I am a 737 Captain for a legacy airline in the U.S...... recently I was flying an evening flight out of Maui to LAX. We were routed further south than normal for our arrival to LAX. At about 11pm at night and 1 hour from landing in LAX over the Pacific just southwest of the California Coastline, in the darkness, I noticed an orange glow at our 10 o'clock in the far distance.... I immediately thought "Rocket launch". We had just got in contact with Los Angeles Center and questioning pilots were asking on the frequency what the orange glow was... the controller said on the frequency SpaceX Falcon 9 launch from Vandenberg. My First Officer and I watched this Falcon 9 go from left to right OVER OUR HEADS with what I could only describe as "comet like qualities"...... at our 3 to 4 O'clock my FO saw the first stage light up and land on the barge in the distant darkness........it was by far the COOLEST thing I have ever seen from the cockpit in my 18 years as an airline pilot...... I just sent this video to my fellow pilot friends who i told the story to...... Now, they can see what we saw that night!!!!... absolutley amazing .....! Words can't describe how beautiful the sky was with that rocket painting a picture...... it was simply Awesome!
@@Leo-gt1bx its all controlled... many aircraft on the frequency over a large area of southern California and off the coastline.... when we are tuned to the same frequency we can all hear each other, but not necessarily see each other.....
@@Leo-gt1bx oh see what you mean now..... I did measure our distance from where we were to Vandenberg AFB where the rocket launch was..... we were approximately 200 miles south/southwest of Vandenberg over the Pacifc ocean....it was a pitch black moonless night and all we could see was the soft glow of light from the L.A. Basin ahead of us on the horizon since we were approaching the Californa coastline in the next 45 mins or so...... when the rocket started its launch we saw the orange glow on the horizon at our 10 oclock From the time it started ascending to the time it went over us and we saw the first stage land off our right wing probably 100 miles or so, it was about 10 minutes or so for the whole duration from launch to first stage landing...... that night we were routed much further south to avoid the active WARNING AREAS off the coast. Usually that means military activity of somekind to keep clear of ... im guessing that the active Warning areas were probably protecting the airspace south of Vandenberg just in case they aborted the launch over the ocean and the rocket possibly coming back down..... but by the time the rocket was over us 200 miles south of the launch location, it was clearly out of the earth's lower atmosphere making that beautiful blue comet tail...... I hope this helps.... im trying to describe it in words, but without a map it's hard to describe the locations and relative positions. We were alot farther away than im making it sound in my original post......... but you are right because there are Restricted Areas that were active around Vandenburg AFB during the launch to keep aircraft clear of the actual launch location as well as the Warning Areas off the coast over the ocean south of the launch...... like I said, a map would be so helpful in my explanation.... 😀

Agreed. I also really enjoy watching NASA's old videos of the launch, separation, and splashdown form the POV of the Solid Rocket Boosters. They had one with sound that's really amazing.

@John Coinyer Far better than what the govts are doing with such money, wasting $ trillions on some useless wars. Rather than wasting a $ trillion on invading Afghanistan, the US govt should've given that money to space x and NASA to set up mines on the moon to extract rare materials that can be used for medicine and clean fuels.
I took my dad to see a shuttle launch 17 years ago. We were all in place and then they scrubbed with -2h on the clock. It was two weeks before it went off, by which time we were back in the UK. We went all that way to see nothing. So to all the people who write to say 'We just happened to be in Florida when...' or 'I was just flying a plane over Florida when...'... Aaaarrrgghh!. *Sigh*. My dad's too unwell to travel now; I was still hopeful of seeing an Artemis launch but they seem to have scrubbed that permanently. I should get back there for some sort of launch though. Great vid, to see the entire show unfold from launch to separation to entry burn to landing burn. Nice job.
Great video! Dusk launches are amazing and I was lucky enough to be on the beach at Cape Canaveral (just to the left in this video) for this launch. Thanks for sharing!
Really nice video, the speed up let's you see how the drone ship bobs in the water and I never get tired of the jelly fish thing when it's dark but the vapor trail is illuminated. Be thanks to SpaceX for pre-visualizing the launch and setting the camera up to see all but the first 60 seconds or so of the launch.
Total time of this video was about 8.5 minutes, you see the launch, MECO, entry burn of first stage about 100 miles away, and finally landing burn and landing. Incredible!
Guys that is a boat. floating on the water. That is also a rocket that went supersonic, Obtained max dynamic pressure. Breached atmosphere twice then landed on said boat.
Very cool. I saw a launch just like this from the side just before Christmas 2018. I was about 10 miles out of Pahrump, NV not long after dark and pulled over when I saw the launch. When I got into Pahrump, I encountered multiple car accidents on the way to the hotel. All of California was freaking out. They get launches like this all the time out of Vandenburg but they somehow forgot what the one last month looked like and were screaming about UFOs, too funny.
Next step up is with a telescopic lens following the first stage from first sighting at launch to landing.…hopeful not obscured by clouds. Be cool to see separation, entry burn and the final moments before touchdown in real time.
Love this… what is that ball of fire looking thing at 0:15? There was also another white flash just before that after Falcon 9 was was above the lens view.
The engines of the first stage, they lit before reentering the atmosphere so the vehicle slows down. The white trail is the second stage going into orbit.
Just curious. What is that secondary flash within the launch path above the pad? It’s not the rocket since it is now overhead and out of the field of view of this camera?.
I’m so glad they finally fixed the camera going out issue just as it’s landing on the drone ship. How far is the drone ship sitting off the coast anyway? I always thought it was much further out than it looks in this video.
The problem was sending the footage, it was always recorded ok. Just the movement would throw the starlink aerial out of alignment. Still incredible. Just need to get the camera on a gimbal now to track the Falcon’s path. Plus, of course, we need scoring rings on the pad so they can get points for accuracy!
😮 The drone-ship seems to be moving toward the landing point. I always assumed it is stationary waiting for the rocket to reach it at the landing point. Which one is it? Is the movement an illusion due to the fast forward and some water current?
As J.R.T.I. is filming this, I need to ask. When the jellyfish effect is seen, what has occured at the time? MaxQ, StageSep, why is this effect darn like this?
This is a time of day where the ground level is in Darkness but the rocket is at an altitude where it is in direct sunlight, so either Just before sunrise, or just after sunset. What you are seeing is the sunlight illuminating the exhaust gases, and the "Explosion" effect is from stage separation and ignition of Stage 2.
