Machinsts tip regarding the drilling: A) Bolt in 1 stud through the drill base so it takes all the rotating force the drill bit imparts on the workpiece. and if you can, 2) Bolt in another stud with a couple of washers and then a larger diameter washer on top then the nut (basically creating a lip the job fits under, near the axis of the drill chuck), near the drill bit so it catches the workpiece from climbing up the drill on breakthrough. These don't need to be in rigidly, so you can slide them around to suit the workpiece, but A) needs to 'lock out' clockwise movement, so it needs to be at the end of the slot in the base, and 2) I'd finger tight as it's just stopping lift. Just these two alone hugely reduce chances of injury, and take sweet F.A. to put in place. OR!!! ... clamp it ... I guess :D
The best and most important part of building a custom keyboard is making it exactly what you want! If you want the most RGB'd out keyboard, then do it! It's your keyboard, the only thing that matters is that you're happy with it, Jay.
You will LOVE that keyboard. I ended up going down the custom keyboard rabbit hole when COVID hit, and PC parts were either hard to come by or priced obnoxiously high. My first was a Keychron Q1 that ended up with about $400 USD invested into it. From there it just snowballed into 5 more keyboards from different brands and many switches that I experimented with. All of it came full circle when I ended up with a Keychron K2 Pro, the 75% version without Bluetooth, for a daily driver. I also have an Asus Azoth 75% keyboard that I use with a second setup. Keychron is definitely the go to brand for the best all around buy it and use it right out of the box keyboards that are also priced affordably. I will say this much, you will NEVER use that Logitech keyboard again. Even cheap customs blow it away at a third of the price. Anyone that gives you crap about using even a semi-custom, like the Keychron, has obviously NEVER used any type of custom. With the exception being the Glorious GMMK series, which leaves a very bad impression of custom keyboards. All the stuff made by Corsair, Logitech, Razer, and other gaming brands are overpriced garbage. The Asus Azoth and Corsair just released a 75% keyboard that are actually really good, but they are still a tier below the true custom brands.
I can confirm this. I had Logitechs for many years. I drowned my second G512 earlier this year (drowned the one before as well, go me), switched to customs. It's a completely different, and better, universe when compared to the flashy gamer brands. I have a Rainy 75 and it's the best keeb I ever had.

I purchased the same one as jay a few months ago, though I got it online so bare bones was available. The Keychron Q6 Max was my entry into mechanical keyboards about 3 months ago :) I'm loving it so far and also changed out the keycaps for a cherry profile set (which is MUCH easier to type on compared to the included set). The extra F13-F16 keys and the knob are great for content creation and editing too; I ended up setting one of them to toggle between headphone and speaker output for checking sound quality in multitrack, and you can even bind them to handy functions in Premiere such as "replace with" etc. Honestly so happy with it and it has already had most of the mod work done to it by the manufacturer - though WISH we had a Microcentre in Australia! "Weirdest power brick" ... guess you've never used Dell laptops because it looks identical to the ones in every office I've worked in for the past 10 years. 😂
Hey Jay in the start of the video you said the tables were "Custom made out of walnut" I wanted to let you know what you got was not solid walnut, it was Oak wood. Walnut and oak are 2 different species. Oak is normally white, or red. while walnut is brown. The tables in the video are oak stained brown to appear somewhat like walnut, but it is not walnut. The grain structure is oak 100%. If you just meant to say it was walnut stained, then your good, if it was supposed to be solid walnut you need to talk to the company because that's NOT what you got.

Shure recently came out with the Nexadyne mic. Used it in a concert hall, and does it have great ambient rejection (can knock a drum set down by half in the vocal mic). Not as forgiving for those that don't know how to use it (get too far away) but for those that know proper mic control, is an amazing mic. I currently use it for my desk.
Keychron was my first board and they are great. Once you find the right switch you like you will love typing on it rather than the out of box retail boards.
I wish I was closer .... having stuff made like that and the way you assemble gives me a headache.. I was a custom furniture / cabinet maker for almost 30 years. I think it could have been made to, not only, fit that room better, but fit the three of you better. As an extremely long subscriber / viewer I would be more than happy to help and make sure it is done right.
I love my Q3Max. I bought it BECAUSE of the keycaps. I didn't [think] I needed the wireless, but I really dug the keycaps, so I overspent a little. Now that I have it, I am using the wireless. As an aside, I was never interested in wireless peripherals because I didn't want the batteries to die / need recharged like mid gaming. I have been using this for 5-ish months and as I type this is literally the first time the "low battery" light has come on. So, that's pretty good and exceeds my expectation there.
You'll have to flash a mod to the Keychron keyboard so you can use SignalRGB for that keyboard. A Crystal keycap may be a little much, but they're fun!
The amount of brackets you need depend on the material of the countertop, plastic laminate is 42", solid surface is 36", 2cm and 3cm stone vary from 30" to 24" depending on thickness of material
Hopefully the podcast will bring in more sponsors since the channel views are dropping for a while now, which I feel is the main goal for the podcast, It’s just so many podcast these days but anyway, hope all goes well.
Custom keyboards are a stupid rabbit hole. I bought a Corsair K95 RGB Platinum a few years ago. But wanted to change the switches. So I ended up de soldering the switches, adding Cherry MX Greys (RGB), changing the springs to 200g, lubing them, added foam padding per switch, added rubber O-rings on the stems and then soldered the switches in. Then I got a double shot PBT pudding key cap set because the OG were breaking from the age and spring changes. I absolutely love the keyboard now. But yeah it's a stupid rabbit hole
Keychron Q6 are more than fine Jay, they're well made, but beware, you'll be tempted to try alice boards and Q60, and you'll be right to, they're awesome.
Keychron is great! My first “custom” keyboard was a pro series Q model and it was fantastic. I would probably swap the brown switches out though, Gateron Baby Kangaroos or some TTC silent Bluish Whites are excellent tactiles.
$3K is totally reasonable for those desks. Real wood is expensive. Hand-made is expensive. They're simple but look very well made. I don't think you should have any buyer's remorse. Feel good about yourself, Jay. :)
I largely prefer the low profile keyboards. They are much more comfortable. I use a keychron K3 V2 i have lubed the switches and added tape under the PCB now it's silent and the noise is pleasant.
I've got the same keyboard, though I ordered online so the bare bones version was available to me. Different switches but it has been solid for a while and after having to replace each of my previous keyboards due to failing keys, the quick swap for switches is nice
6:28 Just leave the 3.5mm to 1/4" adapter in the 1/4" headphone socket all the time. You'll always know where it is and it won't walk away. This doesn't trigger headphone detection since just the adapter won't make a circuit.
Keyboard wise I have a really similar Story to Jay, got the 915 lightspeed also a near decade ago. I however was lucky enough to test plenty custom keyboard as my brother is into them. And I then found out about HALL EFFECT, now I have ( since I also need a100% layout) 1x 75% Keychron Q1 HE ( there are similar options) And in addition a keychron Numpad ( that also included Macro-keys like the 915 had. 10/10 would recommend. The Hall effect is sooo awsome
If you're an actual typist then the keyboard is one of the most critical parts of your setup. It's hard to determine if you really like a keyboard until you use it for a while. That's why I have a stack of multi-hundred dollar keyboards I don't use. My favorite is the Das Keyboard expect that it's not LED and I game in the dark. They have an LED version but the last time I looked it was out of stock.
Keychron is a great entry point for fully assembled custom keyboards, sometimes people argue they are overpriced but they are pretty good for the features and materials and ease of assembly. PS. I ordered Pie partway through this video and that is your fault.
As someone who lives in the Netherlands i can't believe people actually wait months for their delivery. Everything i ever ordered online has literally been delivered the next day. The only thing i had to wait for was a phone i bought that came from China, but even that only took a week.

$3K is totally reasonable for those desks. Real wood is expensive. Hand-made is expensive. They're simple but look very well made. I don't think you should have any buyer's remorse.
Feel good about yourself, Jay. :)
Quite an interesting ad for bridged sense wires at 0:48, with all the burning connectors in mind.
I’m so excited for RTFMs return. I’ve missed y’all’s podcast
I largely prefer the low profile keyboards. They are much more comfortable. I use a keychron K3 V2 i have lubed the switches and added tape under the PCB now it's silent and the noise is pleasant.
Keychron are my favourite. tried so many different keyboards and my typing just feels so much smoother and accurate
I cant be the only one that would kill to be a part of this team. So dope.
Keychron makes incredible quality boards. I got one of their cheaper options for my wife. She uses it for work and loves the thoky sounds.
Don’t worry jay, Dats a good keeb. Nice choice.
I got a Keychron keyboard just recently and I absolutely love it.
The chaos is real!
I just got a set of Pudding Keycaps for the RGB factor and I love them
damn the background of the video still got me stoked for RTFM but then i saw the length and title and was slightly bummed... but still excited!
Keyboard wise I have a really similar Story to Jay, got the 915 lightspeed also a near decade ago.
I however was lucky enough to test plenty custom keyboard as my brother is into them.
And I then found out about HALL EFFECT, now I have ( since I also need a100% layout)
1x 75% Keychron Q1 HE ( there are similar options)
And in addition a keychron Numpad ( that also included Macro-keys like the 915 had.
9:59 didn't realise you had to hold it that high 😮😅❤
11:52 freakin Nick in the background when Jay says the table setup cost around $3,000. 🤣
I just got a KeyChron K5 Max a couple weeks ago as well. Really liking it so far! I'm tempted to get the Carbon keycap set from their website...
Keychron is a great entry point for fully assembled custom keyboards, sometimes people argue they are overpriced but they are pretty good for the features and materials and ease of assembly. PS. I ordered Pie partway through this video and that is your fault.
RTFM season 3 it is been waiting for this always relisten to the old eps of the podcast my always enjoy it
As someone who lives in the Netherlands i can't believe people actually wait months for their delivery. Everything i ever ordered online has literally been delivered the next day. The only thing i had to wait for was a phone i bought that came from China, but even that only took a week.
9:58 Phil reaching to film Jay at eye level
