Speer reloading manual #11 gives this definition of dram as a unit of measurement for blackpowder quote : term used to indicate that a charge of smokeless powder produces the same velocity as a given number of drams charge of black powder . Thus, a 3 dram equivalent load has a charge of smokeless powder that gives the same velocity as a similar load charged with 3 drams blackpowder. One dram equals 27.3 grains .
Don't forget some shotshells have paper base wads, and are ruined if they get wet. Since your a caster you have to try slugs, never had to much luck with lee key drive slugs, but always wanted to try some of the Russian molds or lyman, cool thing is lead hardness doesn't matter as much for the free range lead when it comes to slugs. I had a pot for shotshells with soft lead and another pot for hard lead for rifles and handguns
I've been researching on some slugs so that will happen, eventually. I have plenty of range scrap to go around. Should be plenty hard enough if I can shoot the same lead in my pistols and 300blk with no issues. I have pure lead I can soften it with, too. I'll probably start with the Lee 7/8 but I'm open to suggestions 🇺🇸👍👊
I used to take a laundry bag and fill it halfway full then throw them in the washing machine on the delicate cycle. Worked great until I put in shells with paper and fiber inside the base... had crap inside the washing machine from the fiber bases. Tiny little fibers everywhere... then the wife came out to see what I was doing. Needless to say I didn't do that again. Theye were Federal top gun hulls....
You just think loading game and skeet loads is addicting wait until you get into loading buckshot and slugs! It is so much fun going thru all the different variations seeing which ones do what.
I'm hoping to cast some buck shot this weekend so we will be going down that road here soon. Slugs are further down the line, but definitely going to happen🇺🇸👍👊
@@DummyRound it is a ton of fun. Check out BubbaRountree Outdoors. Wade Rush is the buckshot loading guru. I learned a ton from watching his videos when I got into this a couple years ago.
Silly question...when those shot shells get to the point of being reloaded enough, will it have case head separation like brass rifle cases sometimes have?
I've heard the plastic just cracks and you can't crimp them any more. Usually 2 to 5 firings, depending on the hull. You can also just trim them down to the next shell height and reuse them for that, ending up with are essentially minishells.
One pound is 256 drams, one dram is 27-11/32 grains. That's for BP. If it says '3 drams equivalent' that means smokeless powder to an 'equivalent' power level of 3 drams but is NOT 3 x 27 grains of smokeless powder. It's just to give you an idea of how much 'boom' it makes. Unnerstand? If you were using BP you could just multiply drams by 27 (27.5) and load using FFg but DON'T do that with smokeless.

Awesome, thanks 👊👍🇺🇸

🤣 I bet your wife was happy about that
20's are bright yellow to keep ya from putting them in a 12. That would be a bad day😢
A bad day, indeed! CW had a great video about it about a month or so ago. Thanks for hanging out!
Nylon bottle brush would work to clean the inside of the shell case and it is shot shell
Thanks!
I forgot to tell you Dr if you heat that spin doctor up with a torch that helps a little
I have heard that so I'll keep one handy when I get to them. Thank you, brother!

I've been binge watching his channel for the last 2 months, great stuff!

That's what I was imagining but you used real numbers to connect it for me. Thanks👍
I wish I can just go to my range and pick up cases or hulls 😭
Why can't you?
@@DummyRound I can pick up my own, but others or just go and grab some they don't like it. I guess is a rule
That's no fun
Do not wet the Federal cheap hulls with the paper base wad , it will blow in your face .
Thanks, I'll watch for those. Good timing... just got some suitable wads for the straight wall types.
Turns out the majority of the Federals I grabbed are the newer plastic base wad style🇺🇸👍👊
Could you tumble??..like a pin tumbler ??
Probably? Would only be able to get a hand full of them in at a time.
