Tejendra Narayan Majumdar is a distinguished Sarod artist from India, an exponent of the Maihar Gharana. He began his early training under the guidance of his grandfather, Bibhuti Ranjan Majumdar, and later his father, Ranjan Majumdar, nurtured Majumdar’s considerable talent. He eventually continued his training under many notable musicians, which included Ustad Bahadur Khan, Pandit Amaresh Chowdhury, Anil Palit, Pandit Ajay Sinha Roy, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, and Pandit Ravi Shankar. Majumdar is known to combine the intellectual density and technical virtuosity of his gharana, while combining elements from the Dhrupad, Tantrakari, as well as Gayaki styles of music. Quoting the New York Times in an article published in 1994: ‘Mr. Majumdar’s playing sometimes suggested the way Beethoven reconstructed a theme of his variations in his late works.’ He was awarded the President’s Gold Medal, the Pandit D V Paluskar Award, the Sangeet Mahasamman, to name a few. He is currently a guru at the Bengal Parampara Sangeetalay, in Dhaka.
Ganesh Rajagopalan are a noted Indian violin players who are a part of the Carnatic music fraternity. Ganesh was born in Kanpur and began training under the guidance of his father, T S Rajagopalan. He began performing on stage from a very early age. Ganesh Rajagopalan, the music virtuoso with a multi-faceted personality, has a long association with films and film music. He has acted as Ram in the film Brahmarishi Vishwamitra - a film by the legendary actor NTR. He has also acted in the film Oru Veedu Iru Vaasal, directed by another legend S. Balachandar.
Musical gravity centred on Dhaka's Army Stadium as the music of the two hemispheres of Indian Classical Music - Hindustani (North Indian) and Carnatic (South Indian) met in Pandit Tejendra Narayan Majumdar's sarod and Ganesh Rajagopalan's violin. Any Carnatic-Hindustani jugalbandi is a special treat to classical music aficionados because it is essentially the best of both worlds.
Pt Yogesh Samsi on tabla and Ravishankar Bhadrachar on mridangam emptied out all their rhythmic charisma during the blitzkrieg musical session blossoming Raga Malkauns (called Raga Hindolam in Carnatic music). Later, they performed Raga Charukesi and a Bhatiali dhun as tribute to Pallikabi Jasimuddin. An inspired Bangladeshi audience thoroughly enjoyed the solo parts, jugalbandi and sawal-jawab.
