    I have a number of different ways I can release a brake to do a slack adjuster. Pneumatic parts are insanely cheap at harbor freight. Every single truck in the fleet has a universal socket on the primary and secondary air tank. They can be filled by an air compressor with an air hose using either an industrial or automotive connector.
    I also have a coupler set up with a valve, guage and regulator. I can attach it to the supply line on the brake pod then open the regulator to release the individual brake then shut the valve to hold it open.
    The beauty of this setup is that the truck doesn't need to be running to release brakes. This makes it easier for me to detect leaks because i dont have a loud engine running to build air pressure. The valve with regulator and guage is also really handy for checking brake pods. Apply air, close valve, check after sbfew minutes. If it looses pressure on the guage you have a leak in the diaphragm thats not audible.
    I also havr a glad hand adapter for releasing trailer brakes.
    -EDIT: I also do not rachet the adjuster to get it in the cleavis. I unbolt the pod and pull it back when removing the slack adjuster and reinstalling it. I don't change the cleavis unless necessary, most of our pods dont have a removable one anyway. Your not supposed to twist the adjustment screw until doing the initial adjustment.

    I couldn't figure out why I couldn't back off the slack adjuster to change the brakes. ... that little pull out vent plug pointer saved the day! Thanks!

      Yes. On some slack adjusters, you don't have to pull it out. I believe that's on the older ones though but don't quote me on that. Glad I could help.

      @@aftersoloActually it's the newer ones with the anchoring tab that attaches to the bolts on the brake pod. The push rod has to be extended in order to turn the screw. You need an OTC 5052 brake slack adjuster tool to release them.

      @charlesbolin7207 You're right. I know on mine, the tab doesn't have to be pulled out to back the brakes off. Mine are new too. The tab does have to be pulled to tighten them though.

    Gday Mate
    Great video, well done. I've got 22 brake boosters and slack adjusters sitting on a crate in my workshop waiting for me to replace, 16 on my trailer and 6 on my truck.
    Take Care Mate

    I have no idea how I got to your video.. I don't drive or work on semis and I can't imagine I'll ever need to change one of these.. but thanks for the knowledge!

    What about automatic slack adjusters? Had a state trooper inspection of a 24ft box truck with automatic slack adjusters, mind you i don't need a CDL to drive a box truck, i just wonder why they do it

    • @aftersolo
      @aftersolo  6 місяців тому

      The ones in the video are Automatic slack adjusters. Sometimes, they don't automatically adjust like the one i replaced in the video, so they'll check the rod travel. Sometimes, they do adjust as they should and there can still be too much rod travel, especially if it's almost ready to click over to the next notch. Some automatic slack adjusters don't click over as often as the newer ones, which gives more rod travel before the brakes are applied. (Just think of ratchets. Some of them, you can barely turn and they'll click. Makes working in tight spaces easier. Some of the older ones, you have to turn a little more before they click) I try to manually adjust my slack adjusters about once every couple of months even though they are automatic. Plus then, I'll know if any are not working.

    So I changed my brake chamber and changed my slack adjuster awhile back . Buttt my slack adjuster doesn’t move when I apply the brakes or release them. What would cause that?

    • @aftersolo
      @aftersolo  3 місяці тому

      Make sure that tab is popped out. If its somehow stuck pushed in, the slack adjuster will be disengaged. Are you saying it's not turning the s-cam at all? If not, then something inside the slack adjuster is broke or your brake chamber isn't working. Maybe the air lines are crossed.

      Tab is popped out but it’s not turning the s cam at all. Put a brand new pre cut chamber on. Slack adjuster was put on a couple months ago. I’ll try and sway it out and see. I aooo the response it’s been frustrating me

      Ok thank you for replying I’ll comment back after I do it. Paid a mechanic and he put a broken one on and seized my brakes been a whole mess so I have been learning since then should have checked so my fault also. I appreciate it a lot

    These aren't called slack adjusters. They're called modifier clevices. Trust me, I've known truckers for years.
