Problems of DEATH'S GAME: is suicide a sin?

- This is not a proper video essay, but more like a personal rant. A few months ago, I was watching Death’s Game on Amazon Prime, and got mad while watching it. Personally, I really dislike shows that use family relationship/romantic relationship/friendship to guilt-trip characters. The concept of "I raised you, hence you owe me" is deeply rooted in many families, and it can be seen in this show because the whole story starts from the main protagonist receiving punishment for commiting suicide, as this is deemed as a selfish, unfilial behavior to his family members.

I had heard of this show but did not realise this is what it was about. Honestly one of the most harmful pieces of media I've ever seen especially with the ongoing suicide crisis for young people in Korea. Great job with the editing and commentary!
I had the exact same thoughts when watching Death's Game. It's what kept me from raving about it. I also think this critique can be extended to Tomorrow (a drama I really love) because of how it never fully confronts the premise that the punishment for unaliving oneself is eternal damnation. Even though a character asks why, apparently heaven itself doesn't know the answer. 🙄
I have never watched Tomorrow, but based on what you said, it sounds like these shows have the same problems! I’m just surprised when I saw all the good reviews about this show… and thinking that how vastly different people can be
@@yuanProductionI think because of how ubiquitous these social teachings are - blaming the victim for ending their life, guilting them for not powering through even though no one is willing to help them - most viewers don't find anything wrong with it. Their empathy isn't trained to recognise the manipulation. It's a frustrating thought.
My best friend once asked me how'd i feel if she just left the world next day...i said I'd be mad how could she leave me I can't even bear the pain of her going how selfish of her to do that...then she explained me isn't it selfish of us to expect someone living their miserable life because we want them to...and now I don't think of humans as someone collective pieces in our lives its so much more than that
Wow I don’t even know if I will ever bring up such a heavy topic like this with my best friend. It’s very hard to be objective sometimes when the person who committed suicide is your loved ones. I know the right answer should be something like “I wish I could be any help to alleviate the pain. But if the unfortunate thing really happens, I know that you definitely tried your best to pull yourself out of it, and I want to thank you for keep forging ahead in life for so long.” But in reality, if that really happens, I will probably be really miserable.
@@yuanProduction it does hurt to think that you can only help people till a certain limit...you wanna soak up all their pain but in reality you can't. The worst feeling is that wasn't I enough for you to be happy.
@@yuanProduction I think people movies and shows should represent this side too Instead of making someone villian who are just in pain
It is one of the most heartbroken feelings on earth for sure
It’s quite a harrowing experience watching Japanese and Korean shows and realizing that many actors in those show already committed seppuku.
This show is fun. Production design is quite good but like you said, it’s very victim blaming and doesn’t really address the structural problem that caused these seppuku events in the first place.
Meanwhile, in contrast to Death’s Game, I find Godzilla Minus One a good example of anti-suicide media. It also has a message of appreciating life but also criticizing the Japanese culture big time. I would love to know your opinion on this movie.
This is such a great video!! You made me see things i didnt even notice before like how the suicides in the show triggered other negative events. I really liked the show for all the other factors (like plot, cinematography, actors, etc.) but still agree with all your points. Its sad they portrayed suicidal people like that
I lost my mom to suicide 3 years ago. I’m so happy I never watched this show. It would’ve pissed me off
I’m so sorry to hear that. Unfortunately sometimes living on this planet is extremely hard. I hope time will make you feel better.
never seen it, but thought about watching it. definitely won’t now seeing how horrible it is
Lots of people like it so you might not necessarily agree with me haha
A disappointing interpretation.
