In the US. In place of the instant dashi packet, I use the powder packet from the Maruchan "oriental" ramen you can get at any grocery store. Not the same, but tastes loads better than omitting any extra flavoring.

Looks delicious! My mother (and now I) add benishoga, too. We also use more soy sauce and it is never mushy because we "caramelized" the soy sauce by adding it to the sides of the hot pan, not on top of the rice.

Wonderful dish, and such fun to watch you cook, Shinichi. Satoshi is adorable, of course. ❤As a vegetarian main dish, I often add small cubes of marinated tofu, bok choy or napa cabbage, lotus root or water chestnut, bean sprouts, and so on. Fried rice rules!

I love how playful and outgoing Satoshi was in this video! I want to see more of him like this! And during the can I have a bite moment at the end, I didn’t know if satoshi was being coy or playful or was intentionally holding back the spoon, but I had to rewatch that part again! And fried rice looks delicious and simple to make I’m gonna make it soon!

Oh, spam fried rice is my most favorite fried rice, I make it when ever I have spam, now I need to find some terriyaki flavored spam. I will be making it like this the next time I make it, I would not have thought to put the dashi in it, but I can see how that would make the flavor even better. Loved this video so much Shinichi, you did a great job making this dish, your Okasa is a great cook. So cute seeing how much Satoshi enjoyed this dish. Thanks again, you both are so much fun, bye for now.

Brother! OMGEEE! I make spam fried rice for my hubby, all the time, but never thought to use Dashi powder. I will try that next time. Thank you for sharing! Brother Satoshi, aka “Garrrrrlic Man,” I, too, love garlic in my fried rice. It adds so much flavor. Take care boys! Oh, and thank you for clarifying what flavor Spam you were using. At first, I thought your Spam had gone bad, since the color was brownish, rather than the pink...... ☺️

I know it's not authentic and my Thai friend makes fun of me for it, but I actually like using the Sun Bird fried rice seasoning packets and like a particularly eggy fried rice. I also like adding some hot oil and/or red pepper flake to make it slightly spicy. One thing I noticed not mentioned (that usually is) is using 1-2 day old rice because if it it's too fresh, that can also make it a little too wet/mushy.
