I read Eartheater a while ago and was really disappointed. It seemed like an interesting premise but the execution was just terrible. I always love these kinds of videos. I love to hear what you have thought of books that I also have read and I like to use it to review my TBR to see what might not be worth the time.
Oh Scott I was agreeing with you until you got to Held, it was my favourite of the booker list. I really enjoyed Enlightenment too. Completely agree with some of the others. Canberra Writers festival gave me a copy of Bri Lee's Work....maybe you've told me why I got a free copy... I now have to read it ,to decide if I cull it or not.
A rather enjoyed Of Cattle and Men perhaps because I wasn't looking for it to be a horror book. Thank you for warning me off Enlightenment which I might have read otherwise.
I loved Enlightenment. Loved the writing, the story and the characters. The ending was a bit ‘Huh?’ but I look forward to reading more of SP. She’s an exceptional writer of poetic pros. Love that. Also i never read or not read a book based on someone else’s judgment of it but like hearing reviews, such as your own.
I hate mangoes. Here are my mango medicine books: 1. Tremor by Teju Cole 2. The Daughters of Madurai by Rajasree Variyar - I only read 40 pages but guessed both plot twists. 3. Eartheater by Dolores Reyes 4. God of the Woods by Liz Moore - not that horrible but the most disappointing. Liz Moore may well have peaked with her first novel.
Different strokes for different folks I guess... Lots of positive and negative reviews out there for The Vulnerables, so clearly very well written for a certain taste in literature and not so well for anybody else. :)
Ha...my dislike of Bri Lee vindicated! Totally agree with several of these reviews. I am hoping the Booker longlist will be better (and more diverse) this year.
Yes, more diverse! Both in terms of ethnicity and book... And, I'd like to discover a new author or two by following the Booker, I didn't this year. There's a lot that needs improving on this years longlist.
Your channel has been one of my best finds of the year. Keep on!
Scott, you are my favourite curmudgeon. 😂
I love your negative reviews. It gives your reviews balance. Keep it up.
Oh Scott, such a treat at the end of the year! Love the curmudgeon energy ❤
Thank you for another year of top tier book content :) Happy New Year!
One of my favorite videos of the year! Excellent takedowns!
"Kind of like humanity: disappointing" LOL.
Ouch but in the best way. lol Happy New Year!
Thanks, Scott, and Happy New Year!🥂🍾
Happy New Year

Love this video. Definitely not unsubscribing.

I love your candidness! I appreciate you going into detail as to why you didn't like these books.
LOOOOL! I was actually going to write a lockdown novel. Until I watched this video. SO THANKS FOR THAT! 😂😂😂
Happy to have helped you improve your book. 😉😂
I'm sure you could do a good one.
Here for the tea and sarcasm 😂

It would be a boring world if we all liked the same books, so I'm glad that you liked my review even if we have opposite opinions of the book. :)
Your comments were so funny!
*quietly adds The Work to wish list 😂
😂😂
Algonquin table level burns.

You hate Mangoes? There are only two explanations, you've never eaten a good one or you're wrong.
Tremor almost made my video.
I really liked Held, but I'm so glad there's somebody who's as flabbergasted as I am about so many people liking the Messud and the Perry.
There was at least one judge with pretty poor taste... And you can tell which one by checking out who blurbed Messud's novel.
@GunpowderFictionPlot Indeed! Yiyun Li, who by the way also praised the Mukherjee...
Sooooo funny - soooo articulate - love you even more 😂
I'm sad about the Vulnerables as I am a fan of Sigrid Nunez. Hope she does better next book.
It wouldn't take much. 😉
I'm sure she will return to form.
😂😂😂. Ranty Scott.
Did somebody say “Sassy?”
👀
“They need characters” 😅
You do make me laugh!
If I could subscribe twice, I would 😂😂😂
🧂 extra salt 🤣
How did Enlightenment make the Booker list?! HOW?!?! By far my least favorite of the year as well
Definitely points out just how bad the judges were.
Caledonian Road is a book that references Covid restrictions in an unforced manner.
I didn't know Caledonian Road was a lockdown novel! O'Hagan is quality, he is the kind of author who could pull it off.
I would be interested in a good lockdown novel, if there are any
Loop Tracks by Sue Orr - the secret is, it's much more than a lockdown novel.
Hi, I’ve read two which were among my favourites of 2023. Tom Lake by Ann Patchett and Lucy by the Sea by Elizabeth Strout.
I thought The Vulnerables was enjoyable. I read it back to back with The Friend and What Are You Going Through? Among my favourite reads this year.

Orbital could have been on this list.
Finally someone calls out Nunez for her pretentiousness. 😂
Totally agree with your comments on The Work. Truly awful.
Mate - did you know your comments are turned off on your best books video??
@@GemofBooks thank you, will fix that asap.
@ no worries mate, I thought it was odd 😂
