is just too perfect in my opinion
I've always been super sensitive to noisy neighbors that years ago, in an effort to not _be_ one, I began watching television with headphones. Now I can't imagine _not_ using headphones or earbuds to watch tv. Not only do you control the exact volume for enjoyment, but it helps to keep you immersed in the story.
Omg, it would be soo cool if you would live in Germany for some time : ) The "typical" Germany you would propably think of is southern Germany, but the other regions are great as well. I live in western Germany, close to the Belgian and Dutch border and it's pretty nice here.

Everyone in America freaking out about the “Murder Hornets”......Sharla: I got stung and the venom was sucked out of my foot. 😂😂😂 this is the content I’m here for.
Jess It does seem you Americans freak out about everything. It’s not a murder hornet, but an Asian giant hornet. The main risk are the elderly of dying from a sting, much like a bee sting from an allergy. Think there has been one death so far in the States and whilst extremely painful, as described here, nothing to freak out about.

Helen Pauls Helen Pauls I would be far more worried about Africanized honey bees than the giant hornets, since the latter seems to not attack unless directly threatened. Also, the main thing people “freak out” about is the toxicity of the venom & its ability to cause necrosis. Never mind it’s just unsettling to have a hornet that large. But sure, Americans overreact...... We aren’t all big babies, you know. I’m sure people have generalized misconceptions about wherever you live.

I love ALL bees i guess that's why i've never been bitten by one they see me as no threat. As long as you respect bees and don't disturb them you will what beautiful harmless creatures they are. Don't forget bees worldwide are desperately fighting for their survival right now from serious threat of extinction.

You should go to Finland! They have many things to do, especially in winter. You can go sleigh riding with reindeer, and there's a hotel made completely out of ice during winter. The hotel is seasonal, so I think in summer they make it look like a sandcastle.

I'm also from Canada (living in Alaska at the moment) and I love the orient (although I haven't been to China or Japan, etc. yet). Rather sad to hear that you don't see yourself there as a permanent resident since you've been there so long. Wherever you end up, I hope you'll be happy and still make videos. 🙋♀️

Same thoughts on Asakusa, I always stay there and always explore the area there, but not the shrine, unless it's nighttime, the shops are closed, I like to go ard the shrine then.

Australian Shepherds are amazing dogs, and whip-smart. But one big caveat: they are VERY active (they're _working_ dogs...). If you don't keep them physically and mentally occupied, they will drive you absolutely crazy. This is why I have a cat (and enjoy _visiting_ my friends' Aussies). ;)

I know you mentioned Europe as a possibility for the future. If you ever have the chance to travel to Scotland I 10/10 recommend it. I feel like Scotland is really underrated as far as Europe goes. I was fortunate enough to be able to go on a trip to the British Isles and I really fell in love with Scotland, it’s really beautiful there.

I'm glad you didn't discourage people from going to the "touristy" areas. Many of them have a very high energy spiritually or even commercially that is wonderful to experience. That's why a lot of people are attracted to them. Many people don't "spoil" a place, they add to its energy. I left Japan on the NEX in April 2020 and pulled into Tokyo Station to an empty platform--a very hollow and spooky experience.
As for Sensoji in Asakusa, I would definitely recommend the temple because it's the oldest in Tokyo. It's also a highly important center insofar as Kannon/Goddess energy goes. Just don't shop on Nakamise (the avenue leading up to the temple from Kaminarimon Gate) as you are right about the quality of much of the merch there. Or approach it from the back of the temple as a local might. I always advise people to read up on the sites they might wish to see and go to ones they're intuitively most drawn to visit. That has never steered me wrong.

My husband and I stayed at the Hoshinoya hotel in Tokyo last year - it was such a great experience - I definitely second Sharla’s recommendation of these hotels! The hotel was very modern, but had some traditional design elements like tatami, and it had a beautiful roof top onsen.
Wireless headset for my TV changed my life. No more trying to lip read movies, lol.

Good questions in this video. I'm also planning to return to Japan in the future after things have settled down, and as my previous trip was in the south I want to include the north next time. I'd recommend Germany as another country to live and learn a new language. I've gone there a few times and have friends living there, and there's a lot of variety in the landscape (it's not all like Bavaria). Glad to see you're doing well.
I’m from germany and your words are so true. Germany is more than just Bavaria. I hate it when people say, german people only wear Dirndl, eat Brezel and Weißwurst and drink beer 😂

Agreed on the green tea! I visited Japan in 2018 and grew to love the unsweetened teas. Whenever I see a store in the U.S. selling the Oi Ocha bold tea I basically buy out their stock haha

It is much harder to make friends in foreign country. I am living abroad and I am planning to go back because of this. But it can help you become more independent and self-confident and use this experience when you come back to your country.

I love the Hoshinoya Resorts! My mom and I stayed at Hoshinoya Fuji a couple of years ago for Mother’s Day. We had a view of Mt. Fuji right from our room.
If you want to have a luxurious stay here in Iwate, you should visit Yamado Inn, 山人、in Yuda-machi. Each room has its own rotenburo, the staff is super friendly, and the food is AMAZING! Everything is included in the price. And if you go in the winter, there is usually at least a meter of snow.

If I were to live in a European country, Italy would be the dream. Such a beautiful country! I loved it. And the people - especially in southern Italy - felt really warm and friendly too. Unfortunately I know Italy has high unemployment even before covid19 so I think it's probably hard to get a job there without fluent Italian
