Spinning Silver was the first time I picked up a fantasy novel and saw my own culture in the main character, important to her and lived as thoroughly and authentically as we do in the real world (and it wasn't even about our trauma! It was our joy!). I would have loved this novel for that alone. It was nice that I also enjoyed the fae aspect and the magical elements. Just overall one of my favorite books.
I actually loved both Uprooted and Spinning Silver. I thought they both have this cool element where nature/fae are seen as the villain and while they never change, how the protagonist views and interacts with them does. So the stories (at least to me) are more about how the individuals change and evolve than defeating something external, which I find highly satisfying.
I love how unlimited the porridge over the ever-burning stove is. That house might be so small, but exists on the border and the unlimited porridge is dope! 🤓🥰😂
The whole secret/true name thing with fae is one of my favorite tropes!
I felt so empowered when I finished this book! Glad you enjoyed it too.
This became easily one of my favorite books of all time!
Omg the last line😭💕 I was emotional, this book is fantastic
Yaaay! This was my favorite book in 2020, I LOVE it. I also love Uprooted but I do deffinitely prefer this one and I was super hoping you would enjoy it too :) I actually think Agnieszka from Uprooted is a very well realized character but I get why someone would dislike her. I think part of the reason why I prefer Spinning Silver is just that I like these characters more and I think the writing was even more beautiful. I totally agree that the quiet victories and the female solidarity in this book are amazing (that moment with the "no", I cried). Spoilers ahead:
When Irina uses her limited powers to just spring up on Misnatius and be like "you up already" I thought that was hilarious. Also when Wanda puts her own hand on her head because it reminds her of how her mom used to do it... Broke my heart.
I loved this book too! The Tsar and Tsarina’s storyline was my favorite and made me laugh out loud several times.
I just read this recently and absolutely loved it! I loved the whole Q&A back and forth, as well. When he made the mirror to tell the time of day and made her use her last question to ask for it - I was like "Ooohhh daaang!" Lol. I loved them so much!
Is Minatius still beautiful after the demon leaves him? Does he have any magic left- perhaps from his mother? Is Minatius able to be sane afterward? Are they happy?
Will Wanda ever want to get married? Or will being a daughter and (presumably) Aunt enough?
I love loved the religious aspects of Spinning Silver
And I loved that the girls weren’t victims
coincidentally i read spinning silver just a couple of days ago! i started reading in the evening and couldn't put it down until i finished the entire book at 4am. i loved it so much!! then i picked up uprooted right away and binged that too. turns out booktube lied to me cause uprooted IS GOOD. bc everyone keeps saying "you can like spinning silver even if you didn't like uprooted" i imagined them as very different books but it turns out they're pretty similar and both of them are 5 star books for me (but i admit i liked spinning silver slightly more). i think in uprooted it all depends on whether you like agnieszka - if you don't, everything is ruined cause it's single pov. i liked her just fine. in spinning silver it's easier cause if you don't like some of the characters it's not as bad cause the pov keeps changing constantly - however i found wanda & family perspective so much duller in comparison to miryem and irina so it was almost like a drudge to me to get through her chapters. so multiple pov can also be seen as a disadvantage in that sense.
what i liked about these books the most is definitely the eastern european inspired setting. i come from the eastern europe myself and it was simply delightful to see some of our folklore in these books, and even something as basic as names (btw it's pronounced eerina). i also was very invested in the romances which is very weird for me cause normaly i don't care for them but apparently there's just a very specific dynamic that i like and naomi novik agrees that that is The Supreme Romance Dynamic.
so yeah i'm very glad that you liked it bc i knew you didn't like uprooted and while reading spinning silver i was bracing myself for your negative review haha
the one thing i don't understand however is why people say it's a rumpelstilzchen retelling
MINOR SPOILER AHEAD
not only is the humor in this book very subtle but so is the writing in general. one minor moment that impressed me personally is when she describes oleg's funeral and how everyone was grieving cause he was such a nice man except his wife who was the only one to have left with dry eyes - such a clever hint that although oleg was everyone's buddy in the village but behind the closed doors with his wife he might have been another person entirely (which is not at all hard to believe knowing what he tried to do to miryem)
I liked Uprooted too but definitely the least out of all her books.. so I can see why people don’t like it. Her Temeraire series is my favorite series though. Naomi is such a versatile author!!
@@quackaddict9810 i added temeraire to my tbr i'm not sure about it though. it seems too different from these two, there's 50/50 chance of me loving or hating it. i guess i'll never know until i read it but rn it's not my priority. have you also read the deadly education? idk about that one, all the reviews i've seen are quite negative :(
this is so old so sorry but i just uprooted and i agree so much with you it's a 4/5 to spinning silver's 5/5 to me and it was definitely because i liked agnietzka but the demirit was the plot inconsistencies.
I agree with you on wanda and her brother and the old maid pov being boring at first. But my mind changed on wandas completely after the scene of her saying no to the marriage after that i missed her. The little boy made sense for why he was a pov character too eventually.
i think it's rumplestilskin because instead of spinning straw into gold it's silver into gold but doing it gets her trapped instead of freed as in the story and the villian asking for firstborn child part is given to the fire devil instead
So glad you read and enjoyed this! I read it around a year ago last Christmas and I agree with all those things you mentioned about why you love it! Perfect balance of romance, badass women refusing to accept the circumstances they are forced into, and magical atmospheric vibes. Your review has made me want to do a re-read!
I read this book in August last year. August in Phoenix. I guess I needed winter vibes as a break from the heat. I loved this book so much! It's been a long time since I read Uprooted, so I don't remember everything from it in order to compare the two. I will say I thought this was the better book because the characters seemed so real. I loved the small victories the characters had because rarely in life do we have the large moments of victory. Plus it's those quiet victories that usually make the largest impacts. I also love folklore, do I tend to like the soft magic systems that are more common in those stories.
2 min into the review and your enthusiasm convinced me to immediately borrow it from my library in Libby 🙌 and it was available! Thanks ❤️
Glad to hear you liked it! I liked Uprooted but I liked this one way better. The execution of the story as the plot lines are interwoven is just awesome. I loved the magic too, soft magic in some aspects, but the few magic rules we are shown are incredibly neat. Also, I admit I still tear up out of joy everytime I reread the final chapters 🥰
I enjoyed Uprooted but loved Spinning Silver so much more! The ending gave me so many emotions ahh it was so good
I am so glad you enjoyed it! 😊
I liked the book and at the same time I didn't like it. I just think that some descriptions were useless, and from the middle of the book the characters lost their individuality. They no longer acted of their own free will. I felt that they were doing something just to continue the action of the book. In any case, great review
Just finished this book and although it took me over two months to finish, I absolutely loved it. Another 5 star for 2021!
This makes me more excited to get to Spinning Silver! I have had it on my shelf forever now and I just kept putting it off but now I want to make sure I get to it.
I loved this story! It was so dark and atmospheric. I had the same irritation with the POV changes not being announced at the beginning of each change. However, it does say something with the author being able to distinguish the characters plainly based on their personality and context. I loved the cottage between worlds, the spotlight on the jewish culture and mysterious fae elements Novik included.
Glad you liked it despite not caring for Uprooted!
Both Uprooted and Spinning Silver’s worlds are mostly based on Slavic Folklore, with most of it from Russian folk tales. Uprooted’s main character was Baba Yaga essentially, the witch of forest, who is actually typically old and ugly and eats children and lives in this strange cabin with chicken legs. One of Tomb Raider DLCs actually dips a little into that tale.
Spinning Silver has more of Russian folklore and setting to it. Irina (actual Russian name and first letter pronounced with ‘Ee’ sound, not really ‘I’) is the future witty tsaritsa protagonist, who wins against bad fae. You also get the most of Russian old customs when in her POV.
The ‘mysterious cabin’ characters find themselves in at one point, is also one of the old folktales, but I think it’s most grim in the tale itself. With children being eaten.
Have you read the Winternight trilogy?
Yes, the mysterious cabin is also in the Winternight trilogy and I've seen it in other books as well. I am 100% here for more Slavic folklore.
@@00moon I haven’t actually! I heard it’s very detached, like an actual folktale. I’m not sure if I’ll read it at all; as a russian myself, it’s not like I’ll read anything new. I’m more interested in stories that implement Slavic folklore into overall story and setting, like Naomi Novik’s books and Grisha Trilogy. It’s cool.
@@catsandbats77 oh, what other books have it?
@@sol-rosa Oh got it. I think the series overall is more grimdark historical fantasy, like the story ends after the battle of Kulikovo. As for detached.. I don't know how to compare tbh, it's not like you don't get to know what the pov character is thinking at all.. I'd say the agency is 50/50.. I think the first book is more fairy tale, horror, then the next books are action packed. I've seen two videos here by two Russian booktubers, one of them made me take Grishaverse out of my tbr and the other person compared Uprooted, Winternight and Deathless. Apparently Uprooted is less grimdark that Winternight or Deathless so depending on what you like you could try/ not try those.
This sounds great. Historical fiction, fantasy, fairy tale. With strong women. Perfect.
Much love
Amy
Im so happy you enjoyed this. Uprooted is really unfortunate because most people either love it or hate it and it normally gets passed around the most. I know you enjoyed Temeraire (my favorite series!!) so Im glad you gave her another chance. :)
I agree completely. I had an audible credit I had to use before it went away and went with this book which I listened to on my daily 5 mile hikes. Really enjoyed the story and the reader. Recommended.
I'll be reading Spinning Silver next month & I can't wait! ^-^ Really enjoyed your review!
I’m so glad you liked this book! I have been waiting for you to pick it up. I read it all in one day, couldn’t put it down.
I loved this book, I loved Uprooted too. They were my most surprising finds of 2020, I started with Uprooted and everyone criticizes it but I loved it. I'm from Eastern Europe and that book was heavily inspired by our culture and folklore and the whole book felt familiar, cozy to me. I knew the name Baba Yaga right after I've learnt my first words because we grow up on her stories. I loved Uprooted. Spinning Silver is still amazing, less heavily Eastern European inspired but I loved the atmosphere and the story. I had such a crush on the Winter King! :D Loved the ending too!! Amazing books.
I always prefer old-school creepy fae over sexy fae. This book was a lot of fun.
I am so so excited to read this one! I love tricky fae and folklore vibes
I enjoy reading atmospheric stories and I have never had a preference for a story to be character or plot driven, so I ended up loving both Uprooted and Spinning Silver, with Uprooted being my favourite. There were decisions Agnieszka made as a character that I didn't agree with, but the story itself about the world and the woods and the history, and the truth about the Dragon and why he took the girls, and why they left, that was all entrancing to me. I remember thinking it was just a Beauty and the Beast retelling and I read it on my kindle thinking it wouldn't be anything special, and it ended up being worth hunting down a hardcover edition for more money than I'd ever paid before for a book.
Whimsical magic has an appeal to me after growing up with movies like Labyrinth or Never Ending Story or Disney's Sword in the Stone or Quest for Camelot. Back then a lot of fantasy wasn't as logical, though I also enjoy the well thought out politics and magic systems that we see today. But the raw, unexplained magic of a kingdom full of hidden wonders, uncharted and wild, is exactly the kind of world I would want to create myself.
This book has been on my TBR for what feels like ages... I definitely need to read it asap.
This sounds really good, im gonna try and pick it up before winter ends. Other than The Bear and the Nightengale do you guys know of any other good fantasy books that are set in the winter?
I liked both this one and Uprooted. Love the atmosphere Novik is able to create and I actually like soft magic systems like this.
Uprooted is (imo) the worst novel I've read in my life, Elle, but hearing this review actually makes me want to give Novik a second attempt on her work. Great review!!!
😂😂😂 I honestly couldn’t stand Uprooted either.
@@ebnovels Hahaha that's good to hear! 😂 I'm looking forward to reading this one, then!
i agree with you the povs were confusing, especially when listening to the audiobook, because the narrator had a similar accents for each girl character.
Hi 👋 I wasn’t fan uprooted book... maybe I might check spinning silver??? Thank u for the review.. 😊📖 happy reading to u!! 📖
I also didn't care for Uprooted, but still wanted to try this one. I'm happy you enjoyed it, so I will definitely move it up my TBR.
I enjoyed this book over Uprooted as well. Thematically it touches on so many things which I loved. I also enjoyed the prose and how it would change depending on a characters pov.
I really appreciate this review. I initially thought I'd get this book based on what I'd heard about it. However, now with your review I think I can accurately predict that this would not be a good book for me. I do think it's probably a great story that I'd like to hear someone tell me about, but to actually read it I don't think would enjoyable tor me and it would end up on my DNF pile. Thank you - I am so glad that you loved it though!! That's always nice to hear when someone liked or loved a book.
I also loved this book. I was honestly surprised by my level of enjoyment. Makes me want to give uprooted another try because I think my issue with that was definitely the audiobook narrators.
I agreed with everything you said😂😂 It’s become my favorite of all time.
I'm so glad you liked this book! I also prefered this one over Uprooted! I liked the main character a lot (while I had some problems with the main character in Uprooted). Also Wanda and her brothers
I read Spinning Silver a while ago and I thought it was very well written with intriguing characters and a well executed fantasy. 😎
Finally ! Great book. Great review.
Your reviews are always great. I always want to read the books you talk about
The ARC of Spinning Silver had individual icons to signify which character perspective you were switching to and I will never understand why they removed that from the published copy. It’s my only complaint about the whole book.
Hey question? Does this book touch on rape/dark topics? I’m just wondering if is appropriate for a young child, maybe 11-12?
Hi, Elliot! I have just finished the book and loved it so much! Also, I loved your review and analysis.
Regarding the points of view, I agree that, when the POV changes, it takes a second to know who is talking. What I think helps to clarify the shifting perspective is the way the author wrote the first sentences of each character (using certain nouns and pronouns). The fact that the author didn’t name the chapters when the POV changed made it feel for me as if the characters had a similar part to play in the story, were equally important and the events happening in this world affected each of them, something like saying “we’re all in this together”.
Regarding the scene that you mentioned which is described from the POV of a child, I was a little bit hesitant at the beginning, but then I thought that maybe this way, the scene included a more “wholesome” perspective and managed to depict all the main characters and their actions, and we didn’t miss a thing of what was happening.
So many things I loved about this book, but I’ll just mention one: the different voices of the different first person narrators. The Tsar is resigned and cynical (and hilarious), while Stepon is innocent and earnest, and all the other characters are distinctive and feel authentic. (Please excuse misspellings, audiobook you know.)
I have just finished this book and I am so divided in my opinion. I am new to the fantasy genre, I found it so slow for the first third, then the next third was ok but the book really picked up at the end. I agree I would have liked a heads up as to who was ‘speaking’ but I did feel the characters were really well developed and I loved how all the characters stories interlinked. I really wanted to love this book because I so enjoy all your videos Elliot, I did ❤️ the ending.
As a Jewish person, this novel meant so much to me 💙 I loved it so much! And I HATED Uprooted, so I was so pleasantly surprised 😂
I read Spinning Silver two years ago and loved it. I'm still on the fence about reading Uprooted due to what others have said about it.
I've ben hesitant to read this because I found Uprooted so disappointing. But I've seen quite a few people, like you, who really liked it even though they didn't like Uprooted. I think I will give it a chance!
Been hoping for your review on this book, can’t wait to hear your thoughts 💙
I am so happy you like this book it's one of my favorites!
same I read Spinning Silver first and enjoyed it. Went to read uprooted and was horribly devastated by the disappointment. I even tried her new series A Deadly Education and dnf'd it
Love this review and loving this book!
I loved Uprooted but couldn’t connect to Spinning Silver and DNFed it. But after listening to your review, I might give it another chance sometime later.
I've read Spinning Silver and Uprooted. I loved them both. I actually enjoyed the first third of Uprooted way more than Spinning Silver but then it started to drag a little for me, whereas Spinning Silver kept my attention the whole time.
Ah I’m glad you loved Spinning Silver!
Jonique'a Smith:Is Spinning Silver a retelling of Rumplestilskin?🤔
Spinning Silver is my favourite Novik book and watching this review is making me desperate to reread this. Just need to somehow get this book back from the friend I lent it to...
Can you make a video on the best books with soft magic?
can you bring back your violin music at the end?? I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that I miss it! Anyway, hope you're well!
It’s from the Witcher 3 soundtrack if you’d like to hear it more 😄
Hi! I'm an author who just released his first full novel titled "Deplorable Instinct" on Amazon. If I give you
a free copy, would you review it? You'd have 100% freedom on your reception.
I loved Spinning Silver. I have Uprooted on my bookshelf, but I haven’t picked it up yet. I keep hearing that people like either one or the other so I’m curious if I’ll feel the same.
I loved both, but I think you are more likely to be disappointed with Uprooted if you read this one first. Spinning Silver is just better in every possible way.
@@violetalar5387 I've kind of sensed that. I think that's why I haven't picked it up yet.
The perspective changes were a little hard to deal with in the audio book as well.
Sounds interesting.. Goes to my tbr :)
I'm the other way around. I loved Uprooted and this book was a let down. A good book, but not what I hoped for 😊.
I adored this book! 😍💕
I’m not interested in this book review but afaik they generally tend to do worse than other videos on UA-cam. Leaving a comment for the algorithm!
Hey guys..I wanna buy a book for my frnd
1.Heartless by Melissa Meyer
2.Spinning silver by Naomi Novik
3. To kill a kingdom by Alexandra Christo
Which book did you like the most?
Is it like a tragic ending book ? Because of all the dark stuff you said happened in it 🥶.
Spoiler
It isnt tragic
no i'd call it a happy ending
All of her books are so different from each other that I am beginning to think she is 5 people.
This isn’t what I call spoiler free 🙈
