Best Integra Type R Upgrade (So Far)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 вер 2024
- By far this is the best performance upgrade I’ve done to my 2000 Integra Type R so far. Not only was performance increased, but in my case, emissions as well. That is a very rare thing with performance parts in my experience.
I was lucky enough to purchase these exhaust parts used and I saved a ton of money as a result, but if you’re considering doing something similar to your vehicle, I strongly recommend quality exhaust parts like the ones I installed in this video.
I wish I had been able to dyno the car before and after the exhaust swap. Since I saved the old exhaust, that might be a possibility in the future. However, know that I do feel a ‘seat of the pants’ difference in the car with the new exhaust. I honestly can’t say enough good things about it. The car was fun to drive before, it’s even better now.

Avast! It’s a Type Argh!
this be a pirates fav car ...
Those welds are YARGH, weld much???
I believe Vibrant has the gaskets you need and a new flange.
I love the enthusiasm you have for the car. This is how I felt the day after I put my 4-2-1 header and Remus muffler on my CRX. Quality exhaust upgrades are worth it for sure. The thickness of the pipe is what gives it a good sound. All the ebay stainless exhausts sound crappy because 1. there's actually nothing in the muffler usually and 2. it's super thin metal and it resonates like mad and gives the car a tinny high pitched sound which is sadly characteristic for modified hondas. Thick stainless or steel piping gives a much nicer sound since perhaps the thick metal absorbs the high frequencies, i'm not sure. but for sure quality parts for the win.
Hearing the company names for the performance parts brings me right back to my Honda tuning days...
New exhaust sounds way better. That header is letting it breath up high, not to mention the new cat.
Damn the CAT
Dammit, Eric, why do you always upload right as I'm about to go to bed?
Looks like it's sucking oil past the valves between shifts and coasting in gear.
b series burn oil from the factory. that may be a part of it
They burn oil yes, but they're not supposed to smoke like that..
Thank god, you finally fixed the Type R sticker on the trunk lol
I always liked those Tanabe Medallion mufflers, they look and sound great!
The perfect exhaust for a Honda.
I agree 100%. This is the best exhaust I've ever seen/heard on a Honda.
EricTheCarGuy better than my greddy evolution with megan racing headers and test pipe ? (honda accord 2001 coupe f23a4)

I picked up a Tanabe medallion for my b20v Integra a while back for dirt cheap. Haven't installed it yet because I've been busy with customer cars. But being an "older" guy I like an exhaust tone as close to quiet as possible but also want the extra couple hp. Glad I made the right choice.
Pretty sure cuss words were invented as a result of the automobile.
You can diagnose pretty much every auto mechanic and enthusiast with Tourette's based on what's said in garages and over the radios on track.
I love watching your video compare to scotty he only moves his hand not getting it dirty. Stay dirty my friend.
I don't remember the last time I tapped on a video so quickly, I like my Tenabe Medallion too!
Get an air intake on so you have ALL the vtec noises yo!!!
Actually, I think the OE set up is best. No matter, I'll have a supercharger whine soon enough to go with the VTEC.
@@ericthecarguy oh yea! I forgot you bought that supercharger
I’m a fan of the comptech icebox intake. It keeps the stock style box with a larger inlet tube to the box. Makes a nice sound too. There is a company called HeelToe that bought the molds and makes them new again now also.
From my experience, theses after catalytical converters, just don't work Honda, and Toyota, after market catalytic, £100, original £1300, big difference, in quality p0420, light
Damn you can hear it struggling to breathe in the stock exhaust sound clip 😢😓 poor car 😍🔰
Flat exhaust gaskets are copper wire sandwiched with paper,

Doughnut exhaust gaskets are a ring of copper wire mesh,
dipped in lead.
Both crush into sealing, and should not be reused.
All exhaust gaskets should be whetted with copper

I had a ‘92 GS-R (B17A1). First car I bought new. Loved it and had it for 220k miles. Miss it when I hear you running through the gears.
Advantageous? Checking Webster dictionary........ be right back. Without even checking Webster, the root word is "advantage" so it probably means "more advantage" or something very close. - something involving more favorable circumstances having a better chance at success
Amazing job Eric, Was cool hanging out with ya in the shop!
Wait, wait. Stock mufflers AREN'T supposed to make those noises? Well, I have a small fleet of crap sounding cars now apparently...
Oooo exhaust system rattle! Drives a fella nuts. Innards on my catalytic converter came undone and made a hell of a racket; people would turn their heads as I went by it was so bad. :( Getting the new converter installed was a real joy, involving five of the six studs coming loose just fine but one being rusted solid, entailing an hour of lying on my back with a Sawzall trying to cut through it. Had to stop every few minutes and break off the worn-down tip of the blade to expose new teeth. Went through three blades before the stud finally cut through! UGH.

Aftermarket exhaust, fits most cars, after a few cuts and welds, and longer bolts, piece of cake. That’s a tough job, even a preacher would cuss a few times. I was going to say fart can, but it sounds great.
Nah i wouldn't of done it that way.But in saying that,i don't know what i'm doing anyway. Thanks for sharing. You made it look simple
You should take the top of that intake off and paint it. It would be more pleasing to the eyes. It'll add at least 5 hp. You'll get another 5 hp if you paint your calipers too. Ha ha
Thanks for putting a cat on it. I get very annoyed by all the youtubers that remove the smog equipment.
That stock exhaust really blows Windy.
Eric, do you think it's worth wrapping headers?
Poppet valve technology just kicked in yo.
Dude, you bagged a Type-R? GG Eric. You deserve one.
Eric: Oh no! My arch nemesis, a rock!
Mid Pipe: OH RLY?
I was referring to anything with wheels in my shop, my welder specifically. ;)
Loving this, very relatable (except for the Type R part of it!)
Meh, it's really just an expensive Civic.
Wait, the best upgrade wasn't a set of Micheline? What did you do with Eric?

I know you’re probably pressed for time/want to drive this vehicle...on the other hand what do the viewers need to do for you to do a full engine build????
P.s love your videos, I’ve been watching for the very beginning probably 5+ years I think now!
Sadly I don't have any plans for a rebuild of this engine. Catch Mondays ETCG1 video for more detailed info on what I'm doing to this car. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!
I had a similar rattle in on of my manifold cats, so I removed said cat, removed the insides (dont tell the E.P.A.) and reinstalled it. No more rattle. Ha ha
Looks like those valve steam seals might need replacing ;)
They're fine. It was just the new cat breaking in. Thanks for the comment.
I believe that is the first Ericgasm I have seen out of all of the videos I have watched over the years. Good job.

I'm about to get a multi process welder so I can do TIG. MIG TIG doesn't matter. It's just a matter of practice. You're doing great. Those welds will do fine. Thanks for the video as usual!
Hey, Eric you didn't forget to move the oil dip stick tube after warming up the engine did you?
P0-420. A new Cat will usually take care of that... Eric. I love it, you're like a kid at Christmas getting a new toy... I have a 2000 Accord that is going to need a new Cat pretty soon (it's got the rattle). No codes yet, but I was thinking on replacing the exhaust system when I do the Cat. I know it's not an Acura Integra Type-R, but the car runs and drives great and after this video it made me want to do the exhaust even more. Great video! Thanks Eric.
I know those motors very well. I built a few f20b preferably. Same exhaust I dig it
C5's VTEC is so loud, haha. The Honda haters gotta hate that.
Def. a good upgrade. Fart can drone is annoying, and that doesn't have it. It's a tad loud, but not overbearing, and most importantly, not droning.
Looks perfect, super OEM looking, nice work!
Also, glad to see somebody who welds more on my level :-P. Usually when I see welds on the internet it's a weldporn candidate and I'm like " :( "
Skunk2 doesn't make great quality shit, so the header buzz isn't totally out of left field. I've used their stuff before. It's "pretty good", but not exactly "great."
Car smokes out exhaust, throws P0"420" code, tight.
Also, I own a b18c5 myself and daily it, do you get any blow by on decel in gear?
Greetings also from Dayton, Oh.
I have never had any success with VHT paint on exhaust pipes. No matter how careful I am following the instructions it always flakes off after a few months. I don't think it gets hot enough to fully cure, because it sticks to my catalytic converter just fine. Maybe just regular engine paint or BBQ/oven paint is better?
Good job Eric 👍 Nice.
Man, everything was fighting you on this one, stuff falling everywhere :))
That aside, great retrofit/install. I really liked how you tackled the cat flange (engine side) certainly better than how you usually see them in the wild.
My '02 Toyota pickup had the back O2 sensor plug located under the seat and carpet in the cab, had to pull the whole bench seat to access it! What a PITA.
Excellent craftsmanship with the new exhaust system!
Hey Eric, could you make a video explaining returnless fuel systems please bud?
ERIC! SO GOOD to see you wrenching on stuff again! Better yet, it's the Type R. There's no comparison to the old and new exhaust tones - fart can sound BE DAMNED! (I'm condemned to hear flatulence buckets whining past my house since they widened the street. Singularly unpleasant!)
The saw blades look like those after Moe draws a saw across Curly's head. "OH! OH! OH! Oh, Look!"
Good to hear another black ITR on the road with a 2.5" cat and not sounding obnoxious. Just like what I did on my 01 ITR. I may have the same cat you do! 2.5" all the way back but with JDM 4-1 header. I added 3 O2 bungs if I ever want to go the route of tuning. But after owning so many RS/LS/GSR and finally the dream ITR, I'm an old man that just wants to cruise with it mildly stock. Test pipe hurts when driving for long hours. Looking forward to more updates.
So happy you arent saying headers. It may be ebay, but I've always like the megan racing catback exhausts for the price.
My iPhone did not like it when you said “b series for the win” 😂
That look at 22:13 been there, done that hahaha
Hey bud, I've been subbed to your channel for a good while and been enjoying all your content
I got an unrelated question. (Hope that is ok)
I have a 2002 z71 with 5.3, 200k miles. After about 10 min on the highways (when I happen to notice it at 65mph) I get what sounds like a rod knock. Twice, I stopped off to see what is going on. The knock seems to be coming from both sides or perhaps the middle front of the motor and quite pronounced. One time it went away just idling about a minute after I turned ON the AC (doubt that is related). In a few instances, after noticing the knock ~10 min later it was gone (basically when I get to work -- all highway: 65/75mph). It is hard to notice unless parked or driving close a K wall on the highway because there is a dumb Flowmaster installed. My father about two weeks prior to this thought it was an exhaust leak so I performed a smoke test with no leaks and forgot about it until I started driving the truck more regularly.
I have not had a chance to perform a ear-screwdriver-test. I have had this truck for almost 2 years. Oil pressure never gets above 40 (which is on the low end from what I read on forums). The fact that this happens only at operating temp then goes away is really confusing me. Thoughts?
Also, I am all set to do the timing chain gasket (and chain-already did the intake, knock sensors, valve covers and thermostat) the oil pump is a little pricey but might as well? Maybe engine flush first? Which makes me wonder if the knock could somehow be the chain… I know that might seem crazy…. I dunno…
When I first stumbled across this video in the playlist, and yes I am subscribed, I was like do I really want to commit to a near 42 minute video. I was like...just think about how many 10 minute videos I could watch in my recommended playlist in that time. I was thinking after all this is EricTheCarGuy, and just as expected I was not disappointed. LOL. Thank you for sharing this. I love your car. I have an '05 RSX Type-S. I'm thinking of doing Skunk 2 headers or something similar. It already has Greddy Catback exhaust with a resonator delete. I need to get on kseriesparts.com and look around.
I just did the full exhaust system on my 1998 Integra GS-R with a DC sports header 2 piece, new cat converter, new oem replacement midpipe and premium oem style muffler. Sounds amazing but it was actually just done to get rid of the annoying RATTLES the factory exhaust makes. If anyone has the stock exhaust manifold they will know what the problem is!! They rattle like crazy at 3-4k rpm making the car sound like shit. the problem is the oem flanges/ gasket surfaces get rusty
Yep totally agree, ETCG is the FIRST You Tube car guy I watched from the start on tv it was Shade Tree Mechanic on PBS with Dave Bowmen and Sam M. sorry cant spell his last name. ETCG keep them GREAT videos coming as always until next.
I thought Eric was going to install something cool like gel memory seat cushions or covers.
I grew up in the 1980's on dairy farms of Pennsylvania. Every car we owned was 10+ years old and 100k+ miles. They all had the same exhaust sounds...it's normal, no issue...as explained to me....🤣😂
Awesome! I have a tenabe medallion for my crx, as well as an apexi ws2 for my integra, I hope they sound as good as your r!
Damn Eric, that sounds like an S2000! Awesome stuff
I thought the toyo r1r wasn't in production any more:?
Likely old tires
Need to use some diablo steel demon heavy duty sawzall blade they cut through like butter 😂
Hey Eric, if you need a new donut gasket then order the one from the S2000. It utilizes a 2.5" gasket. Love that it doesn't sound like a fart can. Congrats on the new exhaust.

Hey EricTheCarGuy, been watching your videos for about 3years (shortly after buying my 97 GS-Sedan Integra would love to see what you think about what I've done so far and to see if the way I'm going about it is the correct one, I'd hate to ruin my baby as she is my daily.
I like hw its actually fairly quite an clean sounding older vid but good job. Noticed the older ive gotten i still like after market exhaust but just something thats louder than stock but not loud
Eric, that's a Tanabe medallion chambered muffler.... its not a fart can. its supposed to sound like that.
And your car smokes when decelerating.... valve seals may be shot.
Sounds great and The big smile on your face says it all , Good luck & enjoy it ! Oh nice job on The install too ...........
No fart can noise👍
Hate hearing carts screaming and farting down hills😂
The problem with mine is rasp, so next time I go to modify it I will be putting in a resonator... also hopefully will quiet it down a bit.
Hi ETCG. Watched thus video right after having installed new headers myself and noticed you applied anti-seize on the O2 sensor. What did you use? Copper-paste?
Had to mod Skunk2 header to fit standard cat weird pointing down flange at cat end of header
I think I'll be going there also to fix that exhaust leak. Going to start with a new gasket though. Thanks for the comment.
Good job !
My cousin had a red one of those type R's back in the early 2000s
His was stupid loud though. Awesome little car!
From memory his one had Recaro race seats from the factory (his was a Honda, Not acura)
Titanium exhaust heat wrap works awesome with temp and wrapped correctly looks amazing, also would help with your dip stick.
Now since it’s been a year are you getting any exhaust soot on the bumper from being so far in??
Brilliant video. Nice to see a wee bit of custom work and an upgrade. Would be really interested in more of this type of thing.
Last year I replaced the oem exhaust on my 94 Integra GSR with a Yonaka catback exhaust. I had to add 4 inches of pipe to make it fit my car. Long story short, I hate it. It drones and doesn't sound nice at all. Too loud for my taste. I wasn't able to return it because of the modification. I am thinking about adding a J pipe or Helmholtz resonator but I have yet to find any shop in my area that can do the job or is willing to take it on. I tried to install other exhaust brands but although they are supposed to fit my car the one I've tried so far rewuire 4 extra inches of pipe. Something to do with the b pipe on the GSR 2 door for that model year. I am reluctant to spenmore than needed to fix the droning issue but may have no other choice.
YA, I'm 3 minutes in this vid. & " ANYTHING WILL SOUND BETTER THAN THAT ? EXHAUST ", HOLY CROW.
Ah,
The infamous holy crow.
@@fastinradfordable YA, More Crows around here than MOO- COWS ?
I get that occasional rattle that probably is inside the muffler ! Gotta give it a wham with the hand and see. The second time I see you take off 02 sensors, when replacing exhausts. OE sensors are available, the same manufacture is stamped on the sensor, ie; NTK on mine. The flange where the header connects to the pipe, is cocked. One side is closer than the other.
When you weld a pipe or anything, you should do it like you tighten bolts on a tire, flange, engine cover or anything with multiple bolts. The reason being when you weld you heat the metal and expand it, and when it cools down, it shrinks. When it shrinks it pulls. So even if you have tack welded it, it still does it, just not as much. So when you start with tack welded parts aligned like this ----I I---- when you weld only one one side it can be like this ---I /--- (lower side welded only. Thats why you get misalinged flanges. Also why stanless steel can corrode is when you heat it, you evaporate some of the chrome from the surface o the steel. You create a chrome poor area. You can see this as a color change. Chrome is what makes it stainless. So you ideally should treat the surface with acid after welding it, to clean it and make it as it was before you heated it by welding. If you cant do it, second best is to grind it till its nice and shiny. Painting it works only for as long as the paint is intact and under the car its not ideal. If paint gets sracthed or whatever, the corrosion is even worse under the paint. Thats why you see rust under paint bubble.
Ericthecarguy be careful with the exhaust not sticking out all the way out .. You might melt the Bumper. It happened to my car. ;(
You should get that thing dyno tuned on hondata s300 so you get the full potential of the exhaust. Just jdm b16a swapped my 97 civic coupe
42 has quite a rough RR crossing!
It looks and sounds great. I only wish the muffler tip was a couple inches farther back to better fill the cutout in the bumper.
@ericthecarguy if you need to learn how to do coil on plugs for the B Series. You can contact a toutuber named Youngstatic. I believe you will find his channel interesting and he did this mpd already to his B series crx. Hit him up.
