"If/Then" is a contemporary musical that follows a woman as she rebuilds her life in New York, a city of endless possibilities. It's set at the intersection of choice and chance, where the road you take meets the road you didn't.
I love the idea that the whole time he is saying "You don't need to love me" you assume that this is going to be a mutual thing, but then at the end they switch it up on you, and you realize he is saying all of these things because he does love her. That is music theatre at its best right there.

This song resonates with anyone who loved someone and wanted to stay a part of that person's life even though they realized they would never be together.

When I first heard this song I thought it was a lovely sing about loving someone. I niw realize just how sad this song actually is, being about someone trying to convince another that the singer loving them should be enough even if they don't live them back. It's a lovely song, but so heart breaking at the same time. It's honestly quite sad how the character if Lucas clings to Beth, thinking he wants a life with her, and she ends up having an abortion instead. At least we saw his character end up happy in the other timeline.
Natural. He sings like he speaks... a pleasure to listen a vocalist who doesn't try too hard.

Several days ago, he came to my school (Great Neck North) to see one rehearsal of our prodction of Rent. He is a really nice person, and he spoke to us and gave us a lot of good adivce. I respect him so much. He is a true inspiration.

The first time I heard this at about age 21, I loved the message behind the song and found it wonderfully angsty. I played it for my older sister and she said it was really sad, which I just didn’t understand. Ten years later, it’s still lovely, but I now understand her perspective. It would be really awful to willingly go into a relationship knowing that the other person will never be able to return your love.
