    How do you fill this out if your jobs are based on commission? It asks how often you get paid, well if its commission you get paid when you make a sale. There is no option for that. You also don't know how much you're going to make. I've looked everywhere for this and cannot seem to find an answer. I went online and the online tool asks for weekly, once a month, twice a month or biweekly but with sales jobs you don't know when you'll get paid.

    Katie, these videos are great! I tried also the tax withholding estimator video, but I'm too slow to understand that one, so I'm using this video. If we are going to max out our 401k, and we're using the method on this video, should we just use the page 4 chart (higher vs lower income chart) and reduce our income by the amount we are contributing to the 401k? So if we make $80,000 in your example, but are maxing out $19,500, then should we use the row that matches $60,500 ($80,000-$19,500)?

    • @KatieStOresCFPChFCEA
      @KatieStOresCFPChFCEA  3 роки тому +3

      [11:21am PST] @TaxesbyKatie.com
      Hey Morningtide, Interesting question. When you contribute to a 401(k), your taxable income goes down, and so the amount of tax that your employer calculates to have withheld from your paycheck also goes down. I never thought about it this way but it would make sense to use the row $60,500.

By checking the box, your standard deduction and tax brackets will be cut in half for each job to calculate withholding.

    I have 1 more question thats a bit long. In my state if you make over $12,400 you need to file taxes. A few months ago I worked a job where I made $2,500 (after taxes deducted). I then got a job at my school that gives me a 10,000 stipend (no weekly pay just the stipend). Would I be able to check the box that states "This year I do not expect to owe any Maryland income tax and expect to have the right to a full refund of all income
    tax withheld. (This includes seasonal and student employees whose annual income will be below the minimum filing
    requirements)."

    • @KatieStOresCFPChFCEA
      @KatieStOresCFPChFCEA  3 роки тому +1

      [11:01am PST] @SaintOres.com
      Hey Jane, That is a tricky question. Because stipends could be taxable in some situations and not taxable in others. If it is taxable, then people who receive stipends don't have taxes withdrawn to pay for Medicare and Social Security. So you'll have to pay the entire 15.3% withholding tax, both your portion and the employer's portion out of your own pocket. I would talk to the HR department at your school.

Try using the IRS withholding calculator (here's the link www.irs.gov/individuals/tax-withholding-estimator) to get an accurate number of what it should be. If it's wrong, tell the person in charge of payroll to correct it. You might have to fill out another W-4.

      You are unmarried or considered unmarried on the last day of the year.
      You paid more than half the cost of keeping up a home for the year.
      A qualifying person lived with you in the home for more than half the year (except for temporary absences, such as school)
      If you qualify to file as HOH, your tax rate will usually be lower than the rates for single or married filing separately.

      Hey TD, In 2020, the W-4 form was drastically changed. You don't claim withholding "allowances" anymore, and exemptions deductions also were eliminated. Now you use Step 3 to claim your dependents.

      Hey Jenny, The general rule is that if you do not file a joint return with your child's other parent, then only one of you can claim the child as a dependent. So your spouse would omit Step 3.

      In general, people shouldn’t have a tax liability when they file their taxes. You also don’t want a big refund either. But I’m speaking in generalities since I don’t know your tax situation.

    So if I am understanding correctly the higher paid spouse is expected to pay the federal income tax of the lower paid spouse? I honestly don't want my wife to have to withhold for my federal tax each week. Could I simply put the amount needed to be withheld on my w4? ( I'm the lowe paid spouse)

      Agent, Yes, it is possible that some people will NOT have tax withheld. A lot depends on the income level and the family situation. You can always submit another W-4 in the future if you situation changes.

      Hello Exotic Smoka, With a handle like that, I hope you live in Oregon or Colorado... To your question, without knowing your exact financial situation, the amount seems excessive. Try using the IRS withholding calculator (here's the link www.irs.gov/individuals/tax-withholding-estimator) to get an accurate number of what it should be. If it's wrong, tell the person in charge of payroll to correct it. You might have to fill out another W-4.
