    I don't get why so much of those clothes aren't either donated to the poor worldwide. I mean think of all the people who actually need them. You can even use them to make tents and bed fillings and stuff. It would be FAR more useful then to just let them pile on.

    • @TheStickinator

      Do you think they care?
      Wrap your head around this. The ship used to transport the clothes from China can use on average 63,000 gallons of fuel per day. That's traveling at about 25 mph.

      Most of the clothes dumped are not what I would call 'Practical' clothing. They are mostly badly made fashion items - the sort of thing that are fashionable one week and not fashionable the next. It's absolutely appalling that this happens, but it does, due to greed and ignorance.
      I only wear clothing made from natural fibres, cotton, wool, etc., and wear them for a long time. I have no interest in what is fashionable. Any clothes I own that wear out or get damaged, get recycled, or, if the damage is slight, repaired. Any that I do not wear for any length of time, and are in good condition, get taken down to my local charity shop. Simple as that. If I buy something new, then something goes in the donations bag.

    The micro plastics thing is frightening. They've two cases here in the UK of them entering the blood vessels of the brain and causing catastrophic effects similar to that of the prions that caused Mad Cows Disease. The NHS here doesnt have the money to properly investigate now, so a lot of people will be thought to have other conditions as the plastic interferes with their bodies.

We're deforesting the entire planet and killing off biodiversity with agricultural monocultures taking the place of old growth forests. Timber industries, farming, charcoal production, none of it is slowing down. We've lost 90% of all insects by volume on Earth in just 12 years. The people who protest this and that claiming to care for the world, but they love their bugzappers! They love their pit mines for cobalt! However Polyester and Nylon is basically different forms of plastic, so it's definitely related.

    • @Sunset553
      @Sunset553 9 місяців тому

      @@sailorstu People who have the resources can wear clothes made of natural materials and shop thrift or consignment stores to recycle. In the past, I had neighbors would ask for the clothes I was taking to give to a thrift store, and they would ship everything to their home country. There isn’t a mass effort to get clothing to the poor in developing countries, though. I guess there’s no big money to be made from it. I don’t have a lot of money, but I’ll pay for one top made of cotton or linen instead of a few tops made of polyester. There are things like medical equipment and computer components which are just plastic and that’s it.
      The only way I know of to cut down on the clear plastic packaging which protects new products on display (like batteries, scissors, make up, tools) is to just not buy stuff any more. Or buy at garage sales or some alternative that doesn’t wrap everything in plastic. My sister saves every glass bottle and uses those for storage. It’s a little late to save us from plastics but she does her part. Cotton, glass, and alternative medicine.
      The Earth is capable of recovering from huge amounts of damage. Some species still exist and recover from what we thought was extinction. I studied just a couple courses of material science and later worked at a company that made specialty materials. There’s big money in materials which can be used in the military for stealth, or in space at extreme temperatures and low pressures for example. There would also be research in making plastics which don’t degrade to the point of ending up in the water system or in animal bloodstream. I haven’t searched on it to find specific journal reports, but I can go look to see what studies have yielded information. It would be complicated due to determining the variety’s of sources of those microplastics. Well, that’s where my ideas go on the relationships of different kinds of improvements of plastic pollution

    The study on Cliff Cave park is interesting but it's important to note that while the cave was closed to park-goers for three decades, it's still an interconnected group of caverns in a karst formation that receives water from the largest metropolitan area in the region of roughly 2.8 million people. Finding microplastics here is of course concerning and alarming, but maybe not startling.

    • @shockwavecity
      @shockwavecity 9 місяців тому +3

      It's also important to note that in all of these microplastic studies, they collect their samples in plastic containers, and test them in labs already heavily contaminated by microplastics. Practically everything you do in a lab makes use of single use plastics.

    • @PhilLesh69
      @PhilLesh69 8 місяців тому

      But microplastics are not the same thing as chemical leeching. Those are two different things.
      Using plastic to contain liquids causes the chemicals in the plastic to bind to the water molecules. Microplastics are tiny particles of broken down plastic.

    I've been arguing that the current farming system isn't sustainable since I was young in the early 80's. Nobody can honestly say I wasn't right, the powers at the time must have been blinded by the $$$$$ to an extent that even their children were expendable.

      $$$$$ is the cause of much of the blindness and stupidity in the world. There's also an element of immediate gratification and expediency that plays a role.

    There's definitely more than 5 man-made earthquakes per year. Due to fracking, Oklahoma was plagued with them seemingly nonstop for a few years. I no longer live down there and can't tell you whether or not it's still an issue, but never in my life had I ever expected that I'd experience an earthquake in the center of the country. The first one I felt was barely over a 3.0 magnitude but that's still pretty scary when you realize that they're literally being caused by human activity. And a bit of a sidenote here, but you cannot see the Wall of China from space.

      You're thinking of Precession, which is a tiny natural wobble - imagine a spinning top slowing down - caused by the rotation of the earth - thousands of years ago, the Pole Star was not Polaris, in Ursa Minor, but Thuban, in Draco the Dragon.
      The axis has been shifted by the sheer amount of water being held back in certain areas, such as China, causing the earth to be unstable. The huge Tsunamis earlier this century moved enough water for the instability to be registered clearly.

    I recycle most of my own HDPE (milk jugs and the like) into plastic hammers, punches, etc. All you need is an old toaster oven (also recycled) and a cheap press. Using old vegetable cans of various sizes (another form of recycling) chop up the plastic into smaller chips, heat to 250 deg F press when melted. Once chewed up from use, process all over again. You can even firm it into bricks to build benches, flagging tiles for patios, on and on.

    This is all irrelevant anyway.
    An MIT super computer predicted that total societal and economic collapse will hit world wide in the year 2040, back in the 60's or 70's.
    And more recently, at least 2 very prestigious universities have revisited that study, replaced the estimated inputs from the MIT study, with the actual historical data.
    And not only was the original prediction confirmed.
    But by adding in the correct data, that was just estimated in the original study.
    Both universities came back with a prediction of world wide economic and societal collapse will happen 3-5 years sooner than the original prediction.
    And seeing as how 75% of the world's population can't even feed themselves without a the convenience of grocery store..
    Humanity won't be a plague or infection on this planet for very much longer..
    Good luck in the cities !

    I have been to the Atacama about 30 years ago. Even back then, the desert was full of wind blown plastic litter thrown from passing vehicles that will never rot away but gradually be ground into a plastic dust by the wind and sand.The same will happen to these clothes.
    The earth is not tilting due to groundwater but the Milankovitch cycle. This is yet another scare story like man made climate change. The earth has natural cycles that are far more profound and powerful than whatever man can do. I grant that the Aral Sae has almost disappeared due to the actions of humans but that is a tiny example of environmental damage in a specific location which nature will eventually reverse if the irrigation of cotton ceases.
