  • Lark Calling Sound
Larks, belonging to the passerine bird family Alaudidae, exhibit a cosmopolitan distribution, with the highest species diversity found in Africa. In North America, only the horned lark occurs, while Australia is home to Horsfield’s bush lark. Larks inhabit various habitats, often favoring dry regions. When the term ‘lark’ is used without specificity, it typically refers to the Eurasian skylark (Alauda arvensis).
Similar to many ground-dwelling birds, most lark species possess elongated hind claws, providing stability when standing. Their plumage is often streaked brown, occasionally featuring bold black or white markings. Their subdued appearance helps camouflage them on the ground, especially during nesting. Larks primarily feed on insects and seeds. While adult larks mainly consume seeds, all species feed their young insects during the initial week after hatching. Many larks use their bills to dig and uncover food. Some have robust bills (as seen in the thick-billed lark) for cracking open seeds, while others possess long, downward-curved bills, ideal for digging.
