Thanks Neil!, would you believe the exact opposite weather is down here!!, winter and rainy, plus I have 4 days off,so I spent two days filming and editing! There you go..LOL. Thanks for watching, cheers Gregg
Thanks mate, this clip took 3hrs to upload!!, part 1 took 6hrs!!!!!! I look forward to seeing your "tuned" loco !. I appreciate the kind comments sir! Gregg:-)
Way to go. Back In the 80's railfanning EMD locos, I loved that 645 turbo whine, Especially notching up before the train starts to move. Gregg you did your homework on those locos, they take me back track side. Thanks for the eye and ear candy. I need to get off my bum and start programming. Thanks to you I will soon.
Fantastic! Love that realism, they just barely crawl. Those BN SD40-2's look amazing running like that. Gotta love DCC eh! Great way to sum up part I with "the proof is in the pudding part II". Excellent video! Thanks for sharing Gregg.
You are so right !, Tsunami are set for the average person to run out of the box, but they are designed to be played with to get the best performance for each loco ..Like a good woman, they respond well if treated right and given the right touch! Arrrrrrrrrrgh!!! Love your work sir. Cheers Gregg
I just keep coming back to this series! You Sir, truly are the Trendsetter!!! 👍👍 I noticed new things.... One, you get MUCH better quality wood than we get in the Colonies! That's some of the cleanest looking plywood I've ever seen. *Maybe* ours was that good, back when I was a boy in the late 60's. Second, I didn't realize just how much track you've crammed into that small Shed!!!! You're definitely set up for maximum runs. Third, with your programming figgers, it's exceptionally nice how you actually have to RUN your trains!! As opposed to merely setting a speed step, and watching it go. Cheers my friend! Carmine 🚂
HI Les and thanks for the comments!, The Yanks sure know about customer service and that makes a big difference, something we need to learn down here? Once you get the hang of programming Tsunami's, you'll love em!...LOL I like their "drivability" aspect, meaning you can operate them as a real loco and get realistic sounds . I just got a pair of IM Gevos from model Train stuff, on sale for a steal!, I'm filming a speed matching video for them this weekend. Thanks for watching, cheers Gregg!
The dynamic braking Sounds Great! I thought I was on the top of a "cut" watching those 3 fall down that hill! The -2s where Cool! Also, Looking forward to the wiring video, thats coming up! Thanks again for sharing!
Thanks for a couple of very informative vid's .I'm one of those 3000 Aussies that buy from them and I too have a lot of money invested at model train stuff LOL. I buy for my group as well so as to save on the postage. They look after me like gold. I haven't had a lot of success with Tsunami and am now going in to have a play with my GP15-1 Cheers Les
Another great video and very informative. Gives me a really good starting point for our club engines, all Kato's with Tsunami sound decoders. Thanks Gregg
Thank you ! It makes a big difference to how they sound and operate. Have fun with all your Kato's !! Let me know when you have some running. Cheers Gregg
Thanks very much Neal!, The "notch 7" refers to speed step 42, I leave the notch setting at the factory default of 7, so every seven speed steps, you get another notch! ie, 0-6= notch 1, 7-13= notch 2 etc. I wish they had a throttle with a small lever divided into 8 notches!!, that would be cool, as far as I know , you can't alter the display to show notching! Glad your liking the videos! Cheers Gregg
great video, now I am going down to the layout to update some CVs, problem, it is great weather here, long weekend, not really the best time to be inside! keep the videos coming!
Nice work! Your SD40-2s sound like real SD40-2s in acceleration. Turbocharged EMD prime moverss seem to be "quieter" than GEs of any vintage, so I will take that into account when I fiddle with my sounds. Thanks for sharing your ideas and results.
Thanks for the kind rap!, I wish I was Stateside back then, but a few Dash-2 are still around so hopefully I can catch some next year when I visit! They do sound better on the layout, the camera misses a bit due to the low volume . Glad you liked it MTS',cheers!
Thanks Gregg!! for the info on the Radius...as always very sharp, I believe it is about time for Lord Stanley to do a video on train operation's...lol...
truly realistic sounds all by properly programming the decoders. This is what I have always complained about dcc. but this is realism. I watched part 1 first. got it. NICE!
+Mark Hayes Thanks Mark, glad you got something from the videos! Its all about balance , not volume so turning down the prime mover sound will make all the other sounds easier to hear and adjust. Cheers Gregg.
G'day Gregg, just finished watching part 14 of your layout, looking great. Thanks for these programing videos, I'm learning a lot. Just a quick question, you changed the speed steps to 128, but in another video, you were testing a couple of locos on a train and mentioned that you were in "Notch 7". Is there a way to change the display on the power/pro cab to show notches or do you just divide 128 by 8 to work out what notch your in? Thanks again Neale
Thanks and your welcome! The Dash 2's are my favourite sounding locos!, I've since adjusted the EQ for the speaker ( see Erik Fiske's videos) and they sound even better now! Cheers Gregg
Definitely!! Oooh baby 5 Kato's on a heavy CP unit potash just like in the Rockies! They will look saweeeet running like this! Thanks again for sharing your learnings! Shall we say you got your pHDCC? :D :D :D
LOL, no worries Dave, that's why we're here! The lower level main line will have two C/B''s and the yard will have it's own due to the high chance of a run through when switching! The helix will have another breaker for both tracks and the upper level will pretty much marry the lower level. There are 4 auto reverser's on the layout so far(all Digitrax) and they work really well, I don't like the combo reverser/breaker units as I prefer them separate!. A wiring update is on the way. All's well!!
Thanks very much Nick!, most of my rolling stock is bought from the US, especially since the dollar went up!, most of the locos were got from "Internet Trains" or "Model Train Stuff" and also "Go Hobbies". I also got a few from sellers on Ebay, all new Katos and no problems so far. Now that the dollar has dropped I've cut back ..LOL I went a bit crazy!!!! Gary at Model Railroad Craftsman, has good prices on Tsunami decoders, similar to US prices. Hope this helps, cheers Gregg
Thanx so much, Gregg ! Thats the reason, why I love the Internet ! Both are the same religion or hobby haharrr but lived more than 10.000km away from each other, nonetheless connect !
Gregg: I know you are going to get tired of my Questions!! but how many different districts do you have on your whole layout?, and how many circut breakers and Auto-reversers are you using for the whole layout if any.?...hope all is well...thanks...Dave...
Thanks for part one and part two of programming Tsunami decoders. All my locos have or will have Tsunami 2 decoders in them. Im having a hell of a time trying to figure out how to program them. CV's 17-18 I just don"t understand.
Thanks Jim! CV 17 & 18 should be done on the cab when you set up the throttle, it's really easy on NCE cabs. It will say do you want forward direction, what speed step ect .You want fwd direction , 128 speed steps with extended address. CV 17 & 18 are automatically adjusted when you change CV29 , which is the throttle set up , and you set CV29 to a value of 50 . I do explain it better in the video. Cheers Gregg.
Where thinking about doing the realistic operation on our engines here thanks for showing us how to do it. And your welcome for Subscribing! Good luck on the layout!!
Thank you very much Ben!, imagine what we could have with better drivelines???. I have another 7 Dash2's awaiting decoders!, that'll be sweeeeeet! Now Ben , I wait to see your CP units running like that>LOL Cheers Gregg
My sister lives near their store in Maryland so I just get her to pick stuff up for me when she comes up here to visit me. LOL I have order a ton from them as well. I know the BNSF ES44ACs by Intermountain are on clearance. They told me they have 3000 customers from down under.
Your bench work is one of the most complicated I have seen, Lol! It looks great, quality work. Now if I can get my uncle to do the same thing, (not as complex though). =) Your engines runs perfectly it as should. I will definitely implement some of your settings to further enhance the performance of my engines. Thanks for the great video.
Thanks Maurice!, It is a bit overboard in some places, but I like a solid foundation for the track. Tell your uncle to use the "6 P's" to make sure it turns out right..LOL. (proper prior preparation prevents piss-poor performance). Glad to be of help to get the best out of your Tsunami's!! Cheers Gregg
Is the sound Decoders from Soundtraxx Tsunami PNP or are they Econami PnP? Is speed matching two loco's possible if they have different versions of soundtraxx i.e Tsunami2 pnp and an Econami pnp ???? I have Tsunami2 in one loco and I have an Econami in another loco and I am wanting to speed match them together. Can you show a how to video on how to speed match loco's with different Soundtraxx decoders?????
Hi Donald, All Soundtraxx decoders play well with each other! To speed match easily , just change the forward and reverse trims, CV66&95. This will alter the max speed and help match the locos . You have to unlock the speed table first , with CV29 . I do have a video on speed matching, but I will be doing a new soon , with my "CV Shortcuts" video series....so stay tuned! Thanks for watching. Gregg
Gregg i have 2 broadway SD 40s with the paragon 2 sound decoder i cant get them to run smoothly i have tried resetting to factory defaults altering start and mid CVs as well as setting the top speed but all to no avail they both run ok at a crawl or when hauling a number of wagons ,but the locos on there own are anything but smooth nothing like yours i have contacted Broadway but not much help they just advise reset to factory default , would your settings work ok with the Paragon. Will do.. Thanks Gregg
Thanks , I see them written different ways I'm never sure which is the correct one!. Yes , Model train Stuff has lots of my money...LOL.

+Tony Leighton Hi Tony, I'm afraid I have no experience with Paragon 2 decoders. I f you can adjust the back EMF I would try reducing that? I f they run ok by themselves up a hill, then it may be gear slack in the drive train or over greased gears, I have a few Kato SD40-2's that were a little jerky by themselves on the flat when new, but it was just the loco "floating" on the gear slack and on a slight grade they are fine. You can try my settings and see what happens, or better still put Tsunami's in them..LOL
Cheers Gregg :-)
+Tony Leighton - I've had limited experience with them. If they're QSI decoders, you're in for a LOT of fiddling, and it may end up being futile. Sorry mate, just poor programming from the factory.
I had a BLI SD40-2 replaced *twice* for the same problem! At start or stop, no matter what setting, the loco would make a little "bump". Actually similar to when you hit ENTER after setting a CV. It always jumped. The TWO replacements jumped!!
I finally gave up! Although I've heard from several sources that Paragon 3 is considerably better. I just stick with Tsunami, TCS, or Lok-Sound decoders. They're just the smoothest!
Gregg: How long does it take to get around your layout with scale speeds???
About 30 to 45 mins Jon, depending on the speed and which route you take.
Good video Greg. The leading locomotive is actually a Atlas made engine its a model of the Dash 840BW aka B40-8W. modeltrainstuff com has got good deals on trains.
One thing that I noticed right away in this video is that the little spit of air that diesels do sounds a bit too loud. That maybe your video recorder but I am not sure. Just thought I'd mention that in case I am correct. May want to drop that down just a little.
captainbill12 It is less obvious in person, as you say I think the camera picks up the high frequencies better.
