    Another tool in the box from an expert.
    Selecting the equity then correlating the strike price and the delta is a big deal gained with trading experience.
    The “what not to do”portions of this seminar will save money - something not considered by many. Consider that tuition not spent.
    All in all another classic Tony Zhang session.
    Well worth the annual fee for the OptionsPlay site alone. Add in the webinars and this is one of the best values in online trading assistance.

    Watched this video again this morning. Gained more insight after a few more weeks trading options and watching the video again. It's been a struggle for me to fight the temptation of selling shorter dated options to collect a little more yield from the premiums vs. going out to the 45 DTE options. But watching the video again and then comparing to my recent trades, I'm quickly trusting that 45 DTE criteria vs. selling the shorter dated options. Do you think it would be a good video to do to compare why it's better to pick 45 DTE vs. say a one week or two week option and how the Greeks affect options as they approach expiration?

    Your comment about buying out of the money Leaps (at 37:30) misses the mark because percentage gain i.e., Return on Risk (ROR) is the most important metric, IMHO.
    At the $120 stock price, the $20 Leap makes 75% but the $5 Leap makes 100%.
    At the $150 stock price the $20 Leap makes 225%, but the $5 Leap makes 700%.
    Also, just looking at values at expiration doesn't address the profit potential if one is lucky enough to realize a steady increase in stock value immediately after getting into the position. Early stock appreciation capitalizes on the very low theta values in the early life of the Leap and allows you to exit with a high-profit percentage early in the game even though Leaps are thought of as longer-term vehicles.

    I love this strategy bc I love Covered Calls. Imo this strategy is best used if you want to take delivery of the stock and you believe the thesis. If you find a great story, buy a 65-70 Delta call 9 months out, sell 25 Delta front month calls to reduce cost basis. If your story is correct you get to buy your stock at a much lower price 1 year in the future. So focus energy on the "story". This is excellent strategy to lock in a price bc you want to own the stock. I don't see leaps as a trading strategy. I want to own a $100 stock for $50 and have the front month calls pay off the price of the option. Then once you buy aka take delivery at 50, there's a lot of equity built into your 100 shares. Then sell calls until the cows come home 🙂🙂🙂. Summation...find a great story and this strategy is ideal.

    • @joenguyenps

      so say you sell MSFT calls and buy it back for a lower cost. How do you own MSFT? Or is there something I'm missing here?

    • @brianquigley6862
      @brianquigley6862 2 роки тому

      @@joenguyenps I'm not sure exactly what your scenario is but i will try to explain more clearly. When you buy the long option for 9 months you have paid a debit for the call. to finance the purchase of the call you can sell (collect premium) every month for 9 months. Each time you sell a front month call you are reducing the cost of the Long Call. After 9 months most the original debit was paid off. at that point you can exercise the call and take delivery of the stock, with hopefully a lower strike the the current price of the stock, or you can just take nice profits by selling just the Long Call and never taking delievery of the stock.
      sometimes the front month call may be threatened or approached. if that happens you can roll up the front month call by buying to close the front month call and then selling a new call with a higher strike. this is usually a god thing bc that means your stock is going up and the Long Option is gaining value. when you roll up you are NOT affecting your Long Option. They are separate positions.

Top to bottom, I lose 20 vs 20, 20 vs 20, 5 vs 5 $1500 Gain vs $2000 Gain $4500 Gain vs $14,000 Gain What am I missing? Buy a good cross section of an economy and you should do well over the long term. The market wil be high in 10 to 20 years, and significantly higher in 30. It's almost impossible for a company with no debt to go bankrupt. the U.S. is about 50% of the global market place, Pay yourself first. It's time in the market, not timing the market. last year I invested 100 grand in the S&P 500/ an allocation fund (with the help of my Financial Advisor Rita Lynn Evans of course) and made 370k, but guess what? I put it back and traded with her again and now I’m rounding up close to a million.

    Hi Tony, Nice video. What is the impact of Time Value and stock movement esp. if the stock is moving in a small range. For e.g. Fast forward to now 21/11/2021, Nio is trading at $39 and the Jan 2022 is trading at around $2.7 against your purchase price of $23.80 almost 90% discount. So how do you treat such a case. This seems to be a total loss, if you had purchased Nio 100 shares @44, your loss would only be $500-600 and you would be holding 100 Nio Shares with unlimited upside? Appreciate your thoughts please. Thanks.

    Question on the slide about reducing cost basis. You state that you must roll your short calls 2-3 weeks before expiration to avoid assignment. Does that go for calls that are trending to look like they may expire worthless too? Or just make it a rule of thumb to always roll them out? Thanks so much for these videos.

    • @OptionsPlay
      @OptionsPlay  3 роки тому +3

      Yes, especially calls that look like they will expire worthless, paying a few pennies to buy them back and remove all exercise risk. We have seen too many investors over the years think that the call is going to expire worthless, shocked on Monday morning when news over the weekend causes them to have a huge losing position. Not worth the headache over a few pennies.

    • @helsinkistationchief
      @helsinkistationchief 2 роки тому

      Yes, with a longer time frame, you should be focusing on the story/fundamentals as much as the technicals. To avoid buying high implied volatility, a good rule I follow from Larry McMillan is to only buy options that are in the 10% imp volatility percentile or lower for the the last year. As a guideline, these periods usually occur after earnings are announced.

    • @OptionsPlay
      @OptionsPlay  2 роки тому +1

      No, you’re better off turning your LEAP into a diagonal. The short call on a LEAP decays at such a slow rate, it defeats to some degree the purposes of a debit spread. Selling shorter dated calls frequently against your LEAP will generate more premium over the life of the LEAP.

    I'm not sure why he said that exercising your option (if your poor man's covered call get's exercised) is almost never a good option. My understanding is that he's referring to not maximizing the upside of the stock, or does he mean that you'd lose money by doing so.
    Anyone with knowledge please advise -
    Let's say I buy a call for company XYZ which is trading at $103. Let's say I buy 1 call option expiring Jan 2023 - strike 100 for which I pay a premium of $2800.
    In a few days, XYZ is trading at 105 and I decide to sell a poor man's covered-call expiring 8 weeks from now for strike of 130 for which I collect $50. I would do this with the expectation that in 8 weeks the likelihood of stock hitting 130 is rather low. However, on expiry (8 weeks later), if XYZ gets to $132 and my option gets exercised, how much money would I make? Or would I actually lose money in this trade?

      Generally, you would buy an ITM LEAP and sell an OTM call, in theory you could do an OTM LEAP, just understand that it's not a stock replacement strategy.

    Why avoid your short call being excercise? You were pretty adamant. If the stock goes up to my short call, my long call is excercise at a higher price than I paid and I keep the short call premium. Is lock in gains. If I still like the story buy more leaps with the money from my excercised long leap. As opposed to, lock in a loss buying back the short call and then risk stock going down and losing money on the long call? Am I missing something? Letting it excercise let's you reset everything and avoids losses. Am I missing something?

    Terminology is confusing: you are mixing cost basis versus risk ! Leap calls reduces the cost compared to buying stocks but it INCREASES the risk since you can lose all the money if it doesn't go in your direction. In your slides, you say that leaps "reduces risk", which is not correct. it increases risk instead ! A defensive investor should not go for leap calls !
