It’s a beautiful scene in so many ways. My favorite thing about this conversation was the accountability they both shared. Being an addict myself, the number one thing to me beating addiction, is never make excuses on why you’re an addict. It’s a crutch and it leads you to be a user again.
I always felt like Sandra didn’t really act in this scene. That whole interaction on Sandras side felt tremendously primal. We might just see the real Sandra in this moment, pulling from a deep personal experience or even trauma.
This is my favourite scene in the movie and is guaranteed to make me well-up every time. It's so real and honest it's agonising, the tears roll down my cheeks. Listening to it typing this and I'm welling up. But on the DVD commentary the director said that, in between takes of this scene, Elizabeth and Sandra would laugh and joke with the rest as the crew. As soon as they were ready to proceed and he said 'Action' they both immediately reached this level of intensity perfectly and instantly every take. He says something like 'I don’t know how they do it.' You can tell he's so proud of them both x

Watched this movie in rehab. 6 months clean now from pills. I loved that rehab. It taught me a lot and was super comfy. North stonington starlight program for veterans and active duty. Beautiful. Great campus
"...sometimes I'd be walking with my friends and I'd see you, half-a-block ahead...all alone...you were so little." God that line is tough. She's acknowledging that even as a kid, she felt guilty about letting her be alone all those times, and that it wasn't a "normal" thing they should be doing. THAT'S the thing that really stuck with her all those years. Even with all the fighting, the anger, the resentment towards each other, deep down, she KNEW her little sister was always alone, and while she had no responsibility to her (it was the Parents' job and they both screwed up royally), she always felt that she deserved better...she just didn't have the ability to talk to her after they were both messed up from their upbringing.
Once all that anger & hurt goes away, they're left with their broken memories, but they still have each other, and that they always have and always will love each other, no matter how bad it gets. They just needed to hit rock-bottom to finally see that.
I remember watching this for the first time on Netflix last year, thought the film was good example of how people who are addicts struggle to go through everyday without thinking of the first drink to have or taking drugs injecting themselves.
Sandra Bulluck played the part of an alcoholic perfectly 100% accurate description.

This scene really touched me. My sister lives in another state, but we learned to get along better as time went on.
Consider yourself lucky. My sister and I live in the same state and we loath each other.
I’ve got a lot of time for this movie. It has real comedy but it also manages to deal with the messy reality of addiction recovery inside a studio movie format. Sandra is wonderful in it, her first role which showed her ability to play more flawed, difficult personalities compared to what she had done before without taking away her warmth or vulnerability as an actor.

It's pretty much impossible to have that kind of emotional talk with a sibling.
Not really.....it's not easy but hardly impossible. I've had those talks with my own from time to time. It saddens me you think that and that going by the likes on your comment many agree.

We went through a hell of a lot of trauma growing up, I've been done protecting some family names to save face for them.F their public reputation. You're supposed to protect children not put them in direct line of a perpetrator. I have my sister's back. This is a good movie, complicated, kind of like life.
This movie opened my eyes to what added can do to you and your family and I wish more people would be willing to get help with additional and both of them are great in this scene

Lily (Elizabeth Perkins) reconciles with Gwen (Sandra Bullock). Gwen has a brown hair with a tiny ponytail and wears a gray tank top and blue shorts and is barefoot. When Lily reconciles Gwen, Gwen sniffs and cries loud in 7 million tears on her toes. Gwen puts her feet in the pond and cries in 7 million tears.

Besides which, I don't really see the problem with joking about it anyway. I battle with addiction too, but there's no rule that says, "Okay, since you're a addict, you must now be offended by any jokes about it."
Nonsense, if we couldn't make jokes about real issues and problems then we couldn't joke about anything.
Anyway, I wasn't even joking about addiction in the first place, so 'nuff said.
