Last year was the first time I had read Our Mutual Friend and I LOVED IT! I laughed. I cried. I yelled at Dickens. It's a book I want to buy a better edition of, which I rarely do. I wasn't as impressed with North and South and I'm hoping to get to Wives and Daughters next year. Great video. =)
I love Gaskell in general! I ended up rereading Cranford this month. I really should read the two Gaskell novels I have left, but it's so tempting to reread my favorites by her.
Fascinating list. It's surprising how modern in some places these novels can be. My favourite Victorian novels change frequently, possibly with the weather!
I am currently reading Our Mutual Friend, not quite half way through and I love it! While in the UK last month I picked up a nice copy of The Odd Women. Plus my husband bought me an older, beautiful set of the Barsetshire series. AND I am currently reading Mary Barton with Kate Howe's Victober read. It is my first novel by Elizabeth Gaskell!! So you see, this video is perfect for me!! Thank you very much☺
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Mary Barton is an interesting first novel to read by Gaskell. If you like it, you'll probably love Gaskell. I found Mary Barton to be one of her least polished works that introduces a lot of themes which Gaskell explores in more depth in later works. I hope you enjoy The Odd Women and The Barsetshire series as well! ❤️
You have fired me up to read The Odd Women. This is a lovely way to home in on a few great Victorian novels. I am tempted to do a version myself as if it was a tag.
There's a part of Our Mutual Friend that feels sluggish, but once you get over that part the book really picks up speed. I read it last year and I had all of the emotions. I laughed. I cried and I got angry at Dickens. It was a keeper for me. (actually it's a book I want to get a better edition of and keep for my permanent library) I do hope you love the story whenever you finish it. =)
Loved this Marissa lovely to get in the mood 🤗. OMF was my first Dickens (& i too read along with K's uploads albeit a few years later ), i plan to go back to her BHouse one too 💝 THSisters & TOWomen sound right up my alley & will get there- eventually.! . & TBarsetshire novels r really calling me too lol but no series' until i read the ones on my shelf 😅 😊
I just read Our Mutual Friend for the third time this year! It continues to be one of my favorite Dickens. And I’m currently reading The Warden (my first Trollope) and North and South! I haven’t even heard of several books on this list, so thank you for growing my TBR 😁
You have 4 books I haven't read but I will. I plan to read Our Mutual Friend and The Half Sisters next year. I'm reading the Barsetshire series but I've only read the first two. I have so much to look forward to with these 4 books in my future. I have read North and South and I loved it. It may be my favorite Gaskell
Oh how exciting! I hope you enjoy all of the recommendations. It's so hard to pick a favorite Gaskell. Wives and Daughters and Cranford are pretty fantastic as well.
Yey!! I'm so happy you took on this video! Thank you so much :) I feel so rebellious, the moment you said the half sisters is out of print and hard to find that's the one I wanted to read most and find in a store. The rare book hunt is on!
I'm ashamed to admit I've not read any of your five, although I made a brief start at Mutual Friend. Good reviews, and perhaps this will be a spur to make another effort. I saw a version of North and South and liked it, so I'll see if I can't scrounge up a copy. Thanks.
Ooh I hope you're able to get your hands on North and South. It's a fantastic book. What would be your top 5 Victorian novels that you've read in the last 5 years?
@@BlatantlyBookish Thanks for the kind reply. I’m almost ashamed to admit I’ve read no NEW Victorian literature within the last 5 years (that I can remember), but it’s true; all my fictional reading from that period was done when I was much younger. Fortunately, I’ve started watching UA-cam sites like yours, and those of Katie and Roz (among others), and I’m gaining traction. I’m currently simultaneously reading Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, and if I get through those, I’ll return to some Dickens that I DNF’d some years ago. I’d very much like to get through North and South and Our Mutual Friend, too, before I hang up my reading glasses. All your sites are good for cheering us along, with your subscriber greatly benefiting from your love of the subject and your enthusiasm. Since I’d already read The Mayor of Casterbridge and could still recall the story outline, I only checked in with the proceedings from time to time, but intend to read Woodlanders when I next want to tackle Hardy. Return of the Native and Far From the Madding Crowd are my favorites of his, but I only completed them once and that was more than 40years ago.
I love North and South. One of the best Victorian literature books.
I love Anthony Trollope and Elizabeth Gaskell. Thanks for a great video
Talking about favourite books always makes me want to re-read them!

Oh I loved north and south sooo much.. Can’t wait to re read it at some point. Do love wives and daughters too, Gaskell excelled on both of them ❤
I love Gaskell in general! I ended up rereading Cranford this month. I really should read the two Gaskell novels I have left, but it's so tempting to reread my favorites by her.
I really enjoyed your vlog today!! Thank you!!😊
5 of my absolute favourites, too 😊😊

Yea, I hate the word favorite because mine are always changing.

I am so glad that you turned this into a tag! And I do hope you enjoy The Odd Women. It's a really interesting book.
I started reading Our Mutual Friend last year but haven't finished it yet. You have inspired me to finish it.

Yay! I hope you are able to finish it at some point. It's a really wonderful story.

I'm delighted that you enjoyed the video! I hope you get around to all the Victorian literature that interests you eventually. 🥰
I have had The Half Sisters on my list and this video had me buying it from Abe Books. Thanks!
You're welcome. I hope you enjoy it!
Love this video! I really want to get to Our Mutual Friend soon.
You should! It's a phenomenal book. ❤️

What are booktube videos for if not adding to your TBR? lol. I hope you are enjoying The Warden and North and South!

My favorite Victorian novel from last year was Poor Miss Finch by Wilkie Collins. I am intrigued by your list and will look into it.
Ooh I'll have to put Poor Miss Finch on my eventual TBR then. Thank you for the recommendation!
Currently in the middle of Small House at Allington. Loving it ❤️
Hooray!! I'm so excited for you, and wonder what you'll think of the ending especially.
I didn't particularly like the ending but have hopes for the last book in the series:) still 5 star read though!
Love the Odd Women! Just reread it. So good
It really is so good! 💕📚
