My mum, born in the 20s, talked about the hideous woollen swimsuits they all wore. She hated how they felt.
Your history of swimsuits is wonderful and you model them so well, showing that bodies were bodies, regardless of era.
Honestly I have no clue why some older folks talk about how horrible they were 🤷 I love mine and wear it often
I once wore woollen bathing trunks (male here), and I must say, they are terrible. They suck in water like a sponge and get very heavy, they take AGES to dry, and they're itchy like hell, getting tangled with my body hair. Really not a fan - either lycra or nothing at all
I'm a fan of the 40s style. I was in college in the 90s and had a vintage deadstock suite from the early 50s. I loved that suit. It was like a little dress with separate Bottoms. It was navy blue cotton with little red flowers and white trim. I seriously felt like a princess in it.

I have always liked any swimsuit that covers me up, even back when I was thin. By that definition, up through the 1920s would suit me best. I like suits which have skirts or look like a pair of shorts on the bottom. I hated suit shopping starting in the 1980s because it became so hard to find suits that were not high cut. I never found those type of legs comfortable at all. I enjoyed a look at this topic.
I love how the hairstyles changed as you were modeling. I wonder if it would have changed the look of the suit had you had your hair the same throughout.
Oh completely as well as the makeup. Nothing looks correct for the given period with wrong hair and makeup

This was fascinating! My personal favorite is the Victorian Era followed by the 1920s one you just made. I really love how some of these look, silhouette wise, but not for my figure personally. I really want to make a Victorian swimsuit for myself. Wonderful video ❤

Appreciate all the work you put into this and your other videos. I had a bay watch style suit but with a white lace overlay and almost like a lace flare at the top of the leg, I lost it doing photos for my short lived venture int acting. I loved that suit and at least had professional photos in it.
I'd heard a lot about woollen swimsuits, but I think this was the first time I'd heard mention of silk! Wool has obvious drawbacks as swimwear, but I'm very curious about how a silk swimsuit would feel and perform...
I'm very curious what you think are wool swimsuits drawbacks? Because haven owned one for over a decade the only ones I can think of is a slightly longer drying time and well you can't wash it in a regular cycle 🤷 but wool swimsuits don't really need a wash

I actually like the 1880s and 1920s suits because they offer more sun protection. I usually wear a modern rash vest and swim shorts if I go to the beach. I would love to see more fashionable versions of this nowadays - they’d probably be referred to as “modest”
Yeah I absolutely hate that everything gets labelled as modest 🙄 I too rather cover up with fabric than sun screen most of the time but it has nothing to do with modesty
@@sewthroughtime Yeah ,but the truth is it does have to does have many women who do chose those swimsuits to be modest in truth and so historically it did matter infact as much as people would love and want to dismiss that ,so you can't just get mad about things like that some women truly want that . Just try to find one that doesn't talk about modesty then if it makes you so mad.
That Victorian swimsuit is dapper as heck.
I like the1940s silhouette best, and I think it would look best on my body type. I've never considered sewing my own swimsuit, but maybe I should try it!
My favorite is the 1920s red suit, sans the top. Also the 90s suit but lower cut in the legs and rear. I've been considering making ponte knit swimsuits.
I've worn dress swimsuits since my teens in the 2010s. As in, a normal lycra(?) swimsuit with a sewn on lycra dress on top. Love the coverage and how "dressed" you still look in them.
As for historical suits, i think 40s and 50s would suit my sensibilities and body shape best ❤❤ an extra cover up skirt never goes amiss.

Ha, found it - and it's EXACTLY like I said. Wearing the caps surely had also something to do with the pain it is to redo your hair without a blowdryer?
Not so much since the linen cap wouldn't provide much extra protection to just having your hair in a bun, it more plays in to societal standards of the time around how people appear in public as well as hygiene standards. I'll get more into them in a future video 😊

My favorite is the Victorian era and the current era top. But I just want to wear that style of bloomers with everything every day 😅 And I love the shape of the modern top with the smooth backline.
I like the '40s style best, especially the bikini.
50s and 60s styles are more aesthetic, and would look better for more bodies than the skin tight form fit second skin types of suits. Though the second one (Victorian) would be best for me personally due to skin problems (sun and water are horrible individually, murder when combined!) I would have to go to an indoor pool anyway.
I love the idea of swimming in a shift, it seems romantic - although the material might stick to your legs in the water 😅
I think it depends on how you swim, I do the breast stroke and it doesn't bother me at all as I swim

I can never have wool against my skin. I'm very allergic and don't like the idea of using animals for fabric. Plastics suck too honestly. Cotton is king.

I didn't know that in those distant times, when there were no swimsuits, women already had tattoos.
Love the video. But did i hear right? Crocheted bikinis? I was a teenager in the 1970’s and wore bikinis all the time. I have no memory of anyone wearing, let alone making, crocheted bikinis. Perhaps it was an American thing? (I’m in Australia).
There's patterns for them in Australian magazines from the era as well 😊
@@sewthroughtimeinteresting. But no-one I knew back then crocheted, apart from my grandma, and she only made quilts. But know I remeber that was in the 60s. We wore one-piece Speedos in the 70s , mainly because competitive swimming, pool and surf, was compulsory at school and two-piece swimmers not allowed. Not sporty enough, too. We’re obsessed with sport.
