I used to work in a museum, and Mitch has it exactly right. Perfect preservation is when all the objects are in a perfect, dark, climate controlled storeroom. You always have to sacrifice some of that to display it to visitors, and how far you go depends on your goals. And keeping something accessible and usable is an entirely valid goal.
1:38 "What would LMNC do ?" -> proceeds to smash through the wall with a hammer.
I found my new mantra x')
Someday I hope to have the opportunity to visit.
Its well worth it. Dont go with anyone who will rush you
Me too. I am planning on booking a hotel in Ramsgate for one night, driving from Germany through the Eurofunnel and then to Ramsgate. Spend the night. When done visiting the musuem then driving all the way up to Liverpool to my final destination. Or I could do this on the way back to Germany. Something like that. Not sure about the exact timing though.
Just get a plane ticket or whatever you need and don't delay. Make "someday" this week and your real life will begin.
@@loopinnerthe I can't fly due to medical reasons. Coincidentially I had to plan the holday for this year. So it will be end of August.
@@annother3350 I spent nearly the entire day there when it was open and it still felt like I barely scratched the surface. Got to run through it all at least and touch and enjoy a good chunk at least.
the explanation 8:00 or so is perfectly fine - the fact that you maintain and allow people to muck about with all things is fabulous...you're doing frickin' great!
Yeah IME there's 3 levels of Archiving.
1. Preserve the thing itself so it lasts as long as possible without any major changes.
2. Preserve the thing so that it works as long as possible.
3. Preserve the memory of the thing by allowing people to try it/play with it.
Preservation is important of course, but fundamentally there's nothing *that* amazing at TMINO that needs to be preserved forever, however being the most hands on with everything and showing how it all works, and making it all work is the exciting bit.
@@DasGanon 100%
@@DasGanon Well said. We can't preserve everything, so why not make it enjoyable for as many people as possible?
A word of warning: You're creating the highest concentration of synthesisers in the universe. Be careful it doesn't collapse into a sonic black hole.
Museum curators world-round have to make these sorts of decisions: access vs preservation vs education vs research. Sam, Mitch, and All: you're doing great work.
100%
i loved the fact when i visited i was able to interact with so many different things! i have developed a love for the suzuki omnichord as a result 🎶
I can't believe you've only got 57.8K subscribers! This channel should have well over 100K - and I'm not criticizing you at all! Also, long time amateur radio operator here (54 years!), cool seeing a bunch of QST magazines in your mix! And the schematics on the shelves? Awesome idea!
How cool would it be to be in LMNC's head and not only know that you can fix any analog synth you lay your eyes on but also be unable to resist doing it, to the point of eventually creating a museum.
It might be helpful to add to your description text specifically how to access the schematic images you uploaded to the "telecoms heritage archives" website you mention at 7:30. I tried to find the schematics and have had no luck so far.
As a young child (50+ years ago) I used to ride my bike to a music store (gospel music company), a large two story building full of anything a musician could have wanted and anything could be pulled out and played. They had a room upstairs with maybe 20 synthesizers and (here's the best part) they even let me, a young pre-teen kid, play with the synthesizers! I will always remember them for that. I went there at least once a week for months and they always let me play with the synths and patiently answered my questions. I learned alot about the workings of them and developed a lifelong love of synths and electronic music as a result.
I follow your videos and REALLY hope I have an opportunity to visit your museum some time. What you are doing will affect many in the same way I was affected as a child and I applaud your fanaticism and energy expended in the creation and expansion of the museum! Awesome!!
It's always crazy how yall always find more space
Their desire for more space is so intense and passionate, it opens up a bubble of spacetime right where they need it.
Agree with what Mitch said about sacrificing a little preservation for the sake of interactivity. One of my earliest memories is going around the Science Museum in London to track down every exhibit with a button.
So much work! Love the passion.
I accidentally started this video with the new Ai voiceover in Italian, scariest experience of my life
I had UA-cam set to English just to avoid that
Great work Mitch 🙂Noticed Sam soon did his roadrunner act and left it all up to you 🤣🙂
Man, I wish I could come visit. And I really need to get myself organised!
Thanks guys. Its always fun to see what you're getting up to.
Glorious! Much love for the Ray Wilson section - my first PCB builds were a (partial) Weird Sound Generator and an Echo Rockit, both of which I still get some good use from.
Professional museum display is just like retail, except the stock never sells and the stock has much longer used by dates....
Love your 'what would LMNC do?!' Engagers persuader.
Can't wait to visit the museum. Must see for the next UK trip.
Can't wait to stumble upon some liners notes with a credit: "this track uses recordings made at "This Museum is (NOT) Obsolete".
Had the pleasure of visiting the museum last year, by far exceeded my expectations, was so many things to play with it was awesome! Just wish i had more musical talent to make use of it. The funniest thing was I was the first in after opening so it was all quiet and I starting fiddling around with the mega drone or something, a couple came in after me and one of them gave me a really dirty look for making an annoying noise with the mega drone, just thought umm i think you might have come to the wrong museum. 30mins later the whole place was filled with all kinds of crazy noises haha
So cool how far this place has come since it started.
1:51 that is so accurate! It looks exactly like "if ai designed a synthesizer"
MUST get there this year!
It's all so amazing and beautiful! Love the collection.
I jave been lucky enough to visit the museum in 2024. I would highly recommend it, so much fun and nostalgia. I proudly wear my souvenir pin badge to work !! Its only a short walk to the beach as well whats not to like. Keep up the great work
Mitch.. you are a hero. How you hang on to all the never ending loose ends and calmly get them all tied up is a mystery to me.
You guys are doing great work. Well done
The cosmos aligns! Thanks for the noise. My neighbor downstairs has JUST put in a noise complaint against me for my dismantling ruckus. She has a migraine... Ah... The freedoms of a warehouse space.
So... some parts of the museum ARE obsolete
Would be lovely if a guy like Jean Michelle Jarre would donate a few million pounds to secure this wonderful museum for ever
It would indeed
It looks like an army of Daleks rolled in there and self-destructed all over the place.
Luv the spirit. It is clear that
what u do fam is quite rare (people can actually play , record etc). But u got the skills to repair, take care of thiese rarities so, all in all (dunno if its engl) it s a great idea. I juts wish somebody near my place would do soemthign like that. Well im not too far away (Normandy,France) but I just cannot move around for sevral reasons. So,well im watching your channels and folks you are an amazing bunch. (oh and i suk at electronics , soldering...or lets say i never ghot into that , but since u uploaded plans i might go for it one day)
8:15 The regular run of how these synths were used back in the day was to modify and mix circuits and devices together. If they were kept pristine in glass cases the authenticity of them would be lost. I believe functional devices should be kept functional.
Looking forward to revisiting in early April, also looking forward to dropping off a little donation
Incredible work! Hopefully I'll be able to visit one day!
🎵Rip it up and start again🎵 Nice to see this museum is getting a bit of extra SYNTH ZONE!! Nice one
i have no issue with adding old schematics of DIY catalog synths as display "dressing" in the DIY synth exhibit. i also have no issue with the schematics being scanned and preserved in an internet archive designed ethically to honor a time and place in history now quite antiquated (which is kinda the point of a physical museum space anyway).....if anything, i'd say take it a step further. DIY from ground up is a little intimidating and daunting and it's hard to get into because the 1st step is to get the parts. that's why from electronics projects to model trains to LEGO sets come with the parts already gathered and put in a premade kit box ready to assemble and play. if there's a way to work it out, a DIY synth in a box from the exhibit would be a great gift shop item.
Good to see the seabro gig machine there in all its Teflon frying pan goodness 😊
1:51 This is what a synth should look like. looks like straight the early 50s haha beautiful
Wow, so much changed now since I visited! Must get over again sometime soon...
Looks great, top work!
Looks wonderful!
10:02 a wild HAINBACH has appeared!
If I weren’t half a world away I’d book a day! That’s awesome!!!
soo cool, everything, what a playground...some day i must come over there
3:48 Paia Fatman! My second 'analog' synth ever :)
this is looking great! i can't wait to come back and visit again this year and try it the gear! yes, please stick a beatsteppro there!!!!!! [~5:45+]
1:50 I think the KORG 700Sm Synthesizer is currently winning the prize for the Synth that looks most like an AI near miss
2:37 "sympth"
2:51 "sympthesizers"
best video cover ever!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I can see so much love sitting on the shelves
build a live unit, so people could visit museum and play live with drum machines bassline and arp or something, that would be sick
Ooh a Transcendent 2000! I still theoretically own one of those, but I think it's in someone's former loft in another country :(
you did the "Hainbach" and some more
Most excellent!
Love this sooo Much
More and more Mitch reminds me of Barry Lewis.Which is a good thing!
loving the LMNC soundtrack
lots of updating going on in the museum !
I desperately want to come visit the museum, unfortunately its a long old drive and a difficult sell to the fam!
was not expecting that spice girls reference 🤣
90% of this channels charm is unprofessional professional repairs.
always wanted some Powertran stuff, always beyond my pocket.
i'll email you after i've had a rummage in my attic (may have some odds n sods to tinker with)
I wonder how many times Richard D James has been in there.
be careful with the LED strips as the emitted UV will degenerate the plastic
ZX Spectrum spotted 👍
Amazing!
How did you start to fund this huge collection?
Patreon and folks visiting! All the links are in the description!
What headphones have you found that give you the best blend of affordable, decent sound and durability with public use/abuse?
A mix. Little Sony ones have survived so far!
U should add a tascam recorder to the setup so ppl can record
I'd love to come for a private booking.
Deets on the website :)
Do you have a Minisonic 2?
Woo-Hoo!! ... I'm famous! 🤪
Brilliant work chaps, it's looking good ...
thanks Peter
home improvement grunt here 00:05
One day!
Cool spot.

Museum Curators !
Just taken me half the video to work out the name!
one wonders if he does anything without filming it
look mum no sam! XD
Does "This Museum Is (Not) Obsolete" franchise?
bro whats the electric bill this place
I hope your not considering destroying the pipe organ area..
Presume you have to worry about fire and safety regs if it’s all open to the public?
The only thing holding us back from exhibiting the flame-thrower organ
@ Does everything also require PAT testing? Must be a big expense with all those elderly electronics!
There's no such zone.
woow so cool ;:) 👍

Hey Sam, I only clicked because I saw your face on the thumbnail. The autotranslated title is absolutely horrendous, does not make any sense. Would you consider not enabling that feature on your future videos ?
Thanks for the heads up didnt realise!
