My mother still has a 32 inch Quasar from 1996. I recapped it and did the best I could to give it new life. Quasar was a sub-brand of Panasonic/Matsushita, btw.
my prized possession is a Sony 34" High definition CRT with an HDMI port.. i have it in storage it weighs 200 pounds the picture is still ULTRA Bright and image quality is crisp... the Sony LCD SPVA panel 178 viewing angle 8ms panel is still working great from 2008..
That GameCube haul was amazing! It's especially rare since it took place during COVID closures where retro video games saw a huge spike in prices. I'm really enjoying your content. I've found that I enjoy retro video games, CRT TVs and soldering. Your channel helps immensely with that passion. Keep it up!
I don't really know what they are going for, but I own 2 of them and still have all my games, overlays and boxes. I honestly don't think that's too much money. They are 40 yrs old, have a built in vector monitor and the best controller of that era. I've paid more than that on single comic books. The Vectrex is awesome.
I got an amazing deal a month ago with a nearly mint condition Vectrex, in its original box for $700, and then got 20 OG overlays for about $40, and a vecmulti cart, all for about $900 total. I thought it was a steal, because $700 Vectrex’s are out there commonly but usually in rough shape. $1200 seems kinda high but for a good quality one, I think that’s the market now
12:15 I Love how you mention StarFox 2 with the box, saying that if it's unopened it would be much pricer, while in fact, StarFox 2 never came out officialy back in the day, what they are selling here is just a bootleg/cartmod, they sell for 60-100 bucks on ebay depending on box/manual quality ;)
18:06 The Samsung Slimfit was Samsung's last desperate bid to keep their CRT manufacturing plants relevant in 2007 during the shifting LCD market as consumers were most impressed with the slim form factor of LCD tech. I once read a white paper that Samsung had to create 3 separate patents for the deflection yoke assembly to make it that slim.
Hehe the super and ultra slimfit of the lg and samsung both iirc in the hd series had 2 hdmi ports even... and even at up to at least a 30 inch screen though reportedly have a notoriety for being prone to a "Pincushion distortion effect" problem with the screen
I found a Toshiba 20AF44, a RCA truflat with dvd player, and a 32 inch Sony Trinitron I found all three within a few blocks of each other during a recycling event in a small town. Benefits of driving a school bus route finding all those CRT’s
Superb video! Enjoyed it (great filming and editing). It looks like I missed all those great retro shows this year. I just wasn't aware of them, I guess because I've been living in the country not for too long so a lot to learn yet. Gonna visit next year for sure. Thank you for sharing.
I use an old Phillips CRT HDTV for retro. It's like 150lbs! But everything looks so good, even newer HD consoles. I want a PVM sometime. PS: Greetings from New London Connecticut
I haven't been able to travel to these types of events for a couple of years now, Can't wait to go back. Hopefully one day I get to meet you in one of these events and learn more about CRTs in one of your classes.
WOW! Would a place this was to see from you Steve. So many goodies to see and those great games to play. Thank you for sharing this with us Steve. Hope you had a blast while you were there bro. 8^) Anthony..
Nice, cool video man :) Thanks for the vlog of it. Holy crap! That GameCube games haul you had in 2020 haha. TTYD, Colosseum, Melee, Sunshine, Sonic Adventure DX, Double Dash, Animal Crossing... some great games + expensive ones there nowadays. My grandma has a 32" native 480p/1080i Philips HD CRT kinda similar to that SD one there. I picked it up for the cousins to play Wii/GC in the basement lol. It has the top control also. It's a 32PT830H from '03 I believe(that one was a later-year Magnavox), and it doesn't convert/upscale to 1080i automatically or rasterize the 480p signal in a 540p frame like the Sony HD sets do and most all JVC HD sets. Panasonic, some Philips, some Toshiba, some Samsung, and the Hitachi HD ones do that native progressive 480 👍 That Sony FS at 26:45 was a FS100 👌 You can tell the difference on the larger FS100/120/170 because of where the lettering or words are on the chassis. I don't have one, just something I've noticed. I liked seeing those old JVC's and that Panasonic, good stuff 😄
I juat picked up one of those toshiba flatscreens with the vhs/dvd combo. I was very disappointed to see it didn't have s video or component but it was super cheap locally. Still on the lookout for something with aome better inputs but we'll see. I got 2 to trade or sell towards it but they're getting rough to find
At 19:18 what makes RCA TVs particularly good for arcade cabs? I tried to see if I could search on your channel for info on that but I didn't find anything.
Laserdisc players are really interesting pieces of hardware to use. I have one (with SCART output) and beside a faulty disc tray it's working perfectly. If only it was able to play DVDs...
Good point, though the mixed-disc machines were analog/digital compromises, right? Give me a proper vtg LD player, even over composite... old-school high-end audio-video BLISS!!
Goodwill saves all the cool stuff for their online shopping store now . The only thing goodwill has going for it now after lockdown is that either they don’t want to ship something heavy and they will put on floor or that low paid workers don’t care or know and will put anything out
Good to see multiple CoreGrafx. Both the PC Engine and CoreGrafx had RGB out, which gives amazing clarity on a CRT. You were a little rough on the Videopac (Odyssey2). It has a friggin speech module on it! Too bad it isn't the G7200, as it has RGB out as well.
This was an amazing video! I just started my interest in CRTs and it was great seeing so many high end CRTs in one place. I also wanted to ask if you have any favorite brands or models for CRTs you could recommend.
I just picked up a 20 inch Symphonic its a CWF203 i have the service manual I just stumbled across this RGB Modding after getting it home and now i'm debating which screw driver to sacrafice to start tearing this down, any chance you could tell me if its a good candidate based on the schematic for an RGB mod i'm seeing on the board schematics all the things that i'm hearing is required for a mod i've done my share of console modding and restoring and soldering etc re-capping electronics etc.. so i'm excited to try it.
I have the one with the strange channel changer on top in my Game room, its a Phillips in the UK and Magnavox over the pond i think, but the same TV but i have RGB Scart input instead of Component.
All those CRT televisions, and not a Mitsubishi in sight. Maybe they weren’t very popular in the US. I love my Australian PAL 78cm Mitsubishi DIVA CRT (from 1993?). And where’s the ColecoVision? Lol.
I've got a Sony PVM 2950Q that when you first turn it on the image bows at the bottom for about 1minute and them comes right. Any idea what could be causing it? Once it comes right everything looks really good but just worried that something might be failing. Thanks for any advice on this.
More than likely the deflection capacitors are bad and they get better once they warm up. It needs to have the deflection block checked and possibly rebuilt
@@RetroTechUSAHope I'm not being too intrusive but do you know where the deflection capacitors are inside these 2950Q PVMs? and by rebuilt do you mean all the capacitors replaced on the deflection block? I do have some pictures that I took of the inside but not sure how I could send them to you. There is literally no one in NZ that can fix these errr
Some nice CRTs, not that I dislike Composite but was hoping more of the consoles would use S-Video or Component. But then again I live in NA and so many TV manufacturers weren't very ambitious with the AV ports here lol. 24:20 That is a harsh assessment of a whole generation of gaming, I think every older generation of gaming will go through this apathy even the NES which is next in line for being considered dated ijs. ;) I agree about what you said about awareness for CRTs and CRT repair since it's become a divisive topic for some gamers that I think can only be remedied with knowledge instead of misinformation. :)
@Retro Tech You need to pick up a Hitachi 32 or 36 UDX10S if you get a chance! Great, interesting TV's. 2001 early-HD sets, also built differently than most sets I've opened up. They are curved as opposed to flat(so usually better linearity), but they are also 4:3 HD. And they do native 480p/1080i, good for 6th gen consoles & up. Plus they properly line double 240p signals with little to no lag instead of converting to 480i and upscaling to 1080. Also, the 32" I got only weighs 113lbs which is pretty light for a 32(curved or flat). I picked one up some weeks ago and need to fix convergence up a little still. They can also be sensitive to magnetism/purity issues I've read & researched, luckily I've had none really with mine. But it's great otherwise! Here's a little imgur album I just put together on mine: imgur.io/a/4y5TlUL
I thinked my CRT LG Slim Flat TV sucks, now i think not only mine, i need to find best CRT with component in, but it's all dead or broken. Only my local called "Rubin" works perfect, but with RGB by SCART and mono sound, and hey it's 21", that not bad at all. But it is dead a 2 weeks ago, i ordered new FBT, i hope i fix it, make a sound outa RCA stereo to AIWA amp.
Speaking of the Vectrex. I have one that needs repairs. No image to the tube and cart port isn’t working. Would that be something you’d be interested in tinkering with? More than happy for it to be used for a video too. Trying to find someone who can fix it 😩 you’re in VA right? I’m in Richmond,VA so likely not too far away from each other
I need someone like you in Germany :( in all of Germany there is no longer anyone who can adjust the old CRT. I have a Sony pvm2950qm several phillips 14 inch, 29 inch sony 20inch thomson 14 inch sharp 14 inches in germany we were lucky that the tvs were already equipped with scart. so all rgb suitable but over the years they would all have to be reset :( The consoles from mit are all modded to 60hz and rgb (if it didn't come with 60hz and rgb) unfortunately nobody does it here and your videos are great but not enough to fix mine for sure. What a great video. I don't think I've ever seen a worse lot of CRT's in my life though. Really does show up how bad a deal the American market got. And no wonder PVMs are so popular there. Also please put that slim fit out of its misery.. man they are the worst crt that was ever made.
Yes, all bland 21"+ beasts with tons of silver paint (yikes!) on composite. I did not see anything I would trade for even my most common one, that I also happened to get as free pickup, a Sony KV-M1450D. And that is the simplest workhorse I own. There were so many gorgeous Sony/Philips sets in the 80's/90's in Europe, but also B&O, Loewe, Grundig made stuff that is really nice looking and well made. The current top spot is a Philips V6620. That TV is the most astonishing one I've ever come across. Would not trade it for any PVM, not even for a GDM-W900
Philips CDI were good before ps killed them off which is ironic as they originally designed the CDI for Sony but Sony dumped the contract and went dvd. The CDI now all these yrs later are rubbish. They just skip Like mad now when u try play a game..they were poorly made..I paid almost a thousand pounds for mine when it released as I wanted 7th guest badly..the best game in the end was burn cycle. I bought the CDI , a plug in (the back) full motion cartridge ,to play the fmv content , without most games wouldn't play. This was almost same price as the CDI itself. Had a few months fun with it.
I've never seen more philips tv's in my life then I've seen in this video, seems like there was an awful lot of cheaper end crt's that made it to this event and then the occasional Sony. I wish there were more Samsungs and Panasonics there, I have a fond liking for those two brands and I think a fair few of their crt's are extremely underrated Also those cheap funai 20 inch flat screens should come with s-video too, my emerson ewf2006 has s-vid on the back alongside composite in the front but those tv's have a common issue where the left side of the screen stretches to the edge. Still half decent tv's though, especially with s-vid!
crazy to see so many retro consoles and CRTs that were brought to an enthusiast expo w/out RGB inputs.. cmon guys!!!! ..and w no clear f&$@s given to geometry and cleanliness either

Yes surely soon only Atari, intellivision ,binatone and the old 70s first wave pong and pong type variations games will no longer be playable..they of interest to us and maybe some kids as we had them as kids but soon the next generation of kids will have no interest whatsoever, to them it will be like one of those Victorian 3d eye view things viewed as the start of TV..cool but who wants spend hours looking thru black n white slides of pics of terrible content and quality. I've never seen more philips tv's in my life then I've seen in this video, seems like there was an awful lot of cheaper end crt's that made it to this event and then the occasional Sony.
I wish there were more Samsungs and Panasonics there, I have a fond liking for those two brands and I think a fair few of their crt's are extremely underrated
Also those cheap funai 20 inch flat screens should come with s-video too, my emerson ewf2006 has s-vid on the back alongside composite in the front but those tv's have a common issue where the left side of the screen stretches to the edge. Still half decent tv's though, especially with s-vid!
Hard PS2 carrying case.
crazy to see so many retro consoles and CRTs that were brought to an enthusiast expo w/out RGB inputs.. cmon guys!!!! ..and w no clear f&$@s given to geometry and cleanliness either

Lol
15:15 noob store and fake collector, has no idea what a pvm is.
Those Goodwill looks more like good business, someone is making a lot o f money from things they get for free
14 inch is too tiny. 21" UP at least. No way this tiny thing.
